Just curious 🤨

@ThisIsStartingToBoreMe

I don't know anyone who has one that hates them. Only people who haven't got them dislike them 😀 - jealousy perhaps?
I hate them. We could have easily fit one in but I chose not to. I'd much rather have a bigger room, storage space or a dressing area.

When we were looking at houses all the new builds had them but little or no storage.

I've never understood peoples obsession with them.

spongbob · 21/01/2022 08:53

@BarbaraofSeville

adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit

What, like a bathroom? Confused

If you shut your bedroom door, there is a door in your room with a toilet in it. It's yuck. Also the steam from the shower goes all into your room.

Sorry I upset you, I know people are very passionate about their en suites. Must be more careful with my wording

Chemenger · 21/01/2022 08:55

If it is a choice between storage and an en-suite I’d rather have storage. If space isn’t an issue I’d like an en-suite.

Exhausteddog · 21/01/2022 08:55

I love my en suite and find it hilarious that they’re regularly declared ‘vile’ on here. People seem to have an issue with the idea of ‘shitting in the bedroom’ which is just classic Mumsnet faux-horror over hygiene nonsense (see also: loo brushes)

I think open plan ensuites where you literally are going to the loo in your bedroom are horrendous. If the bathroom is separated by a wall and has a solid, fully closing door, I'm not sure what makes them so much more disgusting than a normal bathroom.Confused

Not many MN can be involved in architecture or house design on a big scale as most modern homes over a certain size all seem to have them. However some acquaintances recently had a 400k extension and refurb on their house and me and DH were really surprised it didn't include an ensuite to the master bedroom. The bathrooms were amazing though.

Chickychoccyegg · 21/01/2022 08:56

I love my ensuite, it has a bath and a window (as well as the other usual stuff obviously 😁) it's really big and bright, and we still have lots of storage in my bedroom, which is unusually big compared to the rest of the house , sadly I only rent this house, it's beautiful though!!

ANameChangeAgain · 21/01/2022 08:57

No one has said "grim" yet. A MN first, surely!
I want one but live in a largish but old house so don't have one. Having an additional downstairs wc put in a few years ago was a life changer.
We looking at building our own home with 3 large double bedrooms. We wouldn't have an ensuite as such, rather 2 family bathrooms.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/01/2022 08:58

I like mine but it is large, well designed and airy. It’s existence doesn’t compromise on storage space and husband and I have the common courtesy to shit in one of the other toilets if we happen to need to go when it’s near bedtime.

BigYellowHat · 21/01/2022 08:58

I like mine although DH isn’t allowed to dump in it as he stinks out the bedroom. I’m sure he’s had a couple of sneaky ones though 🤔

The ones with windows aren't so bad, but the ones that have no windows ( so dark) is just a toilet closet the opens into your room.

Hadjab · 21/01/2022 08:59

I don’t know if MN hates en-suites, but they certainly hate the idea of people taking a shit in them, in other words, using them for their actual purpose…

AnotherCupOfTeaDear · 21/01/2022 08:59

I love mine. Its a game changer living in a busy household

Sausagesausagesausage · 21/01/2022 09:01

I love ours, it's huge!

I find the downstairs toilet a bit odd - it's going for a wee under the stairs in our house.

stuntbubbles · 21/01/2022 09:02

You’ve got your cause/effect the wrong way around. We hate them and therefore don’t have them.

I factor in the price of removal and making good the space when house hunting. I don’t want to hear DP weeing/pooing in the night, or the extractor clicking on, or see the light. I don’t want poo wafts in my bedroom. I don’t want a funny-shaped bedroom with a chunk taken out for a poo closet. And if the room is properly next door, I’d rather it was converted to a more usable room – family shower room off the hallway, or home office.

CounsellorTroi · 21/01/2022 09:02

We live in a 1930s semi which does not lend itself to en-suites. Would ruin the proportions of the room. That said an extra shower room is a good idea in a family home, but the current trend of even two bedroom flats having an ensuite is ridiculous. We don’t like having people to stay as we can’t offer them exclusive use of a bathroom.

