I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

Oh definitely get one. It will save your arms so much. I've seen people with really lovely ones. I don't think they make them granny anymore, well not the ones I've seen. I've also seen people use small suitcases.

Roosk · 13/01/2022 13:32

My extremely soigné, well-heeled Parisian friend always takes one to the local market with him. Lots of children at DS’s school also use them instead of schoolbags.

Mamamia7962 · 13/01/2022 13:34

I've seen younger people with these shopping trolleys. They aren't just in dark colours now either. I've seen some lovely bright colours and patterned ones. If you want one buy one, no one will think anything of it.

RedCandyApple · 13/01/2022 13:34

I wouldn’t use one, I’m sorry but I would be too embarrassed too, I know I shouldn’t be but round near me they are definitely only used by elderly people, my mum is 60 and even she said she wouldn’t have one, she uses suitcase maybe try that instead?

PinchOfVom · 13/01/2022 13:35

You lot are daft

I had one living in Spain years ago and plenty young Folk had one

Glitzy colours etc

Sgtmajormummy · 13/01/2022 13:35

I often think about the difference between traditional and trolley suitcases- hardly anybody uses the old style nowadays because it makes no sense to carry all the weight.
Same for shopping trolley bags. Especially if you don’t drive. There are some cute ones available and they’re all the rage in Spain. Mine has three wheels on each axle so it can walk up stairs with much less effort.
It’s a no-brainer IMO.

AlexaShutUp · 13/01/2022 13:36

We have a lot of Chinese students in our town. Most of them are very chic and stylish. I've noticed that it's also very common for them to have these shopping trolleys! So go for it, I say!

Wiredforsound · 13/01/2022 13:36

I have one. They hold about 3 bags of shopping worth and are really useful. It means I’m more likely to walk the half mile to do a top up shop than take the car. Nobody notices or cares. It’s just like pull along luggage really. I got mine in IKEA for about £20.

DysmalRadius · 13/01/2022 13:36

I have one - my kids and I are out a lot and carrying lunch for all of us plus several litres of water was doing my back in. Add in winter with all the coats and hats etc that come on and off every five minutes and I realised I was making life more difficult for myself by not having wheels so I got a shopping trolley. I've seen way more 'young' people with them than older folk, so I think the stigma surrounding them may be remembered more than current!

Sunpotter · 13/01/2022 13:36

i used to use a small rolling suitcase, but whenever i see somebody younger with one I am jealous. You see students with them it's not a granny thing anymore, like many 'old-fashioned' items, it's become green and virtuous :P

You can definitely get a funky one, or one that says ' i used to be a plastic bottle' or whatever, more people should walk to the supermarket if they can, it's a good thing.

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 13/01/2022 13:37

Get a nice looking one and you'll be fine. I wouldn't have an old lady one but you'll definitely be able to get cooler looking ones.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2022 13:37

YABU to be embarrassed. They're a practical solution to the problem of carrying heavy shopping from the shops in walking distance.

We rented an apartment in Tenerife and one was provided. There was a supermarket 5-10 minutes away that we'd have struggled to carry drinks from, but the trolley made it a breeze, so we used it a few times.

Winniewonka · 13/01/2022 13:38

YANBU. If you need one, get one. The older you get, the more you realise, people are not looking at you and they are just not interested. They're not going to tell their friends and family "Guess what, I saw someone with a shopping trolley and she wasn't even 40!"

Alconleigh · 13/01/2022 13:38

I have one, it's fabulous! I am 45. It's a Spanish one, nice blue colour and not the old lady tartan look. I don't drive either and it's a god send if I am doing heavy shopping. Especially as I live up a big hill.

No one out there gives even a mouse sized shit about what what you're wearing / what bag you are using etc. realising this is one of the great benefits of getting older.

Plumpciousness · 13/01/2022 13:38

Get one, get one!!

I used to look down my nose at them but then the pandemic hit and I walked to/from the supermarket to avoid getting the bus. I started using my mum's trolley and it's so much easier! 18 months on and I'm still using it.

FrankGrillosWrist · 13/01/2022 13:38

You could go down the suitcase route OP, quite a few people do that. I think shopping trolleys are more popular than ever now with younger people. Plus you won’t look half as daft as the people who struggle with their bags. Or there’s always a large rucksack.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 13/01/2022 13:39

There's some funky ones about now, go for it.

Kenworthington · 13/01/2022 13:40

I’ve got one of these. They are Epic . I’ve got the Rambo with neon frame

minou123 · 13/01/2022 13:42

I had one in my 20s. I didn't drive and it was brilliant.
And it was a "granny one". Grin

Was I embarrassed? Not at all.

I'm not really fussed about what strangers may think of me.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/01/2022 13:42

I wouldn't personally as I like to have my hands free and also have bad width perception so would worry about whacking someone with it. I use a backpack but it sounds like that wouldn't work for you. From a style point of view they have become quite popular with younger people in my city!

Crowdfundingforcake · 13/01/2022 13:42

Mine is from IKEA and has big blue daisies on it - I use it for carting heavy files around campus, for fruit and veg shopping at local market and general shopping if DH has the car. Only comments I've ever received are along the 'oooh, that's a good idea, where did you get it' line.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/01/2022 13:44

Don't hesitate to get whatever makes your life easier I'm disabled and splashed out on a Carlett one( bag on a pushchair frame basically) carrying shopping is literally painless
There are loads of funky styles now

mamakoukla · 13/01/2022 13:44

Isn’t worth causing damage to yourself? I think sometimes we are more self conscious about things than we need to be eg I judged myself for running and would overdress as was too ashamed to be seen with an extra muffin top around my middle. I hit the bullet and made myself go out there without layers to hide under and quickly found out that it didn’t really matter. In fact, it was liberating.

Please go out and find a trolley that works for you, in a print or colour you love. Enjoy the liberty and freedom it will give you

galacticpixels · 13/01/2022 13:44

They're actually trendy in my area now. Loads of young people using them.

I used to long for them to become "a thing" when I was in uni trying to drag bags of shopping home.

WindInTheWillows7 · 13/01/2022 13:45

I'm in my mid-20s and proudly sport a bright green shopping trolley!
