Does anyone really believe that Boris Johnson has suddenly had to go into isolation? How many times over the past months has he blithely disregarded various rules and guidelines as it suited his agenda? Now he's under a bit of well-deserved pressure, and oops-a-daisy! he's in isolation.

The really depressing thing - about Trump in America, Boris Johnson here, and crass right-wing populist idiocracy in general, is that it will have no effect on voters, bar a little disgruntled muttering. We've created a society in which the scum, not the cream, rises to the top. I dread to think what the next couple of decades are going to be like.

I was asking what he did say about meeting people you did not live with outdoors on 20th May 2020.

Irrelevant if he's not talking about people at work. Sue Gray may have a different opinion of course.

I wasn't asking what the rules say about donations to MPs, I was asking whether in your opinion it is acceptable for someone from overseas who is not able to vote in a UK election to give money to an MP.

If it's within the rules then it's fine I suppose - unless the donor turns out to be a Communist spy.

@clavinova What is special about Communist spies that means MPs should not accept their money, but for instance money from a Russian Spy or the Saudi government would be fine?

But discussion has been stifled because it's the Tories in power at the moment and so many are involved, directly or indirectly (or are scared of Aaron Banks & pals' Leave crew, who are rather more cuddly with Russia than is healthy).

Carole Cadwalladr is in court tomorrow;

The Observer and Guardian journalist Carole Cadwalladr will appear in court in London next Friday to defend herself against an accusation of defamation brought by Arron Banks, the multi-millionaire businessman and outspoken backer of Brexit.

Is your point that the funder of the Leave campaign is happy to admit that he met on several occasions members of the Russian embassy?

JaniieJones pops up right on cue with the Chinese Communist Party spy story !

That story has been known since 2017. LDs & Cons also received donations. MI5 and HoC authorities were not kept in the dark. So what has changed?

Why update the story now?

Donated £5,000 to the LDs in 2005 and has links to the Tories. She appears to have also developed a good relationship with David Cameron while he was PM.

And in January 2019, she received an award from then PM Theresa May.

@Clavinova

And have you heard about the spy in the Labour Party?!?!

According to Barry Gardiner he only found out this morning. Wink Wink

@Clavinova According to Pritti Patel, Ms Lee hasn't committed any crimes and no action will be taken against her..... is also a solicitor (regulated under UK law) so an innocent woman has had her reputation destroyed Bojo.to deflect from

If that's the case I am surprised that Barry Gardiner asked her son to resign this morning. He told the LBC host that he didn't even ask the son whether he knew about his mother's activities. Will he re-instate the son and apologise?

Six members of Prime Minister Johnson's Cabinet including Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Business Secretary Alok Sharma, as well as eight junior ministers, have received donations either personally or through their constituency parties from individuals or companies linked to Russia

Just looked up one of the names;

The Conservative party said Lubov Chernukhin was a British citizen “which gives her the democratic and legal right to donate to a political party”,

More story lines than spitting image can cope with. My whole family are at home with covid. I sat and watched that pathetic display whilst trying not to cough up a lung. Morally and ethically bankrupt is an understatement. Poundland trump strikes again.

@Clavinova I am confused, why were you talking about people at work, no one else has been talking about people at work. I am really struggling to see how you can have missed that the big story of the week is that the Prime Minister attended a party on the 20th May 2020 when such a thing was illegal.

@clavinova Unlike you I am up to date on the news and am aware that MI5 have raised concerns about someone who has links to a number of politicians including Prime Ministers.

I share your concern that it appears to have been very easy for the suspected spy to have access to Prime Ministers and other politicians.

Would you be equally concerned if people of other nationalities with no right to vote in the UK were paying MPs?

nancy75 · 13/01/2022 20:59

No amount of ‘spy’ stories and desperate excuses can hide what Johnson has done.
We all know it was a party, we all know he knew it was a party, Johnson is a liar & he’s been caught out (again)

Aphrodite31 · 13/01/2022 21:00

It was so exhaustingly predictable.

He 'charmed' the nation by having enough about him to provide a pantomime figure who would be popular in a daily soap. The facts of his life show he's led it craving female affection, sex, love, validation, and if there's a chance to line the coffers yet further along the way, all to the good.

Even he was astonished at getting the top job. Even he thought is was a joke.

The bad thing about his jovial bluster and buffoonery (oh Boris, bless him! Messy hair, babies, oops a bit too close, lots of fun, laid back, decent? Doesn't mean it, didn't mean it ...) ... is the trail of devastation it all leaves.

He's a character. But not a great one.

Of course he swigged back the wine and scoffed the nibbles. Of course he did. And of course had one rule for his and another for the rest. That's his whole life.

PerkingFaintly · 13/01/2022 21:01

Thanks for the heads-up, Clav, I've been following that story off and on.

Aaron Banks has now admitted meetings with the Russian embassy, but IIUC is trying to make something of Cadwalladr describing the relationship as covert and saying that he told lies about it.

And in general, Cadwalladr has been doing sterling work looking at the activities of the Banks crowd. Which is pissing them off no end.

For anyone interested:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/nov/19/my-fear-and-fury-in-the-eye-of-the-russia-leave-storm
I clicked a link on Twitter. It was from Leave.EU’s official account – the Ukip-allied Brexit campaign headed by Nigel Farage. “WATCH @carolecadwalla takes a hit as the Russian conspiracy deepens.”
[...]
The video was a clip from the film Airplane!, in which a “hysterical” woman is told to calm down and then hit, repeatedly, around the head. The woman – my face photoshopped in – was me. And, as the Russian national anthem played, a line of people queued up to take their turn. The last person in the line had a gun.

So far, so weird. Here was a registered political organisation that had gained the support of millions of law-abiding, well-meaning people, promoting violence against women and threatening a journalist. It was a “joke”. A joke underpinned by violent menace. From an organisation that has also made no secret of its links to the Russian state. Leave.EU’s Twitter account retweets Russia Today and the Russian embassy as a matter of course.

Home Secretary warns there will be more agents like Chinese spy Christine Lee.

Priti Patel said stronger laws were needed to protect against foreign agents.

The disclosures came after MI5 took the rare step of issuing MPs and peers with a warning about Lee’s cultivating of British politicians to secure a “UK political landscape” that was “favourable” to China.

Ms Patel said it is “deeply concerning” the Chinese Communist Party was targeting British parliamentarians.
