To think age 21 is not a 'young mum'?

I fell pregnant with my daughter at 20, had her at 21. I am now referred to by a lot of people as a 'young mum'. I don't feel like 21 to have a child is young at all and 10 years on, I've gotten on with my life very well, just the same as I would have without having my child.

AIBU to think a young mum is someone about 15, 16, 17? Anything above that is normal age to have children?

I think in the 60s and perhaps the 70s it wasn’t considered young but these days it it most certainly is.

ISeeTheLight · 12/01/2022 20:47

I was 27 when I had DD and was considered a very young mum by our GP practice Confused

20-21 is definitely young though.

Wildrobin · 12/01/2022 20:47

It’s unusual it doesn't feel young to you OP as did many of your friends have babies at a similar age I wonder? Mine were all 28+ and it probably varies

PomegranateLindor · 12/01/2022 20:48

I had my first child at 24 and was definitely a young mum!

Figgygal · 12/01/2022 20:48

Really young in my mind

ParkheadParadise · 12/01/2022 20:48

It's old to me 😂😂😂 I had Dd1 @ 15 😉

I do think it's young to have a child. A couple of my nieces and nephews have kids they are mostly 24/25/26. One niece @ 24 has 2 kids.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/01/2022 20:48

I don't think it is necessarily a judgement implying too young if that is what you are inferring, just a factual statement that you are young This!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 12/01/2022 20:49

It is a young mum, you may be a youngish Nan and get to spend many years with your DGC.

amusedbush · 12/01/2022 20:49

19 or under is a teen mum and 20 - 24 is a young mum, in my opinion.

A friend had her son ten years ago at 21 and we were all shocked when she announced her pregnancy, it wasn’t common in my friend circles and seemed very young.

SantaClawsServiette · 12/01/2022 20:49

I wouldn't say it, any more than I would avoid saying someone over 30 is an old mum - despite the fact that when I had my son at 33 I was classed medically as a "geriatric mum."

But for a lot of people what they mean is "younger than average" and these days many people have their kids later. In some circles 31 would be a young mum in that sense. So what seems unusually young will depend on the person.

Biologically 21 is probably the ideal time to be having kids.

HelloDulling · 12/01/2022 20:49

Certainly is to me. A 15/16 year old is a teen mum.

SeeminglyOblivious · 12/01/2022 20:50

Of course you're a young mum at 21 - you're young and a mum.

Siepie · 12/01/2022 20:50

I think anything under about 25 is a "young mum". The average age to have a first child in the UK is 29, so 21 is quite a lot younger than that. That doesn't mean it's a negative thing.

Whether it stands out will depend on your area and social circle, though. In the area where I grew up, a lot of people have a baby in their teens/early 20s. In the area I live now, where uni seems like the norm, I think it would be unusual to have a baby at 21.

RedskyThisNight · 12/01/2022 20:50

Agree it's just factual. These days you have to be in education or training until 18, so falling pregnant at 20 is only a couple of years later.

You seem to be considering it to be an insult though. Why?

jesuistot · 12/01/2022 20:52

It’s young but I don’t think ‘young mum’ is a negative description at all, I think having a baby in your 20s in the perfect time for a lot of people.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 12/01/2022 20:52

Yep, 21 is a young mum.

firstimemamma · 12/01/2022 20:53

Anything under 25 is a young mum. 21 is very young.

NiceTwin · 12/01/2022 20:53

Agree with the majority, 21 is a young mum.
Not sure if it is anything to be offended offended by though?

Hibye23289 · 12/01/2022 20:53

I was 21 when I got pregnant and now 32,looking back I do think it is young but I remember at the time somebody saying I was young and I didn't feel it.

It's young age wise but not in the way of getting pregnant as a teen at school

Hoolihan · 12/01/2022 20:54

I was still at uni at 21! Definitely very young to have baby imo.

CockSpadget · 12/01/2022 20:54

Yes, you were a young mum, I was the same age when I had my first. It's not an insult, it's just fact, 21 is young, have a child you become a mum, ergo, young mum.
I had my other child at 38, so I was then classed an old mum. It is what it is.

Einszwei · 12/01/2022 20:54

21 is young in the social context of the current day.

BurntO · 12/01/2022 20:54

It’s a young mum. Any younger is a teen mum

OddBoots · 12/01/2022 20:55

It's a judgement, as it would be to call someone an old mum, so for that reason I'd not use the term.

IDontKnow00 · 12/01/2022 20:55

You are a young mum at 21. Not sure why that's an issue though? When someone says young mum to me I don't think of a 16 year old.
