To ask how long you were together before you got married?

How long were you in a relationship before you got engaged/married? I was with DP for almost three years when we got engaged, when we get married, we’ll have been together almost four. Speaking to acquaintances (not close friends) it seems like that’s unusual and we’ve been hasty. A work colleague was particularly taken aback and informed me that ‘short engagements are a recipe for disaster’. I thought this was a bit bizarre!

I’m unworried about my relationship, but I’m intrigued…what’s everyone else’s norm?

We’re early 30’s professionals in London, postgrad education, good jobs, good pay, no prior marriages or kids. I think that for our demographic 3-5 years is pretty standard, but happy to be told I’m wrong.

And married 9 months after getting engaged!

Engaged after about 10 months. Married 9 months later.
30 years married this year, so it seems to have worked for us!

Engaged after 10 months and married exactly a year later, married 5 years this year

Engaged after just under 2 years together, married at 2.5 years, have been together nearly 16 years in total now

Started going out 3 months after we met, engaged 8 months later, married 14 months after that. All in all, we'd known each other for just over 2 years before we were married. That was over 14 years ago & we're still married. I wouldn't advise anyone else to do the same at 19 but it seems to have worked out for me!

Together just under 3 years when we got engaged, got married 14 months after that (aged 35 and 36) Still together 11 years later.

I knew he was the one I wanted to marry very soon into the relationship, so it didn't feel rushed at all.

We didn’t get engaged but met and married in 6 months . That was 32 years ago and we are still happy and still get on most of the time

@Mylittlepotofjoy I apologise if I’m being dim, but how did you manage to get married without getting engaged? Someone must have popped the question at some point, surely?

3 years 9 months. We got engaged after 2 years together.
