To think age 21 is not a 'young mum'?

I fell pregnant with my daughter at 20, had her at 21. I am now referred to by a lot of people as a 'young mum'. I don't feel like 21 to have a child is young at all and 10 years on, I've gotten on with my life very well, just the same as I would have without having my child.

AIBU to think a young mum is someone about 15, 16, 17? Anything above that is normal age to have children?

I was 21 and definitely felt and was treated as a young mum.
Having a child at university when you're not yet 40 is unusual.

But it depends on your social circles and the area you live in. It will be more unusual in some places and less in others.

I'd class anyone who still qualifies for a young persons railcard as a young mum, so 25 and below

CockSpadget · 12/01/2022 21:04

@OddBoots

I mean a judgement in terms of it not being an objective fact, if we asked at what age you stopped being young you would get a range of answers in the same way if you asked what age you become old you would get a range.

Young can also be pejorative and used with mother that is more likely than when it is used in other contexts, people use it to imply a lack of maturity and experience and that's not exactly done as a positive.

I don't think many people would not class 21 as being young.

Teenage mums are teen mums. 20/21/22/23 I’d describe as being young mums. It’s not supposed to be derogatory, it’s just a statement of fact. 21 is young, you’re a mum, young mum.

HNY2022mam · 12/01/2022 21:06

21 was about average when I was born (40 years ago) however times have changed and 21 is young now. However young is not a synonym of bad.

Iamkmackered1979 · 12/01/2022 21:06

I was 22, I’d finished uni had a job 25 with second I did feel young. Younger 2 I had at 31/32 I was still the young mum in the playground where we live. I didn’t care if I’d been judged or not. I was happy and my kids were too. Try not to get to hung up on whatever others think op just live

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/01/2022 21:06

It is young. Late 20s is average.

Obviously in some social groups the average is later still.

I had my first child at 21 and didn’t feel it was particularly young. However, now my son is 18 I feel it was young and would think he was very young if he had a baby at the same age! Nothing wrong with it and no regrets but my perspective has changed.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 12/01/2022 21:08

It definitely is young these days. I was the first out of my friendship group to have kids at 27...

Grantanow · 12/01/2022 21:09

A mum is as young as she feels!

nuggetschicken · 12/01/2022 21:09

It's young. I was 20 and have always felt younger than other mums while we've gone through nursery, school, clubs.

Mumofsend · 12/01/2022 21:09

I had my oldest at 21. Looking back it is very young.

MileyWiley · 12/01/2022 21:09

In my area anyone under 22 gets referred to support services for young mums.

Londoncallingme · 12/01/2022 21:09

I do believe there’s a bit of a North /South divide here - there do seem to be more young mums in the north - perhaps because property is so comparatively cheap?
But N,S,E or W - 21 is a young mum.
My 21yr old is at Uni just about managing to look after herself!

catgirl1976 · 12/01/2022 21:10

21 is a young mum to me. There's nothing wrong with being a young mum. I had my DS at 36. So I was an old mum. Again, nothing wrong with it - it's just a fact. You were below the average age and I was above.

littlepeas · 12/01/2022 21:12

It is young. I had my dc at 26, 27 and 29 and was considered a young mum! There’s nothing wrong with being a young mum - I’m glad I had mine when I did for many reasons.

ElinorOliphant · 12/01/2022 21:13

21years…. Young age

21 year old Mum…. Young Mum

I had my first at 31 and was one of the first in my friendship group so I feel like young 🤣

GizmosEveningBath · 12/01/2022 21:13

I had my first when I had just turned 24. Looking back it does seem very young, I'm in my 30s now and many people I know from school are only just having their first.

It's just a fact, younger than the average age is young. Of course there will be the odd person who judges younger mums, in the same way some women are judged if they have babies in thier 40s, but who cares what they think.

GullyGawk · 12/01/2022 21:13

21 is young. Barely finished school. 15 is a child. I had mine at 27 and I was the first in my circle by far. Had travelled around the world for years, finished university and had a job. Depends on what you want from life I guess. No judgement though.

WonderfulYou · 12/01/2022 21:13

I think nowadays it’s classed as a young mum but 10-20 years ago that would have been quite normal.

I had mine at 18 and I often feel like I wasn’t a ‘young mum’ as like you say that’s 15/16 year olds but it is pretty young.

Misty999 · 12/01/2022 21:14

I was still a child at 21.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/01/2022 21:14

At least its better than been called a geriatric mum

FluffyBooBoo · 12/01/2022 21:14

Definitely young. I think I was a young mum and I had my first at 24.

DappledThings · 12/01/2022 21:15

Definitely young. Not pejorative, just fact. Anything under 26 is young.

Oblomov22 · 12/01/2022 21:15

Of course it's a young mum. Hmm
