Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

200 replies

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

There are a few in Urmston, Flixton and Stretford on rightmove within budget but they will need some work. Hayeswater rd stands out as a decent shout, very close to the Grammar school and a nice area. If you are willing to look outside of the main pooular areas you could get much more though. Rochdale is not great, but Norden and Bamford are nice. Milnrow decent. Oldham not great but Shaw and Delph are.

Snoozer11 · 14/01/2022 15:57

@userxx I don't think money talked.

So how the hell did two millionaire kids get away with murder I wonder 🤔.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 14/01/2022 18:13

You need to look at Bury or Ramsbottom

gluenotsoup · 14/01/2022 19:36

There are pockets of good or not so good on every town in Manchester, from inner city to suburbs, to further out, just like every other city.
Realistically, £280k is going to be limiting in some areas, rules others out and so on. But, find the good pockets and get the best you can afford. As I said before, Manchester is expensive. The same places are always coming up in these threads - Didsbury, Heatons, Sale and so on, but there are so many other places that are not just ok, but good places to raise a family.

How are oldham and rochdale 'not great' ? Thousands of ordinary people are happy to live there. Whole towns are discarded because they don't meet some weird MN dictated standards.

Oldham is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country - that's according to its own council, nothing to do with 'MN dictated standards'. I would suggest that those who are happy to live there either have emotional/sentimental/familial attachment to the area, or don't have the opportunity to leave.
Likkleredridinghood · 14/01/2022 22:01

@Shmithecat2 Absolute rubbish. There are still decent ordinary people living there. Writing off whole communities because they aren't 'naice' is pathetic. Many towns up here are like Oldham with the same levels of deprivation but we aren't all anti social yobs. Yes I despair that we don't have posh coffee shops or trendy boutiques but we also have a great quality of life, good schools on the whole, houses are affordable and amazing countryside on the doorstep. Bizarre Confused

I didn't say anything about how decent or yobbish the people were. Confused

House prices are nuts. How do young couples get on the ladder when some basic properties are 200k. It’s crazy.

Dextersdaddy · 15/01/2022 00:02

I live in Oldham, we moved here 10 years ago. We are 10 minutes away from Uppermill, we moved here because our house is great and the area is actually good. I come from a very nice village in Halifax but the prices are ridiculous, we'd never get a house the size of ours for the same price.
Oldham Centre is pretty dire but the stuff that Oldham used to put on pre covid was fantastic (Oldham Gallery used to do so much great stuff), my parents can't believe how much goes on in Oldham and it really is good.
Would I move back to Yorkshire, yeah probably because I'm sentimental about it! But I know I'm lucky to live where I live now.

@CoastalWave

I'd try Culcheth way personally> Still close to manchester , but a lot lot nicer and you'll get more for your money. Culcheth High is a decent high school too

The person who posted about..House is Twiss Green Road - really really nice round there. Quite well to do!

How very interesting, that is to me.

My FIL was brought up near Twiss Green Elementary in Culcheth and my husband attended the school despite living in Leigh.

My husband has a mild accent from Culcheth and people often comment on how it's so different from a typical Leigh accent and often explain to me that it's because "it's so lovely there" 🤔 I'm not entirely sure what that is supposed to mean.

I'm from Texas and it sort of boggles my mind that there is so much difference in houses, towns, manner of speaking within a seemingly small geographic area such as Leigh and Culcheth.

Anyways, I was just musing...

The house is indeed nice on Twiss Green.

HappyDays40 · 15/01/2022 03:03

Some beautiful countryside round Rochdale. I worked for the council on a contract some very nice places to live.

GroollyBaby · 15/01/2022 07:15

Does it need to be actually in Manchester OP?

There are some nice places not too far outside of it Marple, New Mills, Bramhall, parts of Glossop. Although they can be quite expensive

WhatDidISayAlan · 15/01/2022 10:12

I’m in Oldham, in North Chadderton - it’s lovely. I live on the edge of Tandle Hill, so lots of countryside right from the door but also in suburbia if that makes sense. I don’t really go into Oldham much - I find it so hard to drive round - but it’s well located. We cycle up the canal all the way to Hebden, and the Pennines aren’t far away for walking and days out.

