AIBU to think that Boris should resign now?

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 17:45

Today it has been revealed that in May 2020 invitations were emailed to (allegedly) 100 Downing Street staff, for a garden party. This party happened during the first lockdown, when many people could not visit their elderly relatives, even on their death beds, due to the lockdown rules. The email was sent by one of the PM's top people, and stated that people should "bring their own booze and enjoy the sunshine". Today Boris has been conspicuous by his absence.

I think this is the final straw and shows a lack of judgement and absence of moral fibre. Enough is enough - he should resign and if he doesn't do it then his own party should force him to go.

AIBU?

@Howshouldibehave

Completely agree.

He, along with the rest of the Conservative party, are a total embarrassment.

BrambleRoses · 11/01/2022 18:31

While I am not a fan of the conservatives I do think it should be noted that this has been condemned even within Johnson’s own party.

ItchySnoof · 11/01/2022 18:31

The whole fucking party needs to go. Not that I have faith a General Election would do anything. I said on another thread that the general public needs to come together in protest, start a general strike (govt have already shown their hand that the UK would grind to a halt - it's why they are shortening the isolation period for covid because public services and some private would grind to a dangerous halt if we stopped working and demanded higher wages) actually DO something for any tangible change to happen or the Tories are just going to keep sucking us dry financially then shitting on us.

But there is no backbone in the UK anymore. We are all talk and no action other than write your MP, which has had zero impact though the entire pandemic as it is.

So what discipline comes down on senior civil servants who help write the rules and ensure the correct advice is available?

But mostly:
let him who is without sin cast the first stone

Moppiehen · 11/01/2022 18:32

YANBU. My grandfather died of covid in 2020 and we couldn’t be with him. So many families went through similar.

DSGR · 11/01/2022 18:34

@KurtWilde

He should, but he won't. This will get chalked up as one more naughty schoolboy misdemeanour and that'll be that. As always.
This.
Cam77 · 11/01/2022 18:34

@onlychildhamster
Course he'll be gone way before then. And the tabloids who are now ripping into the government will be telling us that the Tory Party deserves more time etc etc

What about focusing on the people that decide the rules?

I have written any laws and then broken them so I think I can cast a few stones thanks.

I agree he should resign though preferably be sacked, and that he should probably face criminal proceedings. None of it will happen though.

Along with most of us I missed out on meetings and connections with family and loved ones, for the sake of keeping others safe. I feel saddened and personally demeaned by the way we are being 'governed'. Heaven knows how the bereaved must feel.

That he failed to deny he was at the party, together with the many witnesses to him being there, make it obvious he WAS there. This is just sickening, he is sticking two fingers up at all of us:

We aren't advocating stoning here or contemplating expelling some poor sinner from our church. We are allowed to expect more from a PM.

SickAndTiredAgain · 11/01/2022 18:35

The public had all sorts of rules to follow, limiting how many could meet up outdoors (rule of 6?),

Actually at the date of the Downing Street party, the rule was that you could meet one person, outside, in a public place. Not even private gardens. We hadn’t even got to the rule of 6 yet.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 11/01/2022 18:35

@rosie1959

I suspect if this is found to be true he will have to resign This Email if it is authentic was leaked now for a reason Boris has become a liability. Who will take over my bets on Rishi Sunak
Rishi seems a reasonable choice, given the lack of strong candidates for the job. I know very little about him, but he seems quite bright and has probably worked very hard to get where he is. The furlough scheme helped many people (me included), and he comes across as being a decent person. We can only hope that he has more integrity than BJ (which would not be a big ask, let's face it).

Rishi got his job because Javid refused to work with Cummings.

GreetingsAndSalutations · 11/01/2022 18:37

He should have resigned ages ago. He won’t as he’s got literally no shame whatsoever and is an all round despicable shit. Who knows when the next general election is but if the Tories win again especially if it’s by a landslide then there’s no fucking hope tbh.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 11/01/2022 18:38

YANBU, he should’ve gone a while ago but instead, he’ll continue to cling on like a stubborn turd in the loo bowl of government.

Cam77 · 11/01/2022 18:38

He should stay and make the Tories completely unelectable.

The Tories will never be "completely unelectable" in Britain as
A) first past the post. So power is achievable by approx just 35% of those vote. Bribing around 1 in 5 adults with tax cuts etc will always be doable.
B) they have 80% of the media in their pockets, pushing the angles they want pushed and ignoring the bad stuff. even the BBC is now completely cowed by the threat of removing the license fee.

Dillydollydingdong · 11/01/2022 18:39

Bearing in mind Downing Street isn't exactly private, it was obvious the party would be discovered. Surely Boris wouldn't have been stupid enough to think he'd get away with breaking the rules? He must have been under the belief that it was legal, surely? Maybe it was?

rrhuth · 11/01/2022 18:39

@user1471453601

For those commenting on Johnson's smirk yesterday,my daughter introduced me to a term of never heard, Dupers Delight. It's that person to a T.
I have just read up on this for the first time and tell your daughter I think she is right.

How noble and brave of them. The ones that are calling it out publically are lining themselves up for top jobs in a new cabinet, little else.

Seeing it written down like this just brings it home how little they actually cared about their own precious rules.

Someone said on an old thread, if those in power clearly aren't afraid of this virus. you have to ask yourself why they want us to be.

No one could have thought that.

On the bbc news they showed the Downing Street briefing from an hour before the party where a minister (can’t remember who) said “you can meet up with just one other person in a public outdoor area.”

The rules at the time didn’t even allow people to meet one other person in their garden.

I refer you to this: www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jul/14/black-eyes-boris-johnson-plot-attack-reporter-darius-guppy
Cam77 · 11/01/2022 18:42

High time a reporter grew some balls and asked him what the hell he thinks is so amusing all the time. He's an official elected by the public to serve the public, not the Queen of England.

NinaProudman2022 · 11/01/2022 18:43

In May 2020 I couldn’t even sit anywhere near my mother at my fathers funeral never mind comforting one another which had to be socially distant or on the phone. Whilst Bojo and his cronies had a garden party that he’s still chuckling and lying about. Its absolutely shocking and deplorable behaviour from the PM.

Pikaso · 11/01/2022 18:43

I’m a Tory supporter and was a full supporter of Johnson but enough is enough. He needs to go. The whole thing is a circus and if it carries on we run the risk of labour getting back in. Boris should go to save the Conservative party (and because it’s the right thing to do now of course)
