AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

@BoredZelda

The Tories will never be "completely unelectable" in Britain as

They are completely unelectable in Scotland and have been for decades. Not since 1959, has Scotland voted Tory.

They were completely unelectable under William Hague and IDS.
Exhausteddog · 11/01/2022 19:29

More than 2 years after he became PM I'm pretty sure there is no link with what Boris Johnson should do (as a moderately decent human being) and what he does do.
There have been ample instances where he may have had reason to resign and he hasn't. I'm pretty sure he hasn't got a conscience so why would this be any different?

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 11/01/2022 19:30

The Tories can't lose the next election, even after all this. All I hope for is that perhaps it will help chip away at their majority more than I thought was possible, and might galvinise the left to work together as needed.

But I am realistic and know what the likelihood of that is.

codexa · 11/01/2022 19:32

The Red Wall might come tumbling down.

Shmithecat2 · 11/01/2022 19:33

YANBU. And I say that as a Tory voter who no longer feels they can vote Tory. Politically homeless now.

sst1234 · 11/01/2022 19:37

Hopefully the 1922 committee is doing what they should have done weeks ago.

They can indeed lose the next election, and on current polling they would.

So long as the Tories lose their overall majority they should be out.

It is a question of targeting and tactical voting.

There are police all over Downing Street all the time; you'd have thought they might've spotted 100 people rocking up with a bring a bottle.

And yes, BJ is a cunt. But he's like shit to a blanket and won't be going anywhere.

Pixxie7 · 11/01/2022 19:42

At the end of the day it’s up to the electorate to vote with there feet, the only way Johnson will go is if the midterm elections show that people are willing to vote labour in. Even some experienced Tories are saying that they had been working extremely hard and needed some let up, apparently it was a error of judgement.

TheMarzipanDildo · 11/01/2022 19:47

How the fuck did they think they’d get away with this? I mean, undoubtedly they will in the long term (electorally speaking), but they must have known that it would come out and they would look like bellends.

Hospedia · 11/01/2022 19:47

I said on another thread that the general public needs to come together in protest, start a general strike (govt have already shown their hand that the UK would grind to a halt - it's why they are shortening the isolation period for covid because public services and some private would grind to a dangerous halt if we stopped working and demanded higher wages) actually DO something for any tangible change to happen or the Tories are just going to keep sucking us dry financially then shitting on us. But there is no backbone in the UK anymore. We are all talk and no action other than write your MP, which has had zero impact though the entire pandemic as it is.

As muchbas I agree, I can understand why people don't. You can't feed your kids principles or use righteous anger to pay your rent.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 11/01/2022 19:49

‘I'm just waiting for the "Corbyn would have been worse" posts.’

‘And the ‘at least he knows what a woman is!’ posts!

Anyway joking aside, I want him to stay. Not because I like him but because there’s two years left of this government and I fear who may take over. Possibly one of the ‘Brittania Unchained’ free market lunatics. Liz ‘we replaced £1bn in EU cheese and wine trade with 2 years of half price cheese from Micronesia, great success!’ Truss?! Or the other long line of MPs who stoke culture wars because it’s easier than representing constituents. No way! They can do a lot of damage in two years. There’s nobody in his current cabinet capable of running this country. There’s nobody even on his back benches who looks capable of any type of reform. They’ve gutted out all of the potential talent.

Be careful what you wish for because the one who comes after him could be even worse.

PerkingFaintly · 11/01/2022 19:50

What will actually happen at the next election is not that the Tories will be punished for Tory behaviour, but that Labour will be.

I've never understood why people fall for this, but the tactic is used regular as clockwork and is very successful.

So when the Tories preside over record unemployment figures, they use election posters saying "Labour isn't working".Confused

When the Tories preside over riots in Brixton & Toxteth and mining areas, they use election posters showing rioters and suggesting a Labour govt will cause this.Confused (Don't remember the slogan but do remember the poster.)

