Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

There is no way you would get something decent for that price in Prestwich. Prices are rocketing at the moment, no housing stock, offers well over asking price and bidding wars.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/01/2022 20:26

This kind of thing maybe in Greenfield— ? very nice saddleworth small town and on the train

300k for Worsley Grin actually laughed! Good luck with that. Plus secondary schools are proper shite for that side of Salford, bizarre as there’s outstanding primary’s all around.

Monton is nice, has a good feel to it - but again stupidly expensive for its location. Worsley is overrated in honesty for the money, never understood it.

FanGirlX · 13/01/2022 20:37

You'll struggle to get a nice 3 bed in Sale for 300k these days. That ship has sailed.

Stretford?

Fatgalslim · 13/01/2022 20:43

You won't get much in Urmston or Flixton for that budget apart from in the less desirable parts

Trying81 · 13/01/2022 20:43

Does it have to be there exactly? Your money would go further in Warrington / Wigan and parts of Bolton

Timperleybell · 13/01/2022 20:45

@Bywayofanupdate

Don't go to Wythenshawe! I think you might struggle in Sale with your budget too. Maybe Timperley?
Sale is generally a bit cheaper than Timperley. 2 up 2 down terraces in the old part of Timperley were selling quickly last spring / summer at £300k. There may be some cheaper properties south of the bypass but Im not sue if there are many 3 beds. Gatley / Cheadle might be an option; Cheadle Hulme school entry would be unlikely the new Laurus school (sister school) may be possible for Y8 entry but is heavily over subscribed.

Not a chance in Timperley.

Dextersdaddy · 13/01/2022 20:53

300k won't get you much in Saddleworth, I keep looking myself. We are just outside Saddleworth and got so much more for our money.

Daisy829 · 13/01/2022 20:54

The estate that this house is on is on the border of wythenshawe/Timperley just past brooklands roundabout. It’s fine round there to be honest but you are in catchment for Manchester schools. However, I had a family member who got a trafford school for their DD on appeal. If you wanted to go further out have a look at Holmes chapel

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/01/2022 20:55

One reason we didn’t move to Manchester when we looked in the past I didn’t think there were that many nice areas to actually live

You can't have looked that hard then

Daisy829 · 13/01/2022 20:55

@userxx agree. Timperley prices are insane. All of trafford is to be honest.
You might be lucky to find something in broadheath but you’d have to move quickly and also some areas are better than others round there so slim pickings really.

LadyoftheWoods · 13/01/2022 21:00

Urmston, flixton, Burnage, Cheadle, Heaton moor, bits of Stockport are nice. 300 might be a bit tight, prices have gone mad! Be prepared to do a bit of work on the house. Could look further afield towards the peaks- Marple, new mills. You won't get anywhere in didsbury or Chorlton, or even Sale I reckon.

lastqueenofscotland · 13/01/2022 21:01

£300k won’t get you much in most nice bits of Manchester.
Maybe whalley range if your lucky.
Denton is ok. I quite like it and would rather be there than levvy.

4pmwinetimebebeh · 13/01/2022 21:02

There are some lovely areas in Manchester to live. However, the majority of really nice areas (nice high street with independent shops, attractive housing stock, green space, good schools, family friendly, transport links) will be far more costly than £280-300k sadly for a decent sized family home. There will need to be a compromise. We live in south Manchester and moved from central didsbury to a large period semi in old Trafford. It is more affordable but still considerably more than your budget for a 4 bed semi. I would consider a bit further out- Lymm, parts of Macclesfield perhaps?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/01/2022 21:03

no to Heaton Moor. You won't get 3 beds for £300k there anymore. even doer-uppers going for a fair bit more. A relative just sold a small 3 bedder that hadn;t seen any work done in 20 years for well over that.

FanGirlX · 13/01/2022 21:08

@mismigraije

I'm looking for the same as you in Sale. My budget is 100k higher than yours and I'm struggling.

Donthaveagoodusername · 13/01/2022 21:10

Ellesmere Park area of Eccles
Ellenbrook
Mosley Common/Tyldesley
Kearsley
Cheadle Hulme
Bramhall
Littleborough

BasketBlocks · 13/01/2022 21:17

@Boobicoosg

Heaton Moor perhaps?
Heaton Moor is great but Didsbury level prices. Heaton Norris, Heaton Chapel and Heaton Mersey are a bit more affordable, just.
indigoemerald · 13/01/2022 21:24

We’re also just outside of Saddleworth and got so much more for our money too. We looked at Marple and Glossop too as a PP has mentioned, but we would have had to compromise on house size for our budget.

I can’t comment on schools as no DC but our local state secondary school is OFSTED Outstanding.

We looked at other “countryside” towns like Glossop and Marple, both of which are absolutely lovely but

united4ever · 13/01/2022 21:24

The little known place called Oldfield Brow in Altrincham is a good spot for schools especially. Walking distance to the outstanding primary and 3 grammar schools. 300k is maybe a push now but the lower down streets on the estate like Taylor Road, the crescent or stamford avenue may be doable if the market cools a touch this year.

Its also walking distance to Altrincham town centre plus Dunham park (national trust park with wild deer and stately home etc) and close to some really expensive areas. Every house is a family house really with a garden. It is a small estate but way better than Wythenshawe.

StopStartStop · 13/01/2022 21:33

They've just started building these. Behind them isn't blue sky - it's a massive hill, so be aware of water run-off. But it's a lovely area and these will be beautiful.
Jubilee

Donthaveagoodusername · 13/01/2022 21:35

I like Swinton too it has nice parts, especially around Folly Lane

MissFritton65 · 13/01/2022 21:36

@mismigraije I've lived in South Manchester for 35 years and it's always been relatively expensive especially the areas with good schools, transport links, green spaces and village atmosphere. Unfortunately I think you are very unlikely to get a 3 bedroom house in those areas for your budget unless it needs lots of work and even then those properties tend to get snapped up! There are some areas in Stockport on the edges of the more expensive areas that will probably be worth considering as they will become more attractive, for example Edgeley, Heaviley and Offerton. New Mills is definitely worth looking at.

VestaTilley · 13/01/2022 21:37

Sex not gender.

Not sure I’d leave Surrey for Manchester if you’re thinking of schools unless you can afford Manchester Grammar...

Cheshire is lovely. But expensive.
