To think Molly Mae is getting shit because she’s a woman?

Yes, the comments are ignorant and naive. But I think people are going way too far with the abuse. I’ve seen many posts on social media (mainly from men) complaining about her comments and they have intentionally tagged really unflattering photos of her (like midway through talking) to the post where they go on like she’s the devil incarnate.

Many, many male celebrities have preached the same stuff. I have teen DD’s and DSD’s who all have male celebrities they are fans of and I’ve heard of these celebrities saying the same stuff. That if you work hard and “hustle” you will succeed.

There’s also lots of self-help Instagram accounts that preach the same stuff. These accounts are popular with young lads and are ran by men and seem to be aimed at men. Often they focus on cars and how you can have your dream car just like the guy behind the account if you follow his advice, buy his breathing technique course and work hard bla bla bla. These people don’t seem to get crucified the way Molly Mae has done.

Also a lot of male rappers who are popular these days such as Aitch make it their whole brand to show off about how they are successful because they took a chance and work hard bla bla bla. Aitch is a rapper from a very rough area of Manchester who got a lucky break. Molly Mae is more middle class but she went to a comp school and wasn’t outrageously wealthy. She just wasn’t on the breadline, why should she apologise for that? One of Aitch’s song lyrics is “I’ve got your boyfriend’s monthly wage in my jeans.” (DD loves the song). Nobody has ever come after him for that.

It seems to me that:

A man from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes famous and rich and tries to inspire his fans to work hard and do the same = amazing and down to earth and inspiring

A woman from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes rich and famous and tries to inspire her fans to work hard and do the same = a silly thick little cow who is only good for her looks and should keep her mouth shut and know her place.

I honestly believe if her boyfriend had made the same comments nobody would have batted an eyelid.

Also, it is possible for a women to say something stupid and be called out on it, and for it to have nothing whatsoever to do with her being a woman but rather her ignorance… Not every criticism aimed at a woman is because she’s a woman…

Christmascardsontheshelf · 09/01/2022 10:41

@IHateCoronavirus

She is where she is today because she sold herself out to a society who is entertained by misogyny, not through hard work. To then imply everyone has the same 24 hours (to make money) is utterly disrespectful to the people who are actually working hard for minimum wage, often more then one job, just to cover bills.
Yes this. My DH has to work 60 hour weeks and that doesn't include the 2 or 3 hours a day JUST TO GET THERE and the other 2 or 3 hours TO GET BACK. Fucking hell he works really really hard and we barely see him but he needs to because he has lots of people relying on him. The first 3 years he worked every single penny went to his parents and aunts and uncles who took the absolute piss out of him because he was young enough and naive enough to not understand he didn't owe his parents his almost entire wage.

It makes me so angry.
It reminds me of a girl at college who was a bloody rich brat, worked at her dads friends shop and preached to me and others about how we are lazy because we didn't work. I left my house at 7am to get to college for 9. I left college at 4 and arrived back at 6pm. Homework couldn't be done on route because it was peak time and packed, plus I had to walk 30 mins each way to the stop.
When I got home I had to watch my baby brother and little sister while my mum made dinner and then wash up and tidy the kitchen after while she took them to bed or whatever she was doing. Only then could I start my homework and I was knackered.
I also couldn't do half of the homework because I couldn't afford the textbooks and the library only had a couple of copies that were always out.
I did used to be able to photo copy the pages sometimes but mostly they were out.

Fucking rich people JUST love banging on about poor people. But fucking poor people want to be like rich people.
she was beating on her employees. I saw a video of her in a warehouse saying she couldn't do a 12 hour shift. Infront of a fella who was On a 12 hour shift. Just how can you be so dumb and insensitive saying you couldn't do what that guy has to do infront of him and on camera. Just stupid little rich white girl.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 09/01/2022 10:44

I’ve watched the full video of this as i do watch diary of a ceo

I think she came across very honest, she admitted she has no friends
And all she has in her life is work n boyfriend

I think she was saying it in the hope of inspiring others not to be offensive but it shows how out touch with real life she is
She came across and v unlikeable on love island and she seems to be one of those people not interested in having friends so maybe that’s why she come across badly

Also maybe she felt out of her depth on that diary of a ceo
When you consider others that have been in it and over compensated

But I do think she’s getting more shit for her idiotic comments than a man would have

Quackpot · 09/01/2022 10:52

The issue is more to do the fact that she's creative director for plt and the comments she made were about low level workers from plt

Livpool · 09/01/2022 10:54

@HumunaHey

You bending over backwards to defend the likes of Molly Mae is why many women today turn their back on feminism.

Good on her for getting into the position she's in, but why are you trying so hard to defend her ridiculous attitude and several tone deaf comments? Her being a woman shouldn't protect her from criticism with whatabouttery.

Plus you're comparing apples to oranges when you're specifically talking about hard work and comparing her to Tyson Fury, Tupac and Aitch.

Agree with this
LovelyYellowLabrador · 09/01/2022 10:54

Quack yes, why can’t peopel relaise there’s only so many ceo type jobs
For those jobs to exist there has to be loads of “workers” underneath

What’s so hard for people to understand about that ?

This. The way our society is structured, it can only function ONLY if there are millions of people that don't "work" and "fight" hard enough.
workingtheusername · 09/01/2022 11:01

@bcc89

She said that we all have the same 24 hours in day and that she's "worked hard" 🙄 to get to where she is.

