LIGHTHEARTED before anyone tells me I must have no real problems!

Q. If someone asked you to pick up Robinsons Apple and Pear squash (fig A) in the shop and the shop didn't have any, which of the second two options photographed would you consider to be the most appropriate and closest alternative?

YABU = Robinsons Apple & Blackcurrant is the closest to the original item requested.

YANBU = Morrisons Apple & Pear is the closest to the item requested.

Thanks 😬

I think they drink sweet tea on Welcome to Plathville too

Harmonypuss · 01/01/2022 23:44

Personally, I'd have done one of 3 things depending on my mood at the time:

  1. Telephoned to ask which the person who asked me to buy it preferred
  2. Bought both and given them the choice when I got back
  3. Just told them they hadn't got what they asked for, hence bought nothing.

I do wonder whether the person doing the OP's shopping simply didn't see the Morrisons branded squash and thought any Robinsons one would suffice or whether there actually wasn't any of it on the shelves. Also, not being sexist here but was it a man doing the shopping? In my experience you have to be explicit when telling them what you want, so if another brand or flavour is acceptable you should say so. The amount of times my OH has come home with things missing from the list because "there were too many brands to choose from and I didn't know which one to get" (despite it being him that actually eats them), got old very quickly, so now I do my own shopping or have to stipulate brand/flavour on the list and which substitute would be acceptable if my first choice is unavailable.

caringcarer · 01/01/2022 23:55

OP, if you were not a brand snob why were you buying Robertson's juice in first place of you would be just as happy with Morrison's juice which is quite a bit cheaper?

TitoMojito · 01/01/2022 23:58

YANBU but I get the feeling that's not the right answer Grin

TitoMojito · 02/01/2022 00:00

And yes, it is definitely diluting juice :) squash is a game where you whack a ball off a wall in a wee room with a glass screen Diluting juice is juice that you dilute. HTH.

notagoodidea · 02/01/2022 00:05

None of them as they all have artificial sweeteners in them

pteradactyl · 02/01/2022 00:36

This is so funny. Surely with any juice request the flavour is always the most important?! Id say "please get me Robinsons apple and pear" because I usually get that brand but if they had none I'd definitely be expecting the same flavour. The logic of getting a different flavour by the same brand just blows my mind tbh haha

ThanksForAllTheFish · 02/01/2022 02:06

The Morrisons one obviously. The other is a different flavour and isn’t even a fruit and barley so not even the same type of drink.

It’s like Fanta vs tango or coke-a-cola. You go for the same flavour and not just the brand.

WrittenInGold · 02/01/2022 02:43

Did you specifically say Robinsons when you made the request? If so, I might see his angle (plus it does also contain apple) even though he is ultimately BU

StrawberryFever · 02/01/2022 04:33

The Morrisons one but do you know if it was actually in stock when he was there buying it?

Also, if they were organised by brand not flavour, it might have been difficult to spot the other apple and pear whereas he probably has identified the most appropriate flavour from a Robinson's section.

Unless he's actually said that he specifically saw have rejected the other apple and pear option yabu

eastegg · 02/01/2022 07:42

@LazyMareofEastown

It was specifically the apple and pear flavour that was desired. I thought this had been made apparent to the askee but evidently not.

He told me that out of ALL the squashes in the supermarket the Apple and Blackcurrant was the closest in flavour to the Apple and Pear requested.

I was in the same supermarket yesterday and saw the own brand SAME BLOODY EXACT FLAVOUR and since than have been trying to figure out his logic. Without success 🤔.

I'm not a brand snob btw so it being Mozzas own brand is no barrier..

But if you’re not a brand snob why specify Robinsons? You’re a bit to blame for that.

But being married to you, knowing you’re not a brand snob, and getting the purple one and saying it was the closest in flavour is foolishness of the highest order. More his fault.

Dontwanttolivewithmylover · 02/01/2022 08:50

The ASKEE? 😂 Wonderful. I love that word and going to use it at every opportunity. Thanks OP.

Dontwanttolivewithmylover · 02/01/2022 08:57

I think the ASKEE 😍 might have mentioned Robinson's as it's a well known brand and comes in bottles as opposed to some juice which comes in cartons and in a different part of a supermarket. If that person asked an employee where Robinson's blah blah juice was to be found, it would lead to the multiple choices from different bottled brands but not the 'from concentrate' carton type in a different part of the store.
That's my take on it anyway. I'd have chosen same contents different bottled brand.

I've hardly ever drunk squash, but the very short period of time I used to, I learned that most brands were very nasty, but Robinson's was OK. So, with no knowledge of Morrison's, I would say I would buy Robinson's in any flavour whatsoever before buying something else. If I couldn't get Robinson's, I'd drink water.

Purplewithred · 02/01/2022 09:10

My brain said Morrisons but my heart said Robinsons - and I voted with my heart.

RandomLondoner · 02/01/2022 09:15

Was the own brand closer on the shelves than the alternative flavour of the specified brand?

You gave him two constraints, brand and flavour, when he unexpectedly had to choose between them he chose the one that was (a) mentioned first in the specification and (b) closer on the shelves. (He probably didn't even see or register the other one.) (Also, as my previous post said, in the specific case of squash, I think brand is more important than flavour.)

It's fairly obvious to me why he went the way he did.

psydrive · 02/01/2022 09:20

I hope you fall down the staircase you old ass bit3ch
wow...
olivehater · 02/01/2022 09:23

I didn’t know that flavour existed. Want it now!

RumJerrySailorRum · 02/01/2022 09:30

My Morrisons are currently only stocking double strength of both Robinson's and own brand (orange and pineapple is my flavour).

DH would have refused to even go for my squash. He now knows not to mess with the specific flavour and to NEVER buy double strength of anything!

He came back with double Apple, for a change he said! I made him drink it all!

plumpuddings · 02/01/2022 10:28

I’d expect DH to call or text me and ask which to get tbh

Slight detail but the two major supermarkets near me are total phone reception black spots. Zero signal. I was wondering if there is a reason why supermarkets are so bad for this, does anyone else have this experience? I find it really annoying if I want to check a recipe online or call home to discuss something to buy.
HaveringWavering · 02/01/2022 11:32

It’s really odd, the minute you step into the car park the signal is perfect.

YoComoManzanas · 02/01/2022 12:07

Neither because both say 'no added sugar' which means it's full of sweetners.
Fresh juice would be better.
