Just curious 🤨

I'm somewhere in the middle. I like the master to have an ensuite in a house but I don't like the trend of each bedroom having a small ensuite at the expense of bedroom space.
We have a family bathroom, a downstairs loo and then our own ensuite and that suits us perfectly.

Skeumorph · 21/01/2022 10:12

It's a no from me!

  • more disturbance in night if someone needs the loo: I always wake if DH uses one when we're in a hotel.
  • I like original features in houses and HATE seeing a room chopped up - worst of all is the plasterboard boxed-out corner where you can even see the coving going through the new ensuite hamster box in the corner.
  • Trend for newer builds to have fuck all storage, fuck all real space in a 'master' bedroom - you'll be lucky if you can fit a proper bed, large wardrobe and desk/dresser in - so that a smallish 3 bed can fit in a family bathroom, en suite and downstairs loo. FUCK OFF WITH ALL THE SPACE BEING GIVEN TO BATHROOMS.

Yep great if it fits the space and is well done. Great for a guest bedroom. Would not want one in my own bedroom.

speakout · 21/01/2022 10:13

I don't want toilet smells, steam or the noise in my bedroom.

rooarsome · 21/01/2022 10:13

We had one in our old house and I actively looked for a house without one when moving.

Sofiegiraffe · 21/01/2022 10:14

I don’t want a funny-shaped bedroom with a chunk taken out for a poo closet.

😂😂😂 wtf. I love my en suite. Nothing wrong with them.

oldwhyno · 21/01/2022 10:14

AIBU to not understand how some people don't seem to be able to understand how some people might have different opinions to some other people?

threecupsofteaminimum · 21/01/2022 10:15

I love mine, I don't know how I ever coped sharing one bathroom with the ex!

Tbf I don't poo in there, it's a multi use dressing room, make-up space and airing cupboard for drying washing!

I can literally slide out of bed in the night take 2 steps for a mum wee and back in the warm covers!

getsanta · 21/01/2022 10:15

I love mine so much. And love that I don't have to share the family bathroom with my kids!

Franklin12 · 21/01/2022 10:16

I like mine too but people who use then in the middle of the night and DONT shut the door - that's the issue!

Not in our house though...My DH used to try and creep around and was never quiet so he had the bright idea of using a torch. Can you imagine someone in your room in the middle of the night with a torch. Not one of his finest moments because he didnt tell me he was going to do this. I nearly got the knife from under the bed!

Sofiegiraffe · 21/01/2022 10:17

I wonder how many people who hate them only know them from relatively small houses / new builds where the en suite is cramped without a window; whereas those who quite like them have bigger houses with more space, windows etc and it actually makes sense to have.

Yes. We have a larger Victorian style house and the en-suite is quite large and definitely not shoe horned in. It has a large window too.

halulat · 21/01/2022 10:17

Love ours. Added to the bedroom
When we extended along with a small dressing room.
It is as big as our main bathroom, and has a large window so is not dark. Godsend when living with teens hogging the main bathroom and very handy when isolating .
Have seen new builds though where bedrooms hugely compromised to squeeZe an en-suite in.

limitedperiodonly · 21/01/2022 10:17

They stink, they have noisy shit-munching loos that clog up and no plumber will touch and I don't live in a hotel.

Subbaxeo · 21/01/2022 10:17

@BarbaraofSeville

I think MN just hates everything to do with normal bodily functions.

See also tradespeople who use your facilities while working at your house. MN seems to think they must have missed the memo where 'everyone' times their bowel movements so they only ever go in the morning, at home, before setting out for the day.

This made me laugh-I definitely would not poo at work so yes, I tend to do it in the morning at home before setting off!
RampantIvy · 21/01/2022 10:18

DH gets up for a wee in the middle of the night every night and he never wakes me up. Are people light sleepers or do they have noisy selfish partners?

I like that we have our own bathroom when we have guests. They use the house bathroom and we use the ensuite.

TrickyD · 21/01/2022 10:20

Our house originally had seven bed rooms, large Victorian. At some stage, probably in the 30s judging by the wonderful tiles, one big bedroom was converted into a bathroom. The tiny former bathroom serves as a walk in wardrobe/linen cupboard now.
When we moved here, the sixth bedroom opened onto the landing but adjoined ours. We blocked the landing door up and converted the bedroom into to a spacious en suite. opening from our bedroom.
DH is trained not to use it except when visitors are staying. I hate going to stay with friends if there is no en-suite just for us, I would not be without ours.
We are now down to five bedrooms, perfect for the two of us but plenty of room for family when they visit.

SickAndTiredAgain · 21/01/2022 10:24

I don’t have an automatic dislike of all en suites, some are lovely.
But I do hate when they’ve been squeezed into the corner of a bedroom, so you end up with a smaller bedroom, and a tiny (sometimes windowless) en suite. I guess I just don’t automatically think any en suite must be better than no en suite.

ineedsun · 21/01/2022 10:25

I’m not keen, not through jealousy as has been suggested (which was hilarious amd predictable) but because of all the reasons that other people have mentioned. Too like a hotel, don’t really want to hear other people using the bathroom (not because I have hang ups but because the sound of someone shitting is not something I’m interested in hearing). No ventilation, usually not well designed. Another room to clean.
Just feels totally unnecessary

kickupafuss · 21/01/2022 10:25

I love mine! I often get up in the night so like having it nearby.

User48751490 · 21/01/2022 10:26

@spongbob

-often no Windows, lacks ventilation. A fan isn't really as good as opening a window and getting fresh air -adjacent to bedroom is a room where people piss and shit
  • waste of space, would rather have added bedroom area
  • extra cleaning
-find it tacky, reminds me of a hotel

After living with an en-suite I will actively turn down any house/flat that has one even if great in other respects.

That sums it up nicely.
User48751490 · 21/01/2022 10:26

Definitely not jealous of having an extra toilet to clean 🤣🤣

RampantIvy · 21/01/2022 10:29

Blimey. Cleaning one more toilet isn't exactly an onerous task. I would far rather have a spare loo (in a house where 2 of us suffer from IBS) than have to wait in discomfort for the loo to be free.

User48751490 · 21/01/2022 10:31

But it's not just a loo though is it? There's an extra shower and sink. Extra floor to clean etc. No thanks.

3peassuit · 21/01/2022 10:32

I love ours though I think they are often shoehorned into new builds at the expense of storage space. A small 2 bedroomed flat does not need 2 en-suites and a guest loo.

Pyri · 21/01/2022 10:32

Doesn’t everyone have a cleaner though?
DrGoogleSaysSo · 21/01/2022 10:33

I would love to have one. If I manage to move house that's on my wishing list.
