Just curious 🤨

In the US almost ALL main bedrooms have en suites and it would be off putting not to have one. And would lower price of the house. Usually, includes a big master closet for each partner, double sinks, large bath and shower and toilet closet.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/01/2022 00:50

I love on Selling Sunset that the houses are all something like '3 beds + 7 bathrooms.'

SummerWhisper · 22/01/2022 01:05

I love mine, but it's a separate room off our bedroom, so it isn't space taken from the bedroom. I think this type of en-suite is ideal but harder to find unless your house is massive or - like mine - old, with lots of higgledy-piggledy rooms that make great conversions.

You don’t have a very wide experience of American housing. Lots more American houses have big master bedrooms with ensuite s and closets. But a huge number of Americans live in small apartments, shared housing, projects, older houses, etc. that do not have amazing ,amazing quality ensuites. It isn’t at all unusual, even in some of the most expensive markets like Manhattan or the San Francisco Bay Area, for million dollar+ houses not to have an ensuite.
halloweenie13 · 22/01/2022 02:57

At least two bathrooms or one bathroom one en suite is a must!

ByTheSea · 22/01/2022 03:56

I'll love an en-suite and it is a must-have in my book, especially as I often need to wee during the night.

nalabae · 22/01/2022 04:48

Dunno about this forum but I’m a cleaner and they are often full of mould I wouldn’t get them if k could

On Love it or List it there was a house with an en-suite and it looked like a square bedroom with a shower in the corner, it was really odd looking, not like a proper room

MrsGatsby99 · 22/01/2022 07:19

I like mine, really practical and well-designed but we designed it and built it ourselves, maybe that's the difference.
We also have people to stay quite regularly so it's great to have a guest bathroom and our bathroom.
Not worried about hygiene issues. There is a window which we open as necessary, extractor and i clean the en suite regularly. 🛀

JustJam4Tea · 22/01/2022 07:41

There’s en suites and en suites.

Old house it was the converted box room, huge window, big room, a bath, great shower really light, great ventilation, proper door, other end of room from bed. It was my sanctuary. We had no downstairs loo so visitors used family bathroom. Loved having a bathroom that was just ours. Big enough for 2 of us to use it in morning.

New house, it’s still a decent sized en suite, window, great shower, but not really big enough for two people, there’s inconsiderate husband use…which is the real issue.

I’d take over the family bathroom but it is really the husband pooing in there that’s the issue.

notanothertakeaway · 22/01/2022 08:02

I'm not a fan of en suites.two bathrooms would be ideal for me

RosesAndHellebores · 22/01/2022 10:41

I think the issue often is not en-suite or no ensuite but the fact that many newish homes now have two or three en-suites and a family bathroom but very little storage/wardrobe space in small bedrooms. Factor in an integral garage downstairs and an open plan kitchen/family room plus a tiny snug and one can't help thinking three good sized bedrooms and a family bathroom would be better when there is barely sufficient space overall for familyblife and all its activities.

Compare and contrast to a larger house with 2/3 receptions, study and four or five good sized bedrooms with generous wardrobe, desk and cupboard space and two or three ensuites all with windows and plenty of space. Plus a large family bathroom.

It becomes a different argument.

That's a person problem not an ensuite problem.

Mould isn't just confined to ensuite bathrooms. It can develop anywhere where there isn't sufficient ventilation.

CowboyJo · 22/01/2022 14:22

Oh trust me I'd LOVE an en-suite...
The people who hate them probably don't realise how lucky they are Grin

We are planning to get rid of one soon.

Derrymum123 · 22/01/2022 14:51

Yep, my husband's toilet smells. No air freshener made can work effectively on that.

RampantIvy · 22/01/2022 14:58

I very much doubt that what comes out a man's backside smells any worse than what comes out of a woman's.

Is there no window in your loo @Derrymum123?

speakout · 22/01/2022 18:16

I very much doubt that what comes out a man's backside smells any worse than what comes out of a woman's.

I agree, but many men spend more time on the lavvi, turn it into a recreational activity, sit ages before wiping.
Women tend to dump and go, hence minimising guff.

Katyppp · 22/01/2022 18:23

I think MN hates things that most people regard as slightly special.
It makes posters feel superior that they are so tasteful they are not impressed by Hotel Chocolat, Yankee Candles and en suites.
And as for Bayliss and Harding...

LadyIckenham · 22/01/2022 18:27

I don't understand either, OP. We are currently costing up adding an additional
bedroom to our place and it looks like the most cost effective way of doing so will be for us to take another bedroom, divvy up ours and convert the en suite to a family shower room (basically move the door).

I am reasonably sure this will devalue the house but we'll be here some time yet and it will work much better for us. Am gutted at the prospect of losing the en suite, though!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/01/2022 20:21

@StoneofDestiny

We had one I hated it. I don't want to hear exh using the toilet or smelling it. Vile

Who are all these noisy smelly husbands? Maybe they need dietary advice? If they were like that - would you rather they smelled out the family bathroom and made so much noise they disturbed the family and guests.
How does anybody use the family bathroom after they have stenched it out anyway?

The husbands are noisy and smelly but the wives have bowel conditions Wink
turnaroundtime · 22/01/2022 21:22

People seem to have confused 'en-suites' with 'badly designed en-suites'. Just because done are shoe horned in or lack ventilation it doesn't mean there is anything bad about en-suites per se. It's like saying 'I hate spare bedrooms' or 'I hate second cars'. Makes zero sense. No reasonable person would turn their nose up at another bathroom. And that's what an en-suites is. A bathroom for the sole use of the users of one bedroom. Who thinks 'oh no, I'd much rather not have my own bathroom. I'd much rather share with my 3 kids' or 'no no, I'd rather have another cupboard'. If you'd rather have another cupboard your problem is you live in a small place, not that en-suites are bad

A580Hojas · 22/01/2022 21:26

I think a family bathroom and a second bathroom or shower room is ideal. And a downstairs loo too.

User2638483 · 22/01/2022 21:27

Can’t speak for whole of Mumsnet 🤔 but I don’t ‘hate them’, I just personally don’t understand why they put them into to small modern houses
