I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

Get one you’ll never look back. I’m 39 and I use mine every single time no one looks at me at all. It’s a GAME CHANGER! I wiggle my bum down the road with pride, no money on taxis no constant stopping putting down heavy bags, it’s wonderful!

TooManyPJs · 13/01/2022 14:44

Loads of young people have them now. I quite want one because I just like them but as I never walk to get my shopping it would be a bit silly as it's never get used. My friend has a nice spotty one!

ouch321 · 13/01/2022 14:44

You could get a wheelable duffel bag instead as a compromise

ShaneTheThird · 13/01/2022 14:45

I'm nearly 30 and borrow my 38 year old sils all the time they are fab for heavy stuff.

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 14:45

I remember wanting to get a 4-wheeler but never managed to. Can't quite remember why.

The 2-wheeler did get a bit hard on my back if it was filled to the brim and very heavy. Because I could store so much in there, I often got carried away with stuffing it till I had to pull. Still worth it.

MatildaTheCat · 13/01/2022 14:46

Years ago suitcases had to be carried. They some bright spark thought of adding wheels and the rest is history. Why should shopping bags be any different. Surely it’s a mugs game carrying heavy groceries when a much easier alternative exists?

PermanentlyDizzy · 13/01/2022 14:46

@Nousernameforme HSD/hEDS here and I’ve always found a well-fitted, decent hiking backpack better for carrying shopping than any bags or trolleys, same for ds who is far worse than me.

I used to walk to the supermarket in the next village and take several folding shopping bags, plus a decent hiking backpack. I would fill the folding shoppers in a logical order for unpacking/putting away, then pop them all in the backpack.

An alternative to a trolley would be a cheap pushchair. I often see people pushing pushchairs without a child in, usually when they are on their way back from nursery drop-off, so no-one would bat an eyelid if you used one to put your shopping in. They have the advantage of being push, rather than pull, so less likely to dislocate elbows, shoulders or wrists.

I have my shopping delivered now, as there’s no way I could carry the amount of food needed to feed three teens and two adults and I have to be home to care for my middle dc anyway. I do miss being able to just go and pick up what we need fresh several times a week instead though.

ittakes2 · 13/01/2022 14:47

I am 51 and got a Spanish one which I love! Its a six wheeler so gleefully wheel it about the shop with one hand while I browse with the other. I do drive but prefer to walk - I have no idea why these are not a thing in England. I did initially get a few stares in the village from people puzzled if I was pushing an odd shaped pram - but I bet I will start seeing more people following my lead soon and I will no longer be eccentric but a trend setter!

misskatamari · 13/01/2022 14:48

Honestly? Fuck embarrassment! With stuff like this, you have a problem, and a solution. So get one which you think is ace and rock that shopping trolley with pride!

My mum had one when I was younger, yes as a teen in the 90s it was a bit embarrassing (we called it her Granny Trolley), but I was a teen and everything was embarrassing. No, as a 38 year old who actually has some common sense and realises that I don't give a shit what people think about me, when it comes to trivial stuff like this - get the trolley. If someone judges you, that says more about them than you

2DogsOnMySofa · 13/01/2022 14:48

If you're too embarrassed for a shopping trolley could you get a pull along suitcase instead. I used to use a small one for all my work stuff, laptop etc as I couldn't carry anything heavy

lovemenomore · 13/01/2022 14:48

I saw one in Primark before Christmas & thought what a fab idea! Go see if they have some?

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2022 14:50

I've got a bright orange one from ikea.

AliceMcK · 13/01/2022 14:50

I use to have one living in London in my late teens early 20s, I used it to take my laundry to the laundromat and do my shopping. I live in a university town now and loads of students use them for their shopping.

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 14:52

I remember using a duffel bag/suitcase a few times but felt awkward having to lay it down to stuff my shopping in like I was packing, and I sometimes was in the way. That's when the idea to buy the upright trolley came to me.

I've used backpacks too but only for a few items and they do affect my back easily if there's anything heavy in them.

Vampirethriller · 13/01/2022 14:52

I have one, I'm 40. Mine is black with owls on and I wouldn't be without it!

Resisterance · 13/01/2022 14:54

I have a beautiful one with red cherries 🍒 on it. I love it and use it all the time. And i drive too but so much easier to walk to the shops with it than drive and park and all the tedium that entails.

I'm 47 and have had mine for 5 years. I plan to always have one. You'd have to prise this one out of my cold dead hands!

chasingrain · 13/01/2022 14:56

@RedCandyApple

I wouldn’t use one, I’m sorry but I would be too embarrassed too, I know I shouldn’t be but round near me they are definitely only used by elderly people, my mum is 60 and even she said she wouldn’t have one, she uses suitcase maybe try that instead?
Wait - what? Your mums take a suitcase shopping as she is too embarrassed to take a shopper? Grin

Is it a suitcase on wheels or one where you have to lug it about?

Wafflesnsniffles · 13/01/2022 14:56

These are expensive but gorgeous.
letsgettrollied.co.uk/

Ive been using a trolley (cheap one) for about 13 years now. Never ever had anyone laugh or say anything except "ooh that looks useful". Seriously not one person has ever said anything mean.
To the person above who said "use a suitcase trolley" - really dont do that. The wheels are teeny tiny, make a ridiculous noise and totally not designed for pavements. Much better to just get a trolley!

Obsidiansphere · 13/01/2022 14:57

I’m on my second one…it has dogs on it…I use it every time I go shopping and give 0 fucks what anyone else thinks!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 13/01/2022 14:58

I've had one since my early 20s when dd1 was in the sling or days she didn't use the buggy so much. I also don't drive so perfect for picnics, beach days or shopping!

I also bought a beach trolley last year, best thing ever! I can take 2 massive bags to the laundrette and at Christmas I didnt even use a shopping trolley in the supermarket just chucked it in mine and unloaded at the checkout!

I'm now 33 and wouldn't be without one. My mum still struggles with shopping bags!

Wafflesnsniffles · 13/01/2022 14:58

I was about 33 when I started using one - when my youngest no longer needed a pushchair. :)

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 14:59

I remember using a duffel bag/suitcase a few times but

Mine were on 2 wheels. Still...a trolley was better and I was the only younger person using it at the time in the town where I lived. Who cares? Convenience trumps all.

PrincessNutella · 13/01/2022 15:00

They are city-chic! For heaven's sake, get one!

nordica · 13/01/2022 15:00

YABU for caring about what anyone else thinks about your choice of shopping bag! Definitely get one.

Jitters22 · 13/01/2022 15:00

I tore the meniscus in my knee and was unable to drive for nearly a year.

I got one of them there shopping trollies you are talking about and I bloody loved it. You've got to get a good sized one though. Mine was like a big canvas box on wheels - see pic.

When I decorated my thirteen year old daughter's bedroom, we caught two buses to B & Q to buy paint and wallpaper, then next door into Wayfair to get curtains, curtain poles etc. All transported home in the shopping trolley on the bus.

Aibu to be too embarrassed to get a shopping trolley.
