To ask how long you were together before you got married?

How long were you in a relationship before you got engaged/married? I was with DP for almost three years when we got engaged, when we get married, we’ll have been together almost four. Speaking to acquaintances (not close friends) it seems like that’s unusual and we’ve been hasty. A work colleague was particularly taken aback and informed me that ‘short engagements are a recipe for disaster’. I thought this was a bit bizarre!

I’m unworried about my relationship, but I’m intrigued…what’s everyone else’s norm?

We’re early 30’s professionals in London, postgrad education, good jobs, good pay, no prior marriages or kids. I think that for our demographic 3-5 years is pretty standard, but happy to be told I’m wrong.

We got engaged 10 days after we met, married 4 month later. We have been married 28 happy years.

Moved in together after 4 months, got engaged two months after that. Got married a year after moving in together (so 16 months after we started going out).

Engaged after a year. Then because our wedding kept getting cancelled because of covid we got married 3 years after that. So we had been together 4 years.

9 years together, 4 years engaged and getting married this year but only something very small. Not interested in weddings but I do think we should financially and legally tie ourselves together as we trust each over implicitly. I am the one with more to lose to be fair as I own my own house but dp has added on over £200,000 in value with building work so only fair they are protected too.

15 months, still together 37 years later

Moved in together pretty much straight away (within a few weeks) engaged after 8 months married another 8 months after that. We were mid to late 20's no kids, no previous marriages and are still married 21 years later. That said, there were things about him that I didn't see till a few years later and in all honesty that may have changed things if we hadn't already been married .

We were together for two years before getting engaged, and married the following year.

It was quicker than many but we were in our late 30s, wanted to start a family but wanted to be married first, so no time to lose. If we’d been younger we would’ve left it longer.

In my experience, there’s no correlation between the length of the engagement and the length of the marriage.

Can’t remember exactly when we got engaged, we were at home one day and DH asked me but it was about 8 weeks before our wedding, we’d been together 14 months when we got married. Celebrating our 13th anniversary this year.

It’s completely up to you two when you feel getting married is right. Every relationship is individual, what works for someone else doesn’t work for you.
We had so many comments on our relationship, we were too young, it’s too soon, you’re making a mistake, it won’t last. Do what makes you happy, they are not in your relationship.

Still going strong 15 years later.

5 years. Lived together for 3 of them.

2 years engaged, married at 3 years. Now been married for 44 years.

Together 7 years, engaged 1, married 1, separated 2 and divorce processing! 🙈

It really doesn't matter how many years you wrack up. Good relationships can come to an end just as good relationships can last forever ♥️

Ignore the jelous or bitter haters and enjoy your lovely relationship! What do they know!!!

Met at 23, got our first flat together a year later, then bought a house another 2 years after that. Got engaged 3 months after the house, then married a year later. Been married 20 years this year.

Met online in the December.
Met in person end of January.
Got engaged on our 4th date in the April - we lived far apart so didn't see each other that often.
Got married in the October - I didn't see the point of a long engagement, we wanted to marry so we did.

It will be 16 years this year!

Together 5 years before getting engaged and 8 years before getting married. But we were only together for 3 weeks before getting pregnant - which is hasty 🤣

Nothing wrong with low key if that’s what you both want. I’ve no regrets 20 years later. Some people do seem to view engaged as a status in its own right whereas we wanted to be married for legal reasons before having a baby. It perhaps is a lawyer thing 😊 Best wishes. I wouldn’t give ‘hasty’ another thought.