The thing I like about living in Nrth Manchester is that it’s fairly close to so many others for days out. We haven’t had a foreign holiday for two years but we’ve had days and weekends away in the Lakes, the Peaks, Hebden, Saltaire, Liverpool, Leeds, over to see the Gormley sculptures at Crosby, etc.

I’m looking to move (inherited house which is too big for me) - and I’m looking at Shaw. It’s only the other side of Buckstones Road to Saddleworth, it’s on the tram line, close to the M60/M62, house prices are still sensible-ish. There are also an awful lot of bungalows, which seem to be catnip to Mumsnet users for some reason. The thing I like about Oldham, versus places like Rochdale (and Middleton in particular where I’m originally from), is that it’s really invested in its schools - lots of newly rebuilt ones, and its parks and leisure centres. Alexandra Park, Dogford Park, Foxdenton and Chadderton Park are all great, and the new Northern Roots place planned for Oldham is going to be amazing.

Whenever anyone on here asks about living in Manchester ,everybody piles on to talk about the south of the city ,I lived in Bury when I was growing up there are some lovely areas ,Greenmount ,Ramsbottom,Walshaw etc plus the scenery!
I now live in Bolton admittedly in a not so nice area,but there are some nice areas ,Edgeworth ,Entwhistle ,Harwood ,Turton ,and Rivington is only a drive away .

We used to live in Rossendale but would move to south Manchester if we ever go back. I think it's because I always imagine the weather is better the other side of the city. But I don't know if this is the case. You can imagine how the weather was in the valley and it's put me off north Manchester forever!

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 15/01/2022 11:04

@Crunched

I would recommend Stockport. I think it may be a good investment.
Cheapest house ..ie 2 ved terrace in stockort is about 200k It is really expensive. The op is kidding herself with her wants and her budget
x2boys · 15/01/2022 11:07

Yes my Grandma lived in Bacup so I appreciate that but we lived in Greenmount just a few miles away when my Grandma was snowed in we often had barely a sprinkling of snow .

Heatons/ burnage border ( but still Stockport) will have properties in that range. I know someone with a 4 bed semi there.

Going into Heaton Moor Central is 'naicer' but the bit between disbury and Heaton Moor is more affordable yet a stones throw from either.

TheOnlyMrsW · 16/01/2022 08:51

@x2boys @BonnesVacances fellow Rossendalian here and the weather is shocking compared to others areas nearby..........DD plays football in Preston and we regularly leave snow, ice, rain or hail here and it's completely different a couple of junctions up the motorway!!!!!
Saying that I've been living back here for nearly 15 years after moving away for a few years and I love how the area is so close to Manchester and "civilisation" but beautifully rural at the same time..... can't see us ever leaving tbh

Yes it was the combination of being rural plus the proximity to Manchester that appealed when we first moved there. We decided to leave when we had around 3 months when it rained every single day! I love Manchester and it's only the weather that puts me off moving back tbh. Everything else about it is great.

FridaRose · 16/01/2022 11:49

I cannot believe a bunch of grown up, middle aged women could make up slang words, like a bunch of teenagers 🤦‍♀️

It's amusing and actually laughable. Why can't you say 'nice'?

On the actual topic, someone suggested Prestwich? It's so expensive there!
I'd also think Withington would be too expensive for your budget as it is so close with Didsbury.

FridaRose · 16/01/2022 11:51

@Donthaveagoodusername

Ellesmere Park area of Eccles Ellenbrook Mosley Common/Tyldesley Kearsley Cheadle Hulme Bramhall Littleborough
Bramhall? Really? Another expensive place out of OP's budget.

You won't get a 3 bed for £300k on the Stockport side of Burnage Lane or anywhere that side of the Heatons for that matter.
I live in Heaton Chapel close to the border with Reddish and you'd struggle this side as well tbh. Maybe pre-pandemic but not now!

If you need decent transport links to Manchester itself I'd look at maybe Edgeley or Levenshulme (I wouldn't describe either as 'naice' but there are decent parts of both and they're close enough to nicer areas like the heatons or cheadle) or if not, further out from stockport so places like Marple or New Mills.
