A random conversation I started with DH this morning. He is neither!!!

I think it would depend a little on whether the antivaxxer would prevent my DC being vaccinated. Can that happen?

I’m guessing it’s just the Covid one, anyone who doesn’t want to is labelled an “antivaxxer” 😴

The point of vaccination isn't just to get protection for the individual being vaccinated. It protects the whole community, especially those who have medical reasons for not being able to have the vaccination themselves. If somebody turns down a vaccine because it's vanishingly unlikely to harm them, they are ignoring this other benefit.

SomethingNastyintheBallPool · 11/01/2022 09:12

@Momicrone

Smoking isn't a sign of intelligence
No, but being an anti-vaxxer is a definite sign of stupidity.
Tealightsandd · 11/01/2022 09:12

If you're in a hospital bed as a vulnerable patient, you're not at risk from the smoker in the next bed (whose smoking tax will be contributing towards your treatment).

On a ward with an anti vaxxer on the other hand...

KevinTheKoala · 11/01/2022 09:12

A smoker, me and my partner both smoke - we are well aware of how disgusting a habit it is and how much money we waste unfortunately it's an addiction and not easy to just quit. We are not stupid and we are not inconsiderate, just made some bad choices when we were young which I think is something most people have done even if their bad choices didn't involve cigarettes.

Antivaxxers on the other hand will cling onto conspiracy theories and make up ridiculous lies about how vaccines work/what is in them. They won't change their minds and the Antivaxxers I've known haven't only been against vaccines but also taking medications themselves and giving medications to children. I know a diabetic who won't take medication for it - then complains when she becomes very unwell, and an epileptic who doesn't take medication for it because weed works better - but has multiple seizures a week.I've been told not to give antipyretics to my children when they've had 40 degree temperatures and that the antibiotics were not needed for the severe tonsillitis my 2 year old (at the time) had.

Nidan2Sandan · 11/01/2022 09:13

I couldn't be with a smoker, it's disgusting. Smokers breath is one of the most disgusting things I have ever smelt and I'm not even talking about just after having smoked.

Plus smokers teeth are gross, fingers are gross, everything smells.

So, I guess anti-vaxxer.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 11/01/2022 09:14

A smoker.

My ex is an anti vaxxer- fortunately our DDs are well past vaccination stage and the thought that he could somehow prevent me from protecting them runs my blood cold.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/01/2022 09:15

Smoker

merrymelodies · 11/01/2022 09:15

Neither. Too stressful the one and too smelly the other. And both not caring about their health nor anyone else's.

maddy68 · 11/01/2022 09:15

Definitely an anti vaxer. The Smell of smoke hurts my throat. I can't stand it.

longwayoff · 11/01/2022 09:16

A smoker please, I can send him or her outside, or remove myself, whereas M. AntiVax will spread infection wherever without any consideration for anyone else. Then cry for a doctor and demand NHS treatment when they get Covid.

GreenWhiteViolet · 11/01/2022 09:16

I'd prefer either, or indeed a smoker who had never had a single vaccination, to someone who was nastily judgemental about people whose choices differ from theirs (having a preference about your hypothetical partner's opinions isn't nastily judgemental, name-calling and the like is).

KevinTheKoala · 11/01/2022 09:17

My eldest also caught a mild case of measles when she was younger when she had only had 1 dose of the mmr, I saw how poorly she was with that and I dread to think how bad it might have been if she hadn't been vaccinated at all.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/01/2022 09:17

Plus most smokers want to stop and know it's bad for them but are hampered by addiction.

Anti vaxxers are just utter morons

MintJulia · 11/01/2022 09:18

Smoker if no other choice.

It's hard to respect anyone that daft but smoking is an addiction and I suppose if they got addicted as a teenager, I can empathise with that.

But no smoking in the house or in front of dcs.

CounsellorTroi · 11/01/2022 09:19

Tough one. But smoker I think. Smokers know it’s bad for them and they don’t think the health warnings are all a big lie and a government conspiracy.

Balls2it · 11/01/2022 09:21

What a hateful thread. What has happened to people!

shouldistop · 11/01/2022 09:27

I realise that but I wouldn't count the second as an anti vaxxer so was asking op to clarify
Ohbums · 11/01/2022 09:28

Mine is both Hmm

Ohbums · 11/01/2022 09:29

@Ohbums

Mine is both Hmm
Actually he isn't antivaxx broadly. He supports every other vaccine just not covid.
Casamadrigal · 11/01/2022 09:33

I’d rather be married to either of those than a judgemental intolerant arse who labels anyone questioning the covid vaccine an anti-vaxxer and categorises those who don’t get vaccinated somewhere between murderers and child abusers.

And I am fully vaccinated and find smoking utterly disgusting.

TreeSmuggler · 11/01/2022 09:34

For me it depends what kind of smoker and what kind of antivaxxer. Social smoker, or dedicated chain smoker who smokes inside the house? Vs a total anti vaxxer, or just covid?

I guess the main thing I'd worry about with an antivaxxer is my children, and as the mum I'd be a lot less worried about that than if I was the dad. I'm not sure how their dad would stop me. I have their red books and make all their medical appointments. I've been by myself at all my kids vaccinations and the gp has never asked for their dads permission. Their dad could be not on the scene or dead for all the gp knows.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 11/01/2022 09:35

@PermanentTemporary

Antivaxxer. I own headphones so I could tune the antivaxx bullshit out but I can't think rationally about smoking, my dad smoked and everything weird in my relationship with my dad is symbolised by smoking for me.
Omg me too. Fags were always more important than us which is horrible and l would never marry a smoker . But op to answer your question if it was just covid anti vax l would live with that but all vaccines l would think what a dick!
Hemingwayscatz · 11/01/2022 09:35

Hard one to call. I hate smoking and it obviously has the potential to harm those around you plus it stinks.

The problem with anti-vaxxers is the fact most of them are a bit dim and believe in bonkers conspiracies found on YouTube, many of which are hugely anti-Semitic. They also love to talk about how against vaccines they are so don’t just keep to themselves, they can be totally insufferable.
