Would you rather be married to an anti-vaxxer or a smoker?

A random conversation I started with DH this morning. He is neither!!!

I think it would depend a little on whether the antivaxxer would prevent my DC being vaccinated. Can that happen?

Being an anti-vaxxer doesn't stink per se, so I'd go with that. But probably neither.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 11/01/2022 07:55

I'm a smoker so it wouldn't bother me being married to another smoker. My husband doesn't smoke and we are both triple-jabbed and pro-vaccine.

As to being married to an anti-vaxxer. I'm married to a Brexiteer and, as a Remainer, that's pretty bad! Not sure I could cope with the wilder conspiracy-theorist type of anti-vaxxer.

get headaches at work from smokers smoking on breaks then coming inside with it all over their clothing.

Then we'll have to ban perfume if something giving someone else a headache is a problem. I used to work with someone who stopped the whole office wearing any fragrance. No diagnosed allergy, they just said it gave them headaches.

I get headaches from the smell of fish. Makes me gag too.

Smoking, unlike Covid, is a net economic gain to the economy.

And also smoking, unlike Long Covid, doesn't cause huge numbers of non smokers to become disabled.

On a separate note, lung cancer cases are increasing in never smokers (especially women).

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2022 08:01

Both would be deal breakers for me.

UserBot989 · 11/01/2022 08:02

what a stupid question.

I'd rather be married to somebody who didn't allow themselves to get so polarised.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 11/01/2022 08:08

Smoker. Intelligence is an important thing to me and antivaxxers aren't too smart. It would be a massive turn off.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 11/01/2022 08:08

A smoker. Smokers can stop smoking but an antivaxxer will always be thick.

FlipFlops4Me · 11/01/2022 08:10

Smoker. The anti-vaxxers feel like a bunch of wannabee killers to me - I'm CEV and it's their sort that terrify me when it comes to going to the supermarket etc

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/01/2022 08:12

Smoker as DH and I have separate bedrooms with ensuites anyway.

Momicrone · 11/01/2022 08:14

Smoking isn't a sign of intelligence

NotQuiteUsual · 11/01/2022 08:16

Antivaxxer easily. You can get the kids vaccinated behind their back easily. Smoking is expensive and stinky, there's no hiding from that!

Both are repugnant

Tealightsandd · 11/01/2022 08:17

Also, smokers don't go around in groups aggressively intimidating and harassing non smokers to try to make them become smokers. Meanwhile we have anti vaxxers attacking police at 'protests', sending abuse to scientists and doctors, and harassing and intimidating staff and members of the public at vaccine or test centres.

hangrylady · 11/01/2022 08:21

Smoker. Like a PP said a smoker doesn't preach the benefits of smoking and want everyone to join in. A smoker is someone with a nasty addictive habit. An antivaxxer is a thick fuck.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2022 08:27

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool

A smoker. Smokers can stop smoking but an antivaxxer will always be thick.
Yeah, because smoking is just so intelligent 😂😂

At least an antivaxxer is just "thick", they don't stink as well.

Lubeyboobyalt · 11/01/2022 08:28

Smoker. At least smokers usually eventually want to quit, and mostly understand how horrid it is and how little it makes sense (I'm ten years smoke free)

TheGoogleMum · 11/01/2022 08:29

DH was a smoker when we met but had quit by the toke we were married. I've always hated smoking but anti vaxxers are annoying too I think I'd find that worse

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/01/2022 08:41

Neither.

I couldn’t be with someone who believes anti vax or conspiracy theory nonsense, and smoking stinks so wouldn’t want to be with a smoker either. And both can be harmful to other people not just the person themselves.

RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 08:42

Anti vaxxer. I really dislike smokers.

mylittleyumyum · 11/01/2022 08:44

I don't think either of those criteria are what I'd base a marriage on

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/01/2022 08:47

Neither, but at the point of a gun, I'd choose the smoker, as he could give up, whereas I fear the antivaxxer would never become a sensible, rational person capable of critical thinking. I would go mad in short order living with someone as deluded as that.

Neron · 11/01/2022 08:57

The predictable comments on this thread are classic mumsnet. Smokers being more intelligent? Smokers not harming anyone but themselves? Smokers usually wanting to quit?

RedCandyApple · 11/01/2022 09:00

Don’t forget “Smoker definitely most smokers are considerate so not harming anyone but themselves” 😂😂😂

shouldistop · 11/01/2022 09:04

What do you mean by anti vaxxer? Someone who thinks all vaccinations are poison and would refuse their children life saving vaccines or someone who doesn't want a vaccination for something vanishingly unlikely to harm them?
