Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

Preswich or Stretford both full of decent people. Stretford probably pips it for schools. Neither too up themselves like some other bits of MCR.

Hawaiiinthemorning · 13/01/2022 21:45

@dane8

Lived in Manchester all my life , now 64

I defo wouldn’t live in
Levenshulme, Longsight, Gorton, Wythenshawe(all parts) Rusholme, Burnage

Try
Withington, Heald Green, Heaton Norris,
Gee Cross, Romily, marple,

No chance 280/300
Heaton moor, Heaton chapel , didsbury, chorlton,
West didsbury

How on earth is withington not on the first list?!?
LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/01/2022 21:52

Ignore what I said about getting 4 bed in Prestwich :O bloody hell prices have jumped!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/01/2022 21:53

It is lovely here though if you can stretch!

sanbeiji · 13/01/2022 21:55

Currently house-hunting, I live in South Manc and eagerly lapping up all the suggestions!
YANBU to prioritise location, however your budget is too low for a 3 bed 'naice' area as described.
For an area that's not as shitty as Wythenshawe probably (several people warned me not to touch it with a barge pole).
But a naice area? No.

Also a lot of '3 bed' houses have a box sixed 3rd bedroom with little room in the other bedrooms. You can either get a 2 bed with the potential for loft conversion, or just put up with a smaller house and then sell up. You're lucky that you have 2 same sex children.

They have indeed! We were last looking middle of last year, got affordable houses, put on hold because of a family issues we had to sort. Back again and it seems like those affordable houses was a century ago!
Chocrock · 13/01/2022 21:57

In a new city I would rent first to get a feel for an area before buying.

Bofthebang · 13/01/2022 22:00

If you want to live in south Manchester I’m afraid your budget is a non starter. Maybe even for Stockport although I’ve not lived there for many years. Even Wythenshawe is out of your budget for the “naice” parts. East Manchester is where you’d be better looking - Denton, Failsworth, possibly Woodhouses (although probably wouldn’t get the size of property you’re after there..)

Snoken · 13/01/2022 22:02

Maybe Lymm? Lovely village, good schools, but transport is bus only as there is no tram. There isn't much in your price range, in fact only one place: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/114782975#/?channel=RES_BUY.

Snoken · 13/01/2022 22:03

Lymm is also only a few minutes drive from Wythenshawe, and the grammar schools in Altrincham.

MimosaSunrise · 13/01/2022 22:06

I live in Sale and wouldn’t necessarily rule it out. This was one of the first properties that came up on Rightmove, and, having previously lived around the corner for almost ten years, can vouch for it being in a decent part of Sale (Sale Moor). www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/83289228#/?channel=RES_BUY

Two bedrooms, but probably scope for a loft conversion. No garden, just a yard, but there is a park just down the road, and that’s a compromise plenty of people make to live in Altrincham at many times that price!

Worth keeping an eye on, op.

Normski67 · 13/01/2022 22:08

£280k will not go far in Prestwich & Whitefield. However it would get you a 3 bed in some areas if Bury. Look at Tottington, Greenmount, Ainsworth or even Ramsbottom. They are quite rural but with the benefit of Bury having the metro link into the city centre.

Snoozer11 · 13/01/2022 22:21

I find there's no balance in Manchester - it's either rough as fuck or affluent and unaffordable.

But even the rough as fuck places are borderline unaffordable nowadays.

Lymm is lovely but unaffordable

If you’re prepared to do a full refurb, this is in a good location a stone’s throw from excellent schools. It’s a mess but a really good spot in East Didsbury. Not the nicest part of Didsbury but definitely very decent.

Motherdare · 13/01/2022 22:37

Sorry, via that link it’s the School Lane one on at £290k. Total doer-upper!

NancyIris · 13/01/2022 22:39

Can you stretch to 325 or 350? How old are DC?

Near Stretford Grammar: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/118418180

But not naice as such. You can't get naice for that praice any more round here.

JuneOsborne · 13/01/2022 22:48

I dont know Manchester, but when it comes to house, the phrase Location, location, location exists for a reason.

I also know that many areas border the less nice areas and sell for an inbetween price. So try and find the roads that fit that bill. Not just great swathes of areas, bit actual roads.

Where I live (similar to Manchester in lots of respects) I have the wanky postcode but I'm a road away fro the estates. We have an excellent primary school within walking distance (and the choice of about 6 others very nearby) and lots of secondary schools that are well regarded enough. Plus the grammars.

My house, on the most desirable road in this postcode would probably be over £1m. Where it is, £600k. It's a 5 minute walk to those houses! I'm also a 3 minute walk away from the area where, with their postcode, my house would be worth £400k tops.

Find these roads!

Anonymouseposter · 13/01/2022 23:02

South Manchester is much more expensive than North Manchester. I wouldn't want to bring children up in Wythenshawe if I could avoid it. If you want to be near Wythenshawe you might find something in Urmston or Flixton. You would get a lot more for your money in Prestwich or Whitefield and they are on the tram route into the City centre.
Depending where you are working there are very nice areas on the moors at the edges of the towns north of Manchester. Oldham , Bolton and Rochdale aren't very nice but the areas on the moors just outside them are lovely.

I don't necessarily agree.

Areas like Handfroth, Heald green, Cheadle, Cheadle Heath, Heaton Norris (the side furthest from Lanky Hill), bits of Reddish are good examples of middle ground areas.

Parts of Wythenshawe aren't all bad. The Peel Hall estate off simonsway next to heald green is nice. As are parts of baguley where some houses go for 500k!

We were FTB's and bought in Wythenshawe 2.5 years ago. I grew up in Cheadle Hulme which is quite a pricey area so it was a big change. However, my road is lovely and quiet, not had a single issue, neighbours are nice and normal. 3 bed semi, huge garden for 144k. It's now worth over 200k. There's an outstanding school on my doorstep.
Transport links are great too.

I thought I'd hate living here, but I don't at all. People judge, but I think Wythenshawe's changed a lot in the last 10 years or so.

I promise it's not all bad!

maximist · 13/01/2022 23:13

Further north of Manchester is Rossendale, some parts are lovely and whilst prices have gone up lately, they're still reasonable. This house is on for £250k, it needs a good paint job and probably a new kitchen and bathroom, but it's a good solid house, and the schools round about are good I hear (I don't have personal experience).

WutheringTights · 13/01/2022 23:18

Do look at Didsbury, you might be surprised. This is top of budget, ex-housing association and Didsbury border but ticks all your requirements for area.

WutheringTights · 13/01/2022 23:22

West Didsbury (just) but in catchment for Didsbury High (very well-regarded school with fierce competition to get in).

Campervan69 · 13/01/2022 23:31

Sale Moor is cheaper than Sale but still a nice area to live in. You might be able to find something there. But it's not a huge budget tbh.

ZenNudist · 13/01/2022 23:34

I live in Urmston. Its nice but not sure its "naice". Its hardly Hale village is it? It's not cheap, neither is Stretford, Flixton nor Davyhulme.
