Just curious 🤨

OP posts:
Lockheart · 21/01/2022 08:29

Does it?

BitcherOfBlakiven · 21/01/2022 08:30

I don’t like them. They’re often shoe horned in at the expense of storage space.

BurscoughBooths · 21/01/2022 08:30

I like mine

Chasingsquirrels · 21/01/2022 08:31

MN isn't a single consciousness.

I like mine.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 21/01/2022 08:32

I don't know anyone who has one that hates them. Only people who haven't got them dislike them 😀 - jealousy perhaps?

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/01/2022 08:32

I love mine. Wouldn’t move to a house without one and really miss having one if we go away without it.
I do have a chronic illness that means a I spent a lot of time in the bathroom though and having my own private space helps with that.
DH also going for a wee about 3/4 times a night so far easier then going to the family bathroom.

FirewomanSam · 21/01/2022 08:36

I love my en suite and find it hilarious that they’re regularly declared ‘vile’ on here. People seem to have an issue with the idea of ‘shitting in the bedroom’ which is just classic Mumsnet faux-horror over hygiene nonsense (see also: loo brushes)

I especially love that when we have visitors to stay we can keep our en-suite all to ourselves and it feels really private. I can’t imagine not having one!

Aquamarine1029 · 21/01/2022 08:36

I love mine.

middleager · 21/01/2022 08:39

Mine is lovely. It has a design, a walkway, that enables me to use part of it as a dressing room area before reaching the shower and toilet.
I wouldn't be without it.
In my last house all 4 of us shared one tiny bathroom.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 21/01/2022 08:41

I see many en suites in my job and very few of them seem to be well designed. Far too many are crammed into a tiny space and are relatively light and airless. Others take up a lot of floor space in a bedroom.

The good ones are great, and if I had the space I would probably have one. But they seem to be quite rare, even in the very posh houses I see.

Momicrone · 21/01/2022 08:41

It's the noises I am not fond of!

Wolfiefan · 21/01/2022 08:41

We have one. So does DS. Gives DD sole use of “family” bathroom. Love them!!
Extra cleaning is a pain but it’s so convenient to not have to consider whether someone else may want a shower whilst you’re in there. They are both decent sizes though. Walk in shower for us and extra large cubicle for DS. Hate the poky little showers you can hardly turn round in!!

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 21/01/2022 08:44

It’s because some people can’t cope with the noises and smells of a perfectly normal life, because they are pathetic.

A580Hojas · 21/01/2022 08:44

If you know "MN hates en-suites" whatever that actually means, then you'll have read the threads explaining why people do. We don't need it all re-hashing again surely?

We've got a toilet brushes thread again today and I've seen "how often should I shower" in the last few days, and "what phrases/sayings do you hate?"

It's all so boringly samey!

Snowiscold · 21/01/2022 08:45

As many people like them as dislike them. We don’t have one, but we do have two bathrooms off the landing. I don’t like the idea that a particular bathroom is just designated for one person whose bedroom it is. It’s a waste and means there’s only one bathroom for the rest of the household. When we had our second bathroom installed, my parents assumed it would be an en-suite for the spare room. In their mind, an en-suite would be for guests. I think it indicates how times have changed that now lots expect or want an en-suite for the main bedroom. We are glad we don’t have one.

Allsorts1 · 21/01/2022 08:47

We have a fantastic ensuite - I’ve never heard of ensuite dislike until mumsnet! I wonder if those people all also hate hotel rooms as they all have ensuites 😂

RidingMyBike · 21/01/2022 08:49

I hate ours! We're temporarily renting whilst we find a house to buy and I'm viewing it as an experiment in what we'd like to have! So many houses seem to have a titchy en suite shoehorned into a too small bedroom when storage space would be better.

Reasons I hate ours are mainly it's set up:
It's the only bathroom on top floor of a townhouse so if DD needs loo in the night she trots in (complete with commentary). I'm not happy about her navigating the stairs then so it has to be the en suite = disturbed night.
Its light switch is outside the room so you have to turn light on before going in - this puts bright light over the bed = disturbed night for other person. We've turned off the extractor fan as it was SO LOUD!
It's yet another bathroom to clean.

I'd possibly feel differently if it was a large bedroom with en suite off the foot of the bed instead of right next to it. If light was switched on inside en suite and there was a soft/low light option.

mogsrus · 21/01/2022 08:49

We have a bathroom, & en suite., makes life so much easier, but daughter is really jealous of the walk in wardrobe

spongbob · 21/01/2022 08:49

-often no Windows, lacks ventilation. A fan isn't really as good as opening a window and getting fresh air
-adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit

  • waste of space, would rather have added bedroom area
  • extra cleaning
-find it tacky, reminds me of a hotel

After living with an en-suite I will actively turn down any house/flat that has one even if great in other respects.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2022 08:49

I think MN just hates everything to do with normal bodily functions.

See also tradespeople who use your facilities while working at your house. MN seems to think they must have missed the memo where 'everyone' times their bowel movements so they only ever go in the morning, at home, before setting out for the day.

Coffeeholix · 21/01/2022 08:49

I’ve only seen MNers loving en-suites. I however don’t understand them, why not just have 2 bathrooms coming off the main hall (if it allows) or one downstairs and one upstairs?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2022 08:50

adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit

What, like a bathroom? Confused

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/01/2022 08:51

Our en-suite is amazing! So big and well-designed - we designed it Wink

It’s not that I want an en-suite but I want more than one bathroom.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 21/01/2022 08:52

@Allsorts1

Yep. Hotel en suites are a prime example of the worst design. Airless, lightless and usually damp feeling boxes of unpleasantness.
TheChemicalMother · 21/01/2022 08:52

No hate here….
