How long does javelin arse last?

TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky · 29/01/2022 22:20

It happened to me last week for the first time in ages. It lasted about 5-6 seconds.

I was just wondering whether, when we describe javelin arse, are we all experiencing the same thing?

Does it only last a few seconds for others as well?

I get it for about 15 minutes Confusedit's awful but I do have a way of getting rid of it.

I roll back and forward so the pressure goes from my lower back then under my buttocks repeat until it goes, the relief is immense. Takes a few minutes to stop though. Worst pain I have ever experienced and I get it every couple of months.

Omg thank you. I wondered what this was. Sometimes it radiates to my bum cheek. MN is fabulous

IndominusRex · 01/02/2022 09:29

I can get this for days at a time thanks to severe Endo 😥

NellePorter · 01/02/2022 09:50

I'm not sure it's menopause related, I've had it for as long as I can remember (and definitely before I ever went to Center Parcs Grin)

miltonj · 01/02/2022 10:15

I think it's hormone related. Sometimes have it on period and when pregnant too.

With my first pregnancy I got it on the tram so severely that I couldn't breath. I got home and within twI hours I was miscarrying. So it's definitely related to women's hormones. Especially as some of you are reporting having it on menopause.

It may be related to hormones in the women who suffer from it- I used to notice it more around ovulation but now I'm post menopause and still get it, but as more men than women suffer from it, there must be other reasons. All the medical links/papers about it always say "no known cause".

Fellow sufferer here. What helps me, how relaxed are the soles of your feet? I find crampy feet or calves make it worse.
Also deep squats, not up and down, just bum down, feet flat if you can and try to let the muscles clenching in your lower back release.

A Kegels 8 machine on the relax setting. I have been to the gynea who looked at me as if I had made it up. Rolling on the floor for hours, trying to drive safely when this happened on the motorway. Its so bloody debilitating

miltonj · 01/02/2022 15:29

@PAFMO I guess for men and non hormone related instances it could be nerves getting trapped or trapped wind or a combination of both at the same time?

Same. Except I've never been to Centre Parcs.

Thank you JA sufferers for leaving this thread for me to find in the night.
After my second, totally debilitating episode of JA where I ended up on the floor in such acute pain I almost passed out... I then thought Who will know about this?
I knew the wise MNetters would!.

Honestly it was so painful and lasted about 5 minutes. I'm going to try sone of the tips on here if it happens again.

If anyone reads this, please can you tell me if it happens often? I've had it two nights in a row, tonight was the worst. Praying it's not going to happen tomorrow night or more...

sashh · 22/07/2024 07:34

LOL.

I only ever had it on my period so I have no idea if you are not 'on'.

bigyellowTpot · 22/07/2024 07:44

fellow* *occasional suffer here too and was only talking about this yesterday with a relative who is also a sufferer. for us it just happens occasionally but comes on without warning and often in the middle of the night. will wake up in excruciating pain with it. Also occasionally happens for me after emptying my bowels. The strong contraction like pains remind me very much of labour pain I experienced with dc1.Also with a very strong feeling that I am pooing myself, even though I'm actually not. I passed out with the pain the very first time I experienced it. I have learnt just to breath through the pains when it happens, very similar to breathing through labour pains. for me it usually lasts around 15-20 minutes. it is an horrible pain.

@ProudThrilledHappy

Oh up to 10-15 seconds for me. I’m sure I’ve watched a video from a doctor explaining this before, something to do with hormones in the menstrual cycle affecting the bowels but I cannot for the life of me find it now.
Yes - the hormones ‘leak’ into the surrounding areas from around your uterus and cause contractions in the intestine/bowel. The GP explained it to me once. The leaky hormones are also why you get the period shits - the contractions make the waste go through your system more quickly.

I have an update and it turns out my GP was talking rubbish.

The reason for my javelin arse was stage four, deep infiltrating rectovaginal endometriosis. Like a previous poster, my ‘pouch of Douglas’ was obliterated with adhesions, endometriosis was scattered throughout my pelvis, my ovaries were tethered to my pelvic wall, and the back of my uterus was tethered to my sigmoid colon.

My periods were regular, not heavy or especially painful. My only symptoms were the javelin arse, lower back ache, and I would spot for a few days before coming on.

The consultant explained the javelin pain was the sensation of my poo travelling over the area of endometriosis.

I had excision surgery carried out and I’m very pleased to say haven’t had the javelin arse - or the terrible daily lower backache - since!

Thank you @bigyellowTpot
It helps to know I'm not alone and your experience sounds very similar to mine. It's a ridiculously scary experience and a huge PITA in more ways than one.
My husband found me on the floor in agony!
Fingers crossed it doesn't happen tonight. 😰

almondflake · 24/07/2024 08:49

@ouchybummad , hi , i don't know if you've tried this but sitting up in bed used to help me , lying down always made my pain worse .
I tended to get the pain every couple of months but could tell when it was coming by a tightening like a pulse around my labia , if I felt that during the day it usually meant I was going to have an attack at night so I sometimes took painkillers before bed although that was just putting it off as I'd get JB the next night .

HoobleDooble · 26/08/2024 18:32

Ooh I haven't had javelin arse for ages ... not that I miss it. I do get tweaks everywhere else though, especially the one where you suddenly feel like your knee is going to bend the wrong way.