Nydj · 21/01/2022 09:03

I wouldn’t like en suites in my home because they would be something else to clean. Happy to use them for all their intended purposes when we go on holiday and are in rooms with en suites and it’s someone else’s responsibility to clean them.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 21/01/2022 09:06

What a daft thing to write! How can a message board with hundreds of thousands of unconnected random posters hate anything? I've seen posts fervently pro ensuite and fervently anti though, so it is true that (like shoes on or shoes off in the house) it is a theme that can prompt strong feelings which seem disproportionate. I think in both cases it's something that people feel on some level says something about them personally. If a subgroup of people you viewas peers seem to jusge ensuites or taking shoes off in the house negatively, people who have chosen those things for their houses feel judged personally and want to defend and justify their choice to someone (and of course the same the other way around).

I don't like ensuites because most of the ones I've been in are cramped and windowless, which I find unpleasant. They usually only have a shower. A large ensuite with a bath and seperate shower and agood sized window would be a nice thing but rare IME.

I very much dislike having other people in my bedroom and would dislike any set up involving being expected to let anyone else walk through my bedroom to use an ensuite bathroom - ensuites bring the problem that different households have different etiquette and some people expect to use the nearest bathroom including ones reached by walking through a bedroom, while others see ensuites as off limits except to the occupants of the attached bedroom.

Some new builds only have ensuites and no guest or family bathroom meaning walking through bedrooms is unavoidable.

In any event I would hate to have to clean four ensuites rather than one big family bathroom and one downstairs toilet.

heeblejeeble · 21/01/2022 09:06

I love mine. In a house full of boys/men it’s my own personal toilet that they aren’t allowed to stink out and pee all over. I painted it pink and have my glass collection in there it’s the best room in the house!

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 21/01/2022 09:07

I've got 2.
Admittedly, one is about as roomy as a coffin, but the other is bigger than our bathroom.

They do have doors, so you're not shitting in your bedroom...if you are then you're doing it all wrong.

SpinsForGin · 21/01/2022 09:09

I once viewed a house that had 4 bathrooms and every single one had to be accessed through a bedroom. Ridiculous.

BruceAndNosh · 21/01/2022 09:10

@RidingMyBike we also have a lightswitch outside, so we have these battery stick on sensor lights in bathroom.

Not harsh bright light, soft white. Dim enough that it doesn't sear your eyeballs, bright enough to find loo, paper and basin. Batteries last yonks. I use rechargeable ones

ufucoffee · 21/01/2022 09:10

We have one but neither of us would use the loo if the other person was in the room. It's useful to have two showers. Can't see a problem with them tbh.

mrsm43s · 21/01/2022 09:11

While I wouldn't go so far as to say that I "hate" ensuites, I've not got any desire for one because:

  • it's instinctively uncomfortable to shit where you sleep. In nature animals generally find a toileting place away from the sleeping area.
  • my DH does really stinky poos and would stink out our bedroom
- children would be wandering in and out of our room to use it - I'd prefer the space in our bedroom. - bigger or more family bathrooms would suit our family more -they're generally found in new builds (which I don't favour) and retrofitted ones (and sometimes the purpose built ones) are often tiny, squashed in, poorly designed and not fit for purpose.

But as I said, I don't "hate" them. They don't really occupy any headspace for me. I don't want one, and they'd not be a feature I'd look for in a new house purchase (in fact would mildly put me off), but I accept that some other people like them and to those people they obviously serve a purpose.

3luckystars · 21/01/2022 09:12

I think they are fabulous. Your own bathroom in your own room. It’s wonderful!

My friends parents have an actual toilet in their bedroom, no walls around it, just there. I think they were planning to put walls around it and then just didn’t. Now that is a different story!!

WhyYesYABU · 21/01/2022 09:15

We have one now where you walk through a dressing room to get to it and I love it. There is a roof window and plenty of space.

In our last place we had a small one cut out of an already modest bedroom right across the hall from the family bathroom and I agree that is just a poo closet shoe horned in at the expense of storage space.

For me it depends whether its designed properly or not. Our current house is quite large so its a shlep to the next nearest loo.

RidingMyBike · 21/01/2022 09:16

Oooh thanks @BruceAndNosh I'll have a look. We also have a very limiting tenancy agreement which means we're not allowed to stick anything up anywhere even with blu-tack, but possibly we could find a way to avoid leaving marks.
