To hate my lounge carpet? Honest opinions on my lounge carpet that was laid yesterday

Evanted76 · 04/02/2022 10:45

We wanted something neutral but practical as we have two dogs. So we chose this one which was laid yesterday. Because its two tone it looks totally different in my lounge than it did in the showroom! We even took a small sample home!

My heart sank when the fitters left. It looks like it can't decide what colour it is..it's a kind of mink at night and during the day it has a silver/grey look to it. We had the same carpet laid in our bedroom which looks stunning as our bedroom is a champagne/ dark brown theme. But in the lounge against the pastel colours of the ottoman and mauve curtains I just don't know what to think. Honest opinions please and also some ideas on tweaks on what I can do?

I think the carpet pile will settle down, and it’s the ottoman you need to change, maybe to the same grey as the armchair?

Iwonderifiwonderwhy · 04/02/2022 15:58

The colour is fine and it looks good quality, the problem is the room as a whole is too neutral and does not look good. The good news is that ‘too neutral’ is such a fixable problem! Way easier than if you had too much colour ;)

If it was mine, I would experiment with adding colours (sofa throw and scatter cushions, maybe also curtains). Greens and pinks go very well with that shade of brown. I’d add a sage green sofa throw and baby pink cushions, then have a small amount of those colours elsewhere in the room too (eg a small picture, or mantelpiece decoration, or on the curtains…

I really wish when people offer up opinions like 'too neutral' they would qualify it with 'in my opinion'. Clearly OP likes it and doesn't think it's too anything.

The point of the thread is that OP doesn’t like it and posters are quite obviously offering up their own opinions. Which is, quite literally, what OP asked people to do.
HyacynthBucket · 04/02/2022 16:11

Maybe a rug in the centre part of the room under the ottoman. And maybe brighter colours in there so that it is a foil for them - touches of red say or deep blue. Hope you grow to like it better, OP. Sometimes things grow on you as you get used to them.

EllaPaella · 04/02/2022 16:31

I'll be honest and say I don't think it works with the wall colour or the fire surround which looks like a cream/ivory colour. I don't think it really works with the sofa colour either (sorry).
It's totally non offensive but it does all look a bit beige and not quite right.
Presumably now it's down it has to stay, if it were me I would probably take the opportunity to redecorate the walls now and possibly paint the surround of the fire if you can. change the curtains and get some new throws and cushion for the sofas.

The small chair looks good with it, I don't think the checkered stool works with it all.
I hope you don't take offence as I don't mean to be rude. The same thing happened to me when I re-carpeted my front room last year, it just didn't work with the walls and fittings. I did something very drastic and painted my fireplace wall in hague blue and was able to get some new furniture and it totally transformed the whole room! You could have a look on insta or Pinterest for some ideas as to what colours would work for the walls and curtains.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/02/2022 16:34

I like it, maybe add some more cushions the same colour to bring it together. Lovely lounge by the way.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 04/02/2022 16:45

I think its beautiful. It goes well with your furniture in my opinion, and the pile going in different directions makes it look extra sumptuous (I vacuum my carpet in different directions to try to achieve the same effect! Smile).

How2Help · 04/02/2022 16:55

Haven’t RTFT. I didn’t like it when I quickly looked, but when I zoomed in, I thought it was nice. I hope you grow to love it.

And unrelated to what you asked: your house is gorgeous. I want your lantern and roses that are by the fireplace, and whilst I’m there I’ll clone your dogs too Grin.

Guineapigssweak · 04/02/2022 17:23

Lovely room. If I had to change anything it would be.the table. Looks old fashioned to me and prefer wood. The other bits and size of your room is lovely (especially your gorgeous dogs )

Needacuppanow · 04/02/2022 17:27

When I zoom in on the grey chair, it looks fab with the carpet. The sofa and ottoman doesn't go as well.

DarleneSnell · 04/02/2022 17:33

I have come back to this thread and re-looked at the pics. Still love the carpet and cannot see what the critics are! OP you're not allowed to change it!!

ittakes2 · 04/02/2022 17:44

I like neutral but it’s all too browny beige. I also thought that was vacuum movements. I also second a rug. Something with colour whether it’s bright or muted or colour - just colour.

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 04/02/2022 17:55

@WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia

First world problems.

The carpet looks fine btw.

What exactly were you expecting on a thread with a title asking for opinions about a new carpet? “Please tell me what you think of my carpet and also how should we solve period poverty in the developing world?”
Elasmotherium · 04/02/2022 18:00

If I am seeing it correctly, it's a sort of mottled two tone effect? I think either shade would have been OK as a plain neutral carpet but the mixed up effect just looks patchy and a bit grubby.

Not keen at all, sorry OP.

Evanted76 · 04/02/2022 18:37
@Evanted76 I could do with the measurement of the ottoman, if you don't know/can't measure the room size. I can work out a rough size of the room with that. Again, you don't have to.
@comeonspringtime

It's a Redrow Canterbury. Looking at the floor plan it's 15ft x 14.5ft.

That’s just that kind of carpet, it’s a deep pile- soft touch. Go on instagram-it’s meant to look like that.
My mum hates that kind of carpet, “footprints in the snow” as she calls it.
I on the other hand - love it! So voted YABU! Do not buy a rug!

DinosaurDuvet · 04/02/2022 18:43

I like it!

Cryalot2 · 04/02/2022 18:54

We had a similar looking carpet in two of the bedrooms for a lifetime.

It is only just down and will look different.
Unless you are extremely weathy it would be wasteful and wrong to change.

Everything new does tend to look different and take a bit of getting used to.

If it serves its purpose then let it be.
As someone says get a rug if you are not totally happy, but secure it well as you don't want accidents.
You could have a different rug for summer and winter.

A house is a lived in home, not a show house. Just enjoy it.

Quamora · 04/02/2022 19:15

Ours looked like that when first laid but after a year or so it was one colour (and a lot less fluffy)

ComeOnSpringtime · 04/02/2022 19:26

Thank you @Evanted76 Star

Evanted76 · 04/02/2022 19:31

@thisplaceisweird

Out of interest what don't you like?

Not the person you are asking but my opinion is:

the furniture is a bit 'shabby chic' - not to my taste as it just looks a bit cheap and mis-matched. Everything is a different colour and tone, all of the woods are completely different, even the styles are all a bit different. Some items very structured, others a bit saggy. It would lend itself better to a farm house style room, with tiles. Instead the carpet is so shiny and 'polished', and your house looks like a new build, it just doesn't work. Too much going on, and yet almost 'nothing' is going on. It's all just a bit meh

Crikey I asked the other person what she didn't like about the colours as she stated she didn't like the colours in the room.

I was a bit taken aback to get a roasting about how cheap and mismatched and "meh" all my furnishings and furniture is.

@Evanted76 some very rude responses on here. Some people seem to think they're expert interior designers and have impeccable taste. I just checked your original posts and you did ask for tweaks, but that seems to have given some carte Blanche to rip it all to shreds.

IMO it's all lovely... nothing too matchy and nothing too trendy.

StoneofDestiny · 04/02/2022 19:43

I think the tartan coffee table does what a rug would do, so no rug needed.
I think as you've chosen a shaggy carpet you will have to put up with the pile lying in different directions. More of a bedroom carpet. It will flatten and you won't notice eventually.
