Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

mismigraije · 13/01/2022 18:10

Currently live in weybridge renting.
Dh originally from northern moor in wythenshawe.

We are looking to move to Manchester this year but my issue is.

I want a nice desirable area. Outstanding schools, leisure centres nearby. Something "Naice"Blush

Where as dh would be happy to move back to his part of the woods and try get the cheapest property available. He thinks it's "how you raise" the children that dictates how well they do,
Where as I'm more from the camp, that the environment also nurtures children and I believe schools etc matter. From researching wythenshawe, it just seems abit ehhh and some poor child is always being beaten up on the tram in this area.

Aibu to prioritise location? And which areas are desirable?

Unfortunately I don't think didsbury is in our budget but perhaps sale?

Seconding Alice Street @MimosaSunshine; it's in a lovely little section of Sale Moor, close to everything including green spaces) and a great school catchment area.
Stretching your budget ( sorry) this is nearby and backs onto Moor Nook Park ( with a community-planted orchard!)www.primelocation.com/for-sale/details/60504930/?search_identifier=357519a71cd39e8e7cb3f4d5b1520c3b
Check local estate agents and there are properties in your budget.

Likkleredridinghood · 13/01/2022 23:40

What's with the naice ? Shorthand for bargain property in the north but well away from the natives
plebs ? Grin

Lunificent · 13/01/2022 23:44

Outer Salford e.g. Monton or Swinton. There’s lots of green space, close to motorway network and children can go to the Trafford grammars if they get in.

HerMajestyTheQuern · 13/01/2022 23:45

I’m in Prestwich and prices are sky high, the estate agents reckon my tiny 2 bed terrace with only a back yard will go for £250-275k

dopenguinsdance · 13/01/2022 23:45

This is 'the naice' @Likkleredridinghood www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2954304-What-the-hell-does-Naice-mean

PS Botths' does naicer ham than Waitrose

dopenguinsdance · 13/01/2022 23:46

It's late. Booths does 'naicer' ham

Kinko · 13/01/2022 23:49

Look at Gatley, Cheadle, Heald Green.

I'd need to know your budget really though to advise.

I don't think it's how your raised 100%, by the time you're teenager it's largely to do with the friends you make!

StubbleTurnips · 13/01/2022 23:52

Swinton I think you need to be very aware of the area - the areas nearer monton and worsley are certainly lovely - but cross the east Lancs and it’s not somewhere I’d like to be in the dark. Having lived there for 10years and countless break ins (I blame the newish Asda) / assaults in the neighbourhood we hop footed it down to Culcheth. Much nicer, with just 1 incident of police shooting someone.

Pepperama · 13/01/2022 23:58

I’d consider the four Heatons - great schools and a range of house price options, very desirable with shops, cafes etc . Heaton Moor probably over budget but could strike lucky in the other three Heatons.

I live in Baguley which is part of wythenshawe. I've lived on my quiet street for 5 years, happily as a woman go running at night in the dark every week and I've never had any trouble. also walk home from the tram a lot late and feel very safe. My mum and dad live on a desirable street in Didsbury and the level of car theft and home burglaries is insane. Like on a road of 30 houses 4/5 get broken into each year.

I'm on the brooklands side, a couple of mins walk from the sale postcodes, where my house would cost double. I couldn't say on schools but for 200k you can get a 3 bed terrace with a decent garden here. I think if you manage to find a quiet road in a less desirable area that can be much better than a busy place somewhere 'naice' for crime. My brother lives in reddish and again has a good size 3 bed family home, lovely garden for under 200k. If you have teenagers you need to prioritise the area, but for young kids I think they will be happier with space and green spaces while you save to move to somewhere else before secondary.

Also my experience is from a good few years ago, but I went to school in Didsbury (naice area of South manc) and when I went to uni I realised my school experience maybe wasn't optimum.. lots of drugs and violence compared to others and it was considered a good school!

HappyDays40 · 14/01/2022 00:51

Lived in Wythenshawe for many years, nothing wrong with there above anywhere else.

Yubaba · 14/01/2022 01:19

I would look at North Bury, Greenmount/Tottington/Ainsworth.
Good schools, tram to Manchester, country side on your door step and definitely more house for your money than south of the city.

Imtryingveryhard · 14/01/2022 05:51

@united4ever

The little known place called Oldfield Brow in Altrincham is a good spot for schools especially. Walking distance to the outstanding primary and 3 grammar schools. 300k is maybe a push now but the lower down streets on the estate like Taylor Road, the crescent or stamford avenue may be doable if the market cools a touch this year.

Its also walking distance to Altrincham town centre plus Dunham park (national trust park with wild deer and stately home etc) and close to some really expensive areas. Every house is a family house really with a garden. It is a small estate but way better than Wythenshawe.

Oldfield Brow primary has been downgraded from outstanding to good.
Donthaveagoodusername · 14/01/2022 05:51

Look at Lower Broughton in Salford. It's 1 mile from the city centre, area known as Broughton village, has various new builds and a nice community feel. I live in LB, though not in the nice part sadly!

Donthaveagoodusername · 14/01/2022 05:52

Also agree certain parts of wythenshawe are nice and agree re Peel Hall

Imtryingveryhard · 14/01/2022 05:57

And Altrincham C of E Has been downgraded to Requires Improvement. I know quite a few children have moved to Broadheath Primary School from these two schools.

I know this house has sold but this is a nice area to live in. There is a 2 bed coach house up for sale for @ £200k IIRC on the same development. What another coach house owner has done is secured PP to build a second floor and it looks amazing! It won’t cost £100k (up to your max budget) and will def add value.

Here is the coach house. You could double the size of it and convert the garage too. No garden but you are just metres from Sinderland Brook and the beautiful walking paths. 10 mins walking will get you to Waitrose, a school and a family pub. Here it is circled on a map.

Aibu to want a "naice" property in Manchester?

That is a lovely area of Culcheth to live in! Also look at Winwick, Croft, Glazebury and Lowton.

BarkminsterBlue · 14/01/2022 06:19

If it’s feasible to be north of Manchester for commuting purposes then another one here saying parts of Bury around Kearsley. There are some excellent schools (although a lot of them are faith schools with quite strict church attendance requirements for admissions). I’d start looking around M26.

Snoken · 14/01/2022 06:20

@Frazzled2207

I know it’s tight, but I did link to a house in Lymn within budget so it could be doable.

BarkminsterBlue · 14/01/2022 06:20

PS Kearsley is technically Bolton.

chipshopElvis · 14/01/2022 06:29

Parts of Wythenshawe are fine. It boarders Sale. Parts of Sale are nice, parts are rough just as everywhere. The tram network is massive and goes through rough and nice areas, I'm pretty certain the hooligans didn't say "this is Didsbury, don't hit anyone at this stop". I've never had an issue on the tram, but there are issues. Kids regularly have their bikes stolen in Sale (whilst they are out on them) but there are some nice houses.