When the Tories have been in government for 15 years, they run adverts in Red Wall Labour seats saying essentially, "Isn't life awful, it's time for change, vote Tory in the General Election."Confused

So I'm sure when the Tories have been having superspreader Covid parties, they will use ads saying something like, "Can't trust politicians or government, chose something new, vote for us!"

And people will.

There might be a bit of rebranding: Nu Tory or something. But pound to a penny come General Election time we'll be hearing that Labour/some leader is unelectable because of... some Tory sin.

Boood · 11/01/2022 19:51

If (when) Johnson eventually goes, the one thing I want to see is a line under Dominic Cummings pulling the strings behind the scenes. He is behind these leaks. And the fact that he was in that position, and still is, bothers me far more than any stupid party. At least Johnson won an election. At least we can vote him out.

AutumnAlmanack · 11/01/2022 19:52

Nope! He is much better than the alternative.

Enzbear · 11/01/2022 19:52

Watching the MPs that lost relatives speak so emotionally today really moved me. So sad and thousands of people with similar stories from back then. BJ must be a total psycho not to feel some shame and he's a complete coward not to answer himself. He should resign but he thinks he is invincible.

User135644 · 11/01/2022 19:54

Why? .You get what you vote for. What exactly did people think they were getting when they voted for the charlatan?

People in England have Stockholm Syndrome for the Tories

Yes it was one of boris people but then what's to be gained by Boris resigning ? The structure and people will still be there , and the corridors of power will still be there, just that we get a new leader, different personality but otherwise how's that different ?
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 11/01/2022 19:55

I don't think so. It will suit them to have Mr Toad in charge for another year or so. Replacing him with Sunak or Truss now gives enough time for them to become really unpopular. Replacing him not long before the next GE will boost them possibly enough to keep Labour out as Tory voters return in relief.
TheMarzipanDildo · 11/01/2022 19:56

That story is very Jeremy Thorpe-esque. You would have though that colluding in plans to have journalists violently attacked would be a bit damning for a politician. But Johnson is Teflon.

StrandedStarfish · 11/01/2022 19:58

I work in a hospital in a department which is at the business end of Covid. Colleagues were offered afternoon tea in a box to thank us for the work we were doing, not a BYOB event to enjoy the lovely weather in the hospital car park.. oh and the afternoon tea had to be eaten off hospital premises.

I have spent the afternoon reflecting on that 13 year old boy who died alone from covid because rules meant his parents could not be with him. I’m also thinking about the staff who cared for that boy and how traumatised they and his family must be.

Boris needs to resign

Clawdy · 11/01/2022 19:58

YANBU. He should go, but I fear he won't.

Roussette · 11/01/2022 19:59

In a way I'd rather he stayed as long as possible, to do as much damage as possible to the Tory party

However, I suspect he'll be ousted soon. This isn't going away like they hoped it would, and the party donors are getting fractious. I reckon they're holding on until spring so they can 'blame' Covid on him and start afresh (they'll hope) with new blood when things look more positive. Fingers crossed for Liz Truss, as she's utterly useless

Brilliant.
^^ This.

I just feel so so sorry for those who'd lost loved ones round that time, and who couldn't grieve properly, no comforting of relatives, cold funerals that just didn't do justice to someone very important in their lives.

Pat123dev · 11/01/2022 20:00

It's all a mess. I thinkg he should go-its just such a moral f##k up. but who runs the country? I think we'd be screwed if it was any of the Tories and their egos or the spineless labours who'll sink us!

I'm politically homeless now. Maybe we should start a 'mothers who'll sort this sh#t show out' party....

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 11/01/2022 20:01

What midterm elections though? We're not in the USA. We'll get the odd by-election and local elections, but they usually have a very low turnout.

And you're right - people should show their disgust at the ballot box, but somehow Ed eating a bacon sarnie is more repellent than toffs garden partying while the ordinary folk were forbidden from seeing their families.
