Aibu to be too embarrassed to get a shopping trolley.

I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

I have never used these but I don't drive so could be a great idea. My only question is, probably a stupid one, but how do you manage dragging this and your supermarket trolley at the same time 🤔.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/01/2022 14:32

(I’m 43 but got it a couple of years ago - primarily to take to the school fete in fact, but useful for the shops too)

HepzibahGreen · 13/01/2022 14:32

I had one after I stopped using a big pram, years ago.

But...really what is so awful about being a granny or an old lady?
I just hate the way "old lady" is used as a thing no one would ever want to be.

scaredsadandstuck · 13/01/2022 14:32

@LadyinRead

what do you do with it whilst you're actually shopping?

You fold it up and hang it on the little hook on the shopping trolley.

If you're at a bigger supermarket you can scan as you shop and just put everything in it as you go round.
Inthesameboatatmo · 13/01/2022 14:32

I got one last week op . I'm mid 40s.i couldn't give a shit what anyone thinks

IsadoraQuagmire · 13/01/2022 14:33

I'm 25 and I've got one. I can't imagine caring what anyone else thinks about it though!

MananaTomorrow · 13/01/2022 14:33

I have one @Nousernameforme!!

DH hates going out with me and the trolley but they are ace!
In France it’s a VERY normal thing to have to go and do your shopping. The fact I am french probably helps me not feeling awkward but… they are so helpful! I couldn’t go to the market wo it!

Please go for it. Find one with funky drawings (I bought mine at IKEA years ago) if it makes it looks less ‘elderly’ iyswim.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2022 14:34

@CharlotteRose90

Oh god my mum had one of the ones on 4 wheels when I was in high school. I hated shopping with her as they are frankly embarrassing. Then luckily we got a car so she got rid of it.
Now it's embarrassing that people drive short distances, clog up the roads and cause pollution to get shopping that these trolleys would allow them to do by walking, so now they are a good thing to have, not an embarrssing bad one.
pigsDOfly · 13/01/2022 14:35

I lived in Brighton about 10 years ago and they were quite trendy there then with quite a number of young people; I also had one but I was in my early 60s then.

Brighton, for those who don't know it is, in parts, very hilly. Parking is impossible so I frequently used to walk everywhere; trying to lug heavy bags of shopping up steep hills is bloody hard work.

Loved my trolley. Absolutely could not have managed without it.

Don't worry about what some stupid people might think OP. Having a trolley will make so much difference to your life.

BuanoKubiamVej · 13/01/2022 14:36

I have one but it's less of a life-saver than you think - if your shopping is heavy enough to be a pain to carry, then the trolley is still a pain to manuever and to pull along. If its contents is light enough for it to be easy to handle, the chances are you have a small enough amount that you could have carried it anyway.

You can get trolleys with 4 wheels rather than 2 which might be easier. With the 2-wheel versions, you have to support an appreciable fraction of the weight on your hand as you pull it along.

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/01/2022 14:37

I would get one and also a mobility scooter. You can get them for £150-£200 on eBay often for sad reasons hardly used.

TheCanyon · 13/01/2022 14:37

I got one at 26 after a spanish holiday and realising how much nicer shopping was. I love him, he's called Bert.

Giggorata · 13/01/2022 14:38

I've had one for ever, before they started doing them in fab colours and snazzy patterns.
I bought a four wheel tartan one from a charity shop and sprayed it metallic colours: purple, pink and silver. The stuff I could get in there - and I could also put big stuff on top.
I also have some two wheel patterned ones, and always keep at least one in the van.
And, once again, less of the old lady/granny ageist shit, you lot!

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/01/2022 14:40

I can tell you that loads of my daughter's uni friends have them. Indeed Anais Gallagher, daughter of Noel, has one too. If it's alright for her 🤷🏻‍♀️

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/01/2022 14:40

I was in Asda the other day and was buying a plastic box. I put all my shopping in it and the man on the till said oh we get wheely suitcases and all sorts here.

cmcc22 · 13/01/2022 14:41

I lived in Spain for 3 years - everyone uses them. Even DH would take it when walking to the shops. I would happily use one here

SherBear1971 · 13/01/2022 14:41

I have a wicker one which I use to dump things in to take to my bedroom which is at the end of a long corridor in a bungalow. I have had it since I was 20 and it has been used for laundry and shopping over the years. If it ever dies I am going to by a snoopy one Grin

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 14:41

Had a shopping trolley (the one with two wheels that you pull behind you) in my late 20s to early 30s. Saved me a whole lot of shoulder pain and backache from walking back home lugging so many bags. Didn't even think how it looked to anyone, I'm all for practicality and what works for me. Opinions be damned!Smile

EveningOverRooftops · 13/01/2022 14:41

I’m younger than you. I have one.

I’m gothing it out atm. Skulls allll over it.

Use it regularly. My back and bank balance is thanking me

I’m actually going to splurge on another one so when DC is off school we can take both to the shops and do a bigger food shop.

Blupblup · 13/01/2022 14:42

God, just get one and forget what other people think! I'm nearly 50 and also hyper mobile. It hasn't caused me many problems till the last few years but now I have such painful issues with my wrists and elbows, I'd do anything to protect my joints.

AllKindsOfWrong · 13/01/2022 14:42

@LadyinRead I put a tie wrap on the handle, which I then hang over the supermarket trolley hook.

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 13/01/2022 14:42

I have been thinking about it myself. I am a mad keen devourer of youtube videos about everything French and apparently it is normal there. I love the Rad Union ones linked to upthread.

BlankTimes · 13/01/2022 14:42

OP, as you have hypermobile joints, do please be aware that any trolley can twist when you go down a kerb dragging the trolley behind you unless you line it up properly and make sure both wheels leave the high level together

It only takes a little practise to get the technique, but it's much better than having a rotator cuff or worse injury.

You may find that wheeling it in front of you to change levels is easier.

Don't be put off, but do take a little time to learn how to use it in a way it won't put any strain on your joints.

scooterbear · 13/01/2022 14:43

Yaaas I had one and I loved it. People took the piss but I cared not. I once took it to a festival and others were actually very jealous as they struggled in under the weight of their back packs and I strolled in with my trolley cool as a cucumber. Surprisingly good in deep mud too...

Itsalmostanaccessory · 13/01/2022 14:43

I got one at 18 when I lived in the city centre. The nearest proper big supermarkets was a 25 minute walk and I couldn't afford a taxi there and back every week.

Get one in a good pattern. No one will care.
