AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

That story is very Jeremy Thorpe-esque. You would have though that colluding in plans to have journalists violently attacked would be a bit damning for a politician. But Johnson is Teflon.

No one has ever stayed teflon forever. We will see. He is polling badly now. Maybe he can turn it around. I hope not!
SmallPrawnEnergy · 11/01/2022 20:06

The floppy haired bag of rancid cottage cheese fucking smirks when he’s asked about it. Of course he won’t resign. He should be shot with shit in public imo.

t will suit them to have Mr Toad in charge for another year or so. Replacing him with Sunak or Truss now gives enough time for them to become really unpopular.

Agree.

The Tory replacement for the Tory deadhead will be presented as a saviour and the answer to the call for change. It'll be a last-minute thing, to avoid them getting tarnished before the election.

User135644 · 11/01/2022 20:09

@BoredZelda

but the UK itself was far, far better on basically every single metric.

…and then we went in to recession after the largest banking crisis, which if the government had implemented more stringent banking oversight rather than removing regulations, we could have been far more protected from. If they had made some hay whilst the sun was shining rather than just taking the spoils of the boom created by the poor banking practices and spending it, the global recession would not have hit us so hard.

Oh yeah that period when Cameron and Osborne were calling for even more deregulation (just before the crash).

However crap Labour might be you can always rely on the Tories to be worse.

User135644 · 11/01/2022 20:10

Brown actually handled the 2008 crisis well in hindsight (overall) and insulated us as well as he could. Labour made mistakes in the build up but it was a global cras.

AngeloMysterioso · 11/01/2022 20:13

It’s funny (well, it isn’t really) but I commented on almost the exact same thread started for almost the exact same reason a month ago.

To think Boris should be fired/resign over this

He didn’t give a fuck then and he doesn’t now. That guy is going nowhere.

AlternativePerspective · 11/01/2022 20:14

So who do we replace him with? Priti Patel? Be careful what you wish for.

It’s very telling that even labour aren’t calling for his resignation.

Now is the time for labour to start actually doing something, putting together some policies, and making themselves electable. Because right now there is 0 credible opposition which means that Johnson and his ilk will be back in power after the next general election.

tarasmalatarocks · 11/01/2022 20:14

The bloke needs psychiatric treatment— he’s a friggin psychopath and he should take his whole bunch of sycophants in the cabinet with him— they are like the candidates on the apprentice- hobby bullshitters. — but hey more fool the trusting plebs that continue to vote for them, knowing Johnson’s history

Labour won’t be calling for his resignation while they’re leading in the polls...
tarasmalatarocks · 11/01/2022 20:22

You would have thought that telling people a load of shit and lies about Brexit (nothing will change etc, full access to single market etc ) Having the worst covid record in the western world , a mass shortage of people to work in essential services and huge energy issues (combination of no longer being part of EU purchasing power and selling off surplus storage capacity ) would have been enough to get him out , but no it takes something very simple to grasp like boozy social piss ups when everyone else was doing zoom birthdays and waving through windows to elderly relatives etc!

TrishM80 · 11/01/2022 20:23

Perhaps the most damning commentary is the fact that this Reynolds chap felt completely comfortable emailing 100 staff inviting them to a knees up, without a shred of worry as to how it might look. "Boris will be cool with this" was obviously the (correct) assumption.

PickAChew · 11/01/2022 20:24

Be careful what you wish for because the one who comes after him could be even worse.

This is terrifyingly true.

Justjoinedforthis · 11/01/2022 20:26

I think he will resign soon, wasn’t that his plan? He wants a better paying job!
Utter cunt, they’re all laughing at us.

Now I’ve got the horseman of the apocalypse in my head - I just need to assign Cameron and BJ their horses 🤔
BoredZelda · 11/01/2022 20:28

But it was Labour that actually did it.

I disagree. Both Labour and the Tories have presided over monumental fuck ups for decades. Labour brought the country to its knees in the 70s. The the tories came in and fixed it. But after 17 years they brought it to its knees again. Then Labour came in and fixed it but after 13 years, brought it to its knees again. Then the tories came in and fixed it, but after 9 years have brought it to its knees again.

The problem is, we have much longer periods in power than we used to and the good things these parties do to correct a problem swing too far the other way. When you look at the actual data, both parties have a similar effect on the economy.

sst1234 · 11/01/2022 20:29

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

‘I'm just waiting for the "Corbyn would have been worse" posts.’

‘And the ‘at least he knows what a woman is!’ posts!

Anyway joking aside, I want him to stay. Not because I like him but because there’s two years left of this government and I fear who may take over. Possibly one of the ‘Brittania Unchained’ free market lunatics. Liz ‘we replaced £1bn in EU cheese and wine trade with 2 years of half price cheese from Micronesia, great success!’ Truss?! Or the other long line of MPs who stoke culture wars because it’s easier than representing constituents. No way! They can do a lot of damage in two years. There’s nobody in his current cabinet capable of running this country. There’s nobody even on his back benches who looks capable of any type of reform. They’ve gutted out all of the potential talent.

Be careful what you wish for because the one who comes after him could be even worse.

You said it. Corbyn would have been worse and doesn’t know what a woman is. Boris being terrible doesn’t change the fact that labour are worse. Boris is wilfully ignorant of the rules. The Labour Party are haplessly incompetent. It means they could not do better even if they tried.
sst1234 · 11/01/2022 20:32

@AutumnAlmanack

Nope! He is much better than the alternative.
And therein lies the problem. That the alternative is even worse. You couldn’t make it up.
Justjoinedforthis · 11/01/2022 20:36

Corbyn would have been all over responding to CV - massive NHS funding, centralised response, universal income. I’m not blind to his shortcomings, but this ‘incompetence’ line is totally cooked up by the right wing press, he’s far more sensible, professional and experienced than these arseholes

Cornettoninja · 11/01/2022 20:37

I struggled at the last GE because of the notion the alternatives were worse - given everything that’s gone on I’m pretty happy to say with hindsight - probably not actually.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/01/2022 20:39

His and HMQs private audiences will make for cracking episodes of The Crown in 5 years time though....

coffeerevelsrock · 11/01/2022 20:42

I take it you don't follow politics much - Labour have plenty of ideas and policy propositions in place.

DroopyClematis · 11/01/2022 20:42

I've a suspicion that BJ (!) will just hide behind the inquiry by Susan Grey and say that he cannot answer the question.
It was despicable but also rather interesting to see that none of the front bench and most of the back bench if Tories didn't turn up to the House of Commons today.

BJ will just bluster , as always , tomorrow, that's if he turns up.

And he will obfuscate as usual.

I, like pp, remember politicians from the early 70s.
Heath, Wilson, Callaghan, Wilson, Thatcher, Major etc... all lead by example, in the main.
They had integrity and believed in their policies and the direction that they were leading the country in.
BJ just wants the power and doesn't care about what he does to ensure that he stays in power.

I've never known the country feel so decisive as since he came into power. Scotland , Wales and Cornwall want independence.
NI must feel shat upon.
Brexit has further divided us all too, and not in a nice way either.

Dark days ahead, I fear. Especially with a JibbaJabba clown leading us.

Beachbreak2411 · 11/01/2022 20:46

@FinallyHere

Well, it's just another in a long line of 'misdemeanours'.

I never thought he would survive lying to the Queen, then having to admit it was wrong.

Even that is now just one of a very long list

I missed this one.. when did the gobshite do this?? He so needs to go!!
Elodie9 · 11/01/2022 20:46

I don't honestly understand why anyone could vote for any tory now.
