Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

My son bought in Monton a few years ago and it’s definitely up and coming . Great for the motorway and Trafford Centre plus some nice independent bars and restaurants. Not sure about schools .

LondonQueen · 14/01/2022 06:47

Unfortunately for 300k in Manchester you're not looking at "naice areas" unless you are willing to take on a renovation project, Is that a compromise you'd be willing to make? You could get a great property for a lot less in a decent area.

CrackerGal · 14/01/2022 06:58

🤣 I don't like that either 😂😂🙈

CrackerGal · 14/01/2022 07:03

Sorry the quote didn't work, my response was to someone saying thank you for using nice.

Lex345 · 14/01/2022 07:51

Parts of Manchester are nice. Parts of Stretford, Sale, Altrincham, Flixton, Urmston and Chorlton. There are a couple of Grammar schools that have good reputations. Close to the Trafford Centre if you like that kind of thing. Areas to avoid are those closest to the city centre as a general rule. Partington is considered up and coming. Although they fall into Salford, Cadishead, Irlam and Peel Green are also OK areas. On the north side, you will have to be very choosy and visit the location. Prestwich is nice.

@VestaTilley

Sex not gender.

Not sure I’d leave Surrey for Manchester if you’re thinking of schools unless you can afford Manchester Grammar...

Cheshire is lovely. But expensive.

Except on the leader board of top schools in the country are

Altrincham Grammar - Girls
Altrincham Grammar - Boys and they're non-fee paying
Manchester High
Manchester Grammar
Withington girls

There's 1 school in Surrey on the list

Sooooo get your facts straight- Manchester out performs schools in Surrey by a landslide

Shmithecat2 · 14/01/2022 10:13

I worked in Wythenshawe for a few months, it is indeed horrid. YANBU.

Coldilox · 14/01/2022 10:19

I live in Prestwich, you could probably get a 3 bed in budget but you’d have to be quick, prices have been rocketing as the area becomes more and more popular. Good schools, nice feel to the town with lots of independent bars and restaurants. Having Heaton Park on the doorstep is amazing. Other nice parks too. Brilliant transport links (M60, trams). Easy access to Lancashire and the Penines. We moved here from South Manchester nearly 10 years ago and haven’t looked back, just moved house within Prestwich a year ago and no plans to move anywhere else. Son at primary school, and we were in the brilliant position where we got our first choice of school but would have been happy with any of our choices.

tfresh · 14/01/2022 10:33

A lot of the people offering advice in this thread might to check the calendar, it is not 2010 anymore.

You're not getting a 3/4 bed, in a nice/reasonable bit of any of the following for 300k Sale, Urmston, Prestwich, Whitefield, any of the Heatons.

People saying Didsbury, Alty, Chorlton please have a word with yourself.

At 300k, you'll struggle for Stretford for what you want. This is the current reality. House prices are utterly absurd in South Manchester at the moment.

CheshireSuburbs · 14/01/2022 10:50

OP what are your expectations in terms of commuting into Manchester...and where in Manchester...would it be every day, by car/tram/train/bus, how long would your maximum commute be? Are you after something in a more urban area or are you willing to accept the road nightmare to be in a less urban area. I have worked in stockport before now and lived 8-9 miles away and the commute has been an hour at its worst and i may as well have lived 20 miles away, wouldnt have made much difference.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/01/2022 11:01

@tfresh yes I was guilty of this but in my defense it's only been 4 years since I bought a nice 3 bed family home for £235, I'm shocked that nearby properties are now on the market for £50k more :/

There are 3 beds in OP's budget near where I am but the 3rd bedroom is a tiny box room in them all rather than 3 proper bedrooms like mine has.

It's actually batshit, I moved out of the SE to get away from this madness!

housemaus · 14/01/2022 12:30

@Snoozer11

I find there's no balance in Manchester - it's either rough as fuck or affluent and unaffordable.

But even the rough as fuck places are borderline unaffordable nowadays.

And even the nice ones are still rough - I live in a nice bit of Sale, since we lived here we've had a car stolen, 3 neighbours have had burglaries, and the local facebook group is full of burglaries/stolen cars/attacks at the tram stop etc. Several women sexually assaulted on the canal not that long ago...

It's very middle class suburbia, but it's not untouchably nice even with the ridiculous house prices.

It's being near a city I think - I lived in a flat on one of the worst roads of my grotty hometown (think, always in the top 10 worst places to live in the UK) for 3 years and saw/heard of far fewer crimes,

maddening · 14/01/2022 12:41

I would look at Wilmslow, Lymm, Knutsford imo

Absolute crap there are lots of nice area,s in North Manchester too 🙄 Significantly cheaper than south Manchester and much nicer imo .
Teenylittlefella · 14/01/2022 13:03

I would look at Reddish, on the Heaton Chapel borders. It's not "naice" exactly but it's solid, safe and decent. Rather like Stretford, but Stretty has recently gone mad price wise whereas Reddish hasn't. It's certainly less troubled than Wythenshawe, though as people say there are pockets in W'Shawe that are absolutely fine.

It's absolutely obscene that people are struggling to buy a normal house with a bedroom for their children for a third of a million.

I also agree about the nice areas of Manchester being rough. I've heard stories about the grammar school kid who was stabbed to death a few years ago - certainly very pleased I didn't buy a house close to him.

Here is the coach house. You could double the size of it and convert the garage too. No garden but you are just metres from Sinderland Brook and the beautiful walking paths. 10 mins walking will get you to Waitrose, a school and a family pub. Here it is circled on a map.

You must be a slow walker!! 5 minutes to Waitrose from there.
CoastalWave · 14/01/2022 13:39

I'd try Culcheth way personally> Still close to manchester , but a lot lot nicer and you'll get more for your money. Culcheth High is a decent high school too

The person who posted about..House is Twiss Green Road - really really nice round there. Quite well to do!

You'd hardly call Hale Barns rough! What happened to the lad was scandalous. Money talked in that whole situation.
LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/01/2022 13:46

Living in a suburb of Manchester is no different to living in the suburbs of any other city. You would have a lot less crime etc in a village, but OP is in Weybridge at the moment which is large enough to also has its fair share of bored teens etc.

PeggyGa · 14/01/2022 13:58

Mossley -20 mins to Manchester on train. Amazing walks nearby. Nice restaurants and close proximity to Charming g Uppermill. Mossley Hollins great school. You get more bang for buck here

TheOnlyMrsW · 14/01/2022 14:12

OP where will you be working? Rossendale has good transport links to Manchester and is a great place to live, good schools (one a selective grammar but other secondaries are also good), lovely countryside and some fab independent shops and restaurants. I don't know much about different areas of Manchester itself but have lived here over 30 years and worked in both the city centre and the Quays with no issues for travelling Smile
