Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

@MangosteenSoda

I think Levenshulme is meant to be a fast improving area, but significantly cheaper than Didsbury and Chorlton which it’s trying to emulate according to people I know who have bought there (quite possibly deluding themselves though Grin).
Levy had been 'on the up' since I lived there in the 90's. And it still hasn't managed any level of elevation.
tttigress · 13/01/2022 18:55

I think it makes sense to go as far as you can to get in the area you want and then just stay there permanently (thus saving money in the future), maybe highlight to your DH that you are making a big change moving to Manchester for him, so at least you should be able to select the area.

gluenotsoup · 13/01/2022 18:56

I think I would echo a pp in saying maybe plan a two stage move even. I’m always on property sites, and what I would consider to be nice areas and good and outstanding schools with a proper family sized house would be around £450k.

@Boombastic22

How much are you paying in Weybridge Confused
We are renting. £1200 2 bed apartment :)

If you want your kids In Trafford / grammar you need to be in an area and afford private 11+ tuition. The competition is fierce.

housemaus · 13/01/2022 19:04

Sale is lovely but for your budget you're looking at a 2 bed terrace (it's part of why we're moving - can't afford to buy here!).

£325k gets you this... charming do-er upper.

This for £300k in Flixton/Urmston/Davyhulme (I'm not really sure what this area would be classed as) is nice enough and 4(!) bed but it needs a fair bit of work unless you like 90s bathrooms and is still a terrace - parking looks tricky.

Have you thought about slightly further afield - Worsley you'd get slightly more for your money and is villagey but still 10 minutes from the Trafford Centre/the M60. Macclesfield or Glossop if you'd like to be near countryside?

housemaus · 13/01/2022 19:07

Or if you really wanted to go north, Lancaster - nice place to live, house prices more reasonable, and two excellent grammar schools (although competition is fierce I believe).

We are in Marple, Greater Stockport. Described by Jay Rayner as ‘the leafy village where Greater Manchester meets the Peak District’. Fits your budget, good schools, outstanding GP, a couple of nice restaurants and pubs, two (!) train stations so getting to town could not be easier. Loads of young families, parks, walks, friendly vibe.

Wish the local supermarket was nicer than ASDA, but the butcher, fishmonger, deli, greengrocer are good and Tesco is a short drive. Plenty of boutiques, salons, gyms, etc

LulaLulaloo · 13/01/2022 19:10

I would avoid whythenshaw. I used to work there and all of the staff I managed were local to the area and it didn’t give me a good impression, they all had kids and the drama they would talk about was awful! Not just the kids but them too. I lived in Withington and loved it but I was only 22 so it could be completely different now.

Look further afield?

ashorterday · 13/01/2022 19:18

@Angeldust747

£280k for a 3 bed in Flixton?! In comparison you could easily get a 3 bed in wythenshawe for half that
Well yes, but Wythenshawe is a dump.
WhatDidISayAlan · 13/01/2022 19:20

Prestwich or Whitefield the other side of town? No idea about schools as I don’t have kids but you’ve got Heaton Park, the tram, indie shops and restaurants (and Slatterys, drools) and it’s near the M60. You’ll probably get more for your money too.

Justrealised · 13/01/2022 19:33

Look at Bamford or Norden in regards
to schools Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar have school buses which go from Bamford precinct through Norden.

ESGdance · 13/01/2022 19:37

A two stage move is an unnecessary duplication of stamp duty / EA fees / legal fees / moving fees - total waste of ££ + time + stress and no guarantee that you could bridge the mortgage gap.

Choose the best area for secondary school catchment - buy a 2 bed in nice area that you can extend or do roof conversion later. DCs can share until then.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/01/2022 19:42

I live in what would be considered a 'naice' part of Manchester and we get plenty of anti social behavior on the tram too. If that makes you feel any better! Saying that Wythenshawe is a far cry from Weybridge (I'm originally from down that way myself).

Your DH is right about how you raise kids but if you have the funds to move near a good school I don't know why you wouldn't do that.

userxx · 13/01/2022 19:44

A load of new houses are going up on the outskirts of partington, that might be worth looking at.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/01/2022 19:48

You could get a 3 maybe even 4 bed for your budget in Prestwich/Whitefield, good schools but its north Manchester so not near Wythenshawe. Heaton park as PP says is lovely and the town center itself has lovely independent shops.

Sale seems like a nice place but I think they have grammar school system there.

iklboo · 13/01/2022 19:52

Urmston & Flixton probably meet your needs. Good transport into Manchester as well.

gobbynorthernbird · 13/01/2022 20:01

Prestwich/Whitefield would be a push. Prices have rocketed here recently.

Just been researching Prestwich area.. it looks very nice.

I just want a nice area near nice schools.

I lived on a council estate all my life near west London and I just don't want to buy on one if anyone thinks I'm being judgey 😬😬

Don’t think you can to be honest cheapest are over £150000 and that is for the really crappy houses if OP wants a ‘naice’ house to go with the ‘naice’ area she’s going to struggle for that with her budget even in Wythenshawe! Decent non ex-council are pushing the £300,000

There are good

Bywayofanupdate · 13/01/2022 20:08

Don't go to Wythenshawe! I think you might struggle in Sale with your budget too. Maybe Timperley?

Crikeyalmighty · 13/01/2022 20:16

One reason we didn’t move to Manchester when we looked in the past— I didn’t think there were that many nice areas to actually live — even though I like the city centre and thoseareas that werecrelatively nice we’re actually pretty pricey because there wasn’t many of them but a lot of people after the same kind of place. I would suggest somewhere like Greenfield or saddleworth side — we have a friendxwho has a lovely big 4 bed stone semi on the edge of Rochdale — which was actually better I thought than some of the pretty expensive inner areas

Crikeyalmighty · 13/01/2022 20:21

They live in this area— theirs is bigger but it was actually a pretty nice area