Stupid girl doesn't know what poverty is.

Nothing to do about her being a woman.

True but the point is if a man had said it would they invoke the same reaction
Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 09/01/2022 11:02

A third of the population agree with her in the voting booths, so why the jump on? There are loads of men making money out of life coaching and things like that based on the idea of meritocracy, and yet she gets bullied for the same ideas because she's young and female. I don't agree with her I think her opinion is naïve at best and could be seriously damaging to some of the people who follow her, but she's not done any different than any other woman in that arena.

MaeRainbow · 09/01/2022 11:03

Nothing to do with her being a woman. Everything to do with her being a dick. HTH :)

Pugroll · 09/01/2022 11:04

@burnoutbabe

I have remembered I should follow doctor Alex on Instagram. A love islander who actually is working hard and doing good stuff with his fame.
I mean he's still making money from selling people overpriced tat (bath bombs), he wrote a book when he is not an expert or doesn't even have that much experience as a doctor, he doesn't work as a practicing doctor anymore and shows off his house and stuff. His work putting pressure on the government is admittedly amazing though so fair play to him. But there aren't any influencers in it when there is zero self bendigo.
ohfook · 09/01/2022 11:04

I half agree with you. She's young with not much life experience and is getting grief for saying a stupid thing.

However I wish the people going after her for saying something naïve would use their energy to actually go after the guy who runs plt. He is the real villain here; choosing to pay the major of his workers on shamefully low wages which border on slave Labour, encouraging fast fashion and paying one highly unqualified person £££ to do a role they aren't trained for just because they have some social media clout.

She has been handed that as a marketing ploy and there is no way you can convince me otherwise.

Exactly this. She is making a lot of money at a young age because she is attractive in a way that fits the Love Island aesthetic at the moment and because she has hooked up with a man from a high profile family that has a good publicity angle. That's why she's been given a Creative Directorship as an honorary title. There's no way she actually has the training or experience nor probably even Excel skills to do that job! She's not a CEO and the only thing she has worked hard at is self-promotion. I'm sure she does spend many hours a day applying makeup, trying things in in the mirror, taking photos and posting photos but that's really all there is to it isn't it? To not recognise that or acknowledge it is actually really quite sad as she probably genuinely doesn't realise how fragile her position actually is, long term.

She needs to marry Tommy Fury asap in order to ensure longevity and then she just becomes yet another woman living off her looks and/or a man. Not career tactics that ever seem to last that long or bring that much happiness.

Absolutely agree with this.

Because she filled in an application form, flouted about in a bikini for a bit in the sun then says she worked hard..... Confused

I think she was selected for LI based on the Insta following she already had. In a world where everyone wants to be an 'influencer' it's actually quite difficult to get any sort of following unless you are already famous. You have to have great (I know that subjective word here!) content which does take work to create and a USP which needs a bit of creativity.

Yes, she was able to 'realise her dream' of becoming an influencer even before LI because her parents bankrolled it, but then hoe many parents bankroll university or other training for their kids?

Obviously the PLT stuff came about because of LI but even then she clearly took careful decisions about the opportunities that were coming her way in very small window of time in order to capitalise. She is the most successful Love Islander of them all, probably along with Maura, and she didn't even win.

I'm not saying that what she is doing is in any way worthy or worth the rewards that she gets, but she wasn't born famous and obviously has some personality and acumen to get what she has now got.

Interesting the talk of footballers on this thread. A few years ago they were generally thought of in the public consciousness as lazy, entitled blokes who wouldn't even bother getting out of bed for less than 100 grand and who definitely didn't deserve the monetary rewards they were in receipt of. Now, 'influencers' have come along and made footballers look like they are totally worthy of their salaries and that they 'work really hard' etc. How times changed!

HumunaHey · 09/01/2022 12:39
@bcc89.

She helps my teenage daughter not feel embarrassed by her condition. Initially her doctor laughed at her when she first started having symptoms and said she was too young to have it.

It is enough for me.
There’s endometriosis charities then there are also other ways of representing it. Seeing somebody live a good life and talk about the condition they have and making a teenager suffering greatly with the condition feel less weird and alienated.
Aha, so because she made your daughter feel seen, she should be exempt from any criticism?

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 12:42

Did these opportunities come her way because of her work ethic and decision making or because of her appearance and subsequent social media following? The problem is she doesn't recognise her privilege and seems to think everyone has equal opportunities to make it to the top.

Agree with this. Her sex is irrelevant. I would think her stupid, entitled and totally lacking in understanding and empathy if she were a man.
Omicrone · 09/01/2022 12:50

Well, she is the only Love Islander out what must be nearing 100 UK contestants over the years to have a contract of that nature. And like I said, she wasn't even the winner. And Maura Higgins is probably the only other Love Islander with any sort of significant work (big contract with Anne Summers) coming out of it. Even Dani Dyer and Jack didn't manage to capitalise on their success inside the villa particularly well. So I don't think it is a case of 'go on Love Island and sit back and do nothing as the millions come rolling in'.

I do agree with the rest of your post though, she does seem to be pretty blind to her privilege.

Why not? Don’t famous premier league footballers just work a few hours a week but get paid astronomical salaries and are worshipped nationally?

Well, male footballers anyway. But that’s another thread.
Yeah, they just turn up at five to three on a Saturday and knock off at quarter to five. Job done. Slackers.
