How long does javelin arse last?

TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky · 29/01/2022 22:20

It happened to me last week for the first time in ages. It lasted about 5-6 seconds.

I was just wondering whether, when we describe javelin arse, are we all experiencing the same thing?

Does it only last a few seconds for others as well?

Only a few seconds, maybe 10 - 20 seconds at most, I don't get it too often. I get fanny daggers all the time, tried explaining it to the nurse after I had smear once and she just looked at me confused and had no idea what I was talking about!

marpelier · 30/01/2022 01:54
@marpelier - it's hard to explain- and there is the sudden short version which lasts seconds- never had that. For me, it's a deep, aching constant aching pain that is indescribable really and all consuming. You can't really think, move, or do anything. I sit on the toilet and push- doesn't help. Rock on the bed, tried rolling a certain way on the floor- nothing gives you release- you just know it will end eventually but not when, and that nothing will make a difference. For me, it's not sharp, it's a pain inside that you can't get away from- I've almost had vagul responses (fainting) from it, it's a visceral pain.
Well that sounds crap! Literally even. Sorry for all the sufferers of JA out there. You really do learn something new everyday!

If it had a theme tune it would be Top Gun

Urgh, javelin arse seems to be getting worse as I get older. Lasts a good 5 mins these days

Had it last week for the first time in ages

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/01/2022 02:23

I've only had it rarely, thank goodness, and it usually only lasts a few seconds.

Bit scared reading some of these posts about it lasting around 15-20 minutes!! Shock

cheshirebloke · 30/01/2022 02:41

I can confirm that men get it too. Luckily for us not at the same time as a period though! I get it perhaps a couple of times a year or so. Guessing it lasts about 20-30 seconds, not sure exactly, as I'd never have the inclination to try and time it.

Interesting that it's supposedly more common in men, I've never heard anyone mention it before. But then it's probably one of those things that men just never discuss. I'd googled it, checked it wasn't a sign of imminent death and then left it at that.

@samwitwicky

"For severe proctalgia fugax, electrical stimulation of the anorectal muscles may provide relief. This treatment option involves inserting a small, finger-sized probe into the rectum and using a low voltage current to relax spastic muscles through vibration."

So a vibrator then?

I clearly lead a sheltered and tranquil life.

Javelin Arse - some sort of Olympic Sport?

Fanny Daggers - now I know this one, she used to run a chip shop in Armley, Leeds.

MooSakah · 30/01/2022 07:18

I'm glad men get it too. I like to think there's a similar thread on dadsnet.

sashh · 30/01/2022 07:22

@Hairyfriend

Never heard this term in my life?

Do you mean a shooting pain inside the anus, bum cheeks, coccyx or something else??? Confused

When you have your period a sudden pain that feels like a javelin is being shoved up your back passage.
MinnieMountain · 30/01/2022 07:36

I get left tit ache @Popsicle33. It’s hormonal but was bloody scary at first since that’s the tit that had cancer.

clouds56 · 30/01/2022 07:37

So weird just scrolling through MN trying to distract myself from the awful aftermath feeling/discomfort of javelin arse and come across this post randomly on my feed!! Definitely made me feel less alone this morning! It's awful, as intense as pushing a baby out but luckily the pain doesn't last as long. I always get the pains at the start of my period, especially when I need a number 2!

ChippyDucks150 · 30/01/2022 07:41

I never get it during the day, but it wakes me up when I'm asleep in the middle of the night, has done for years.
Can only imagine how it would be in the middle of a work day, I wouldnt be able to walk!!

I've only had it once in the day, just before lockdown. In 5c. Unable clearly to tell them what was occurring I just said "oh guys, I suddenly feel really sick and dizzy (if only) can you just get on with your work for a bit" Then I sat gripping the desk and moaning quietly for quarter of an hour.

I'm 56 and female. Have always had it- like others I asked my GP years ago and she said ovulation related (pouch of Douglas, endo connections) but I still get it, thankfully generally not in front of a class.

Imagine yourself sat on the edge of the bath, with your bum lower (into the tub) That position, whilst undoubtedly causing hilarity for non sufferers and should anyone walk in, seems to shorten the length of the attack. If you can, boiling hot shower down your back, and soluble painkillers/buscopan also shorten it.

Thinking about it, I do sometimes get the very short version, but when I get that it's kind of like the little twinge you get before the OMFG version hits.

Tanfastic · 30/01/2022 08:32

I experienced this for the first time about six months ago. I'm 48 Confused. I woke with it and wondered what the hell was going on it was absolute agony. Mine lasted about 30 minutes and I lie there sweating and writhing around clenching g my teeth, thought I was going to pass out. The sheer relief when it passed 😱. Fucking awful.

The only way I'd describe it is that pain you get when you wake with cramp in your calf but it's up your arse and lasts longer.

I was so worried that I googled it the next day and found it's really common. Also found a thread on here about it and so relieved I wasn't actually dying of an anal tumour or something equally as horrible. Not that I'm being dramatic 😂😂

Really hope it was a one off 🙊

GreenWhiteViolet · 30/01/2022 08:40

I had never had this and thought it was some strange MN thing. Until just after Christmas when I woke in the night in sudden pain - Javelin Arse! It lasted about five seconds, but then repeated 2-3 times a day for about 2 weeks. That was not fun. I have no idea what caused it, or why it stopped. I hope it never returns!

ChristmasCatNo2 · 30/01/2022 08:43

I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with the pain. I always crawl to the bathroom for painkillers but have never managed to stand up to reach for the cupboard. So I lie there sweating and nauseous until it passes. Probably around 10-15 minutes. I've had this happen maybe 10 times in my whole life.

I also get the 5-6 second ones every month with my period. I never knew what was wrong with me until reading threads on MN. So glad the stigma around everything feminine is being lifted and we can share stuff that many people go through.

TroysMammy · 30/01/2022 08:45

I've never timed it because It's too painful to think about anything other than my arse.

TiffanyAchingsHatFullofSky · 30/01/2022 09:04

Centre Parks has a lot to answer for.

ipswichwitch · 30/01/2022 09:19

I never had it until I started peri menopause. Oh my days, the pain! And the nausea and sweating. First time it happened I came staggering out the bathroom and DH took one look at me and thought I was having a heart attack! The only person I’ve mentioned it to IRL that didn’t look at me like i have 3 heads was my lovely gastro consultant who nodded sagely, and said “ah yes that’ll be the proctalgia fugax. Bloody terrible!” Clearly a fellow sufferer.

Grin True! I didn't realise it happened to other people until I read it here, some years ago. And javelin arse is the most perfect description.
Starbonnet123 · 30/01/2022 09:26

I suffer from this too mainly at night , it can last anything from 20 mins to an hour . I've had it since my mid 30s and was absolutely terrified it was something serious. I've eventually found out that it's just one of those things .
The way I relieve it is to sit up in bed and put pressure on the perineum (?) that really seems to ease it that and deep breathing.

ScreamingMeMe · 30/01/2022 09:40

I luckily(!) only seem to get it when lying in bed in the morning. I couldn't say how long it lasts - feels like forever, is probably a few minutes.

Benjispruce5 · 30/01/2022 09:42

@ipswichwitch that’s a bad case, like my DH had. The javelin arse is more a quick succession of stabs, no sweats or clamminess etc. DH said he went to the loo thinking the pain meant he had to ho but the ‘trying’ made him pass out. We looked it up and it was something to do with pressure on a nerve.Vaso-vagel reaction?

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 30/01/2022 09:52

I think it’s the most excruciating pain ever, easily beats labour pains.
It literally takes your breath away.
