LIGHTHEARTED before anyone tells me I must have no real problems!

Q. If someone asked you to pick up Robinsons Apple and Pear squash (fig A) in the shop and the shop didn't have any, which of the second two options photographed would you consider to be the most appropriate and closest alternative?

YABU = Robinsons Apple & Blackcurrant is the closest to the original item requested.

YANBU = Morrisons Apple & Pear is the closest to the item requested.

Thanks 😬

@Vapeyvapevape

some people call it diluting juice

diluting juice ??? What weirdos call it this ? It’s squash , not juice and definitely not diluting juice .

Diluting juice sounds like something you’d use in a science experiment .

So everyone not from your part of England is a weirdo. Right.
1forAll74 · 01/01/2022 17:45

i wouldn't choose any, I never buy squash at all.

Good for you, have a medal.
Gonnagetgoing · 01/01/2022 18:11

Morrison’s

gertie445 · 01/01/2022 18:17

Honestly it's like wine, she asked for white he bought her red.

We call it juice.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/01/2022 18:18

@PivotPivotPivottt

I’ve never heard “diluting juice” used in England. I think of it as mainly a Scottish and NI term.

I'm Scottish so that will be why. I didn't realise it was unusual to call it diluting juice. Tbf I've never heard anyone call it squash I've only ever read it on here or heard it on TV.

I love all the diluting juice references on this thread. Makes me feel very nostalgic for my Scottish dad.
Wiscowoman87 · 01/01/2022 18:19

Fascinating thread from here in the USA.

At first, I thought, "Who drinks the juice of a squash?? Those eccentric Brits! But I know they do like their veg!"

Learning SO much from you MNetters...

ALongHardWinter · 01/01/2022 18:23

This reminds me of when I read that someone was given a bottle of Fairy lemon washing up liquid as a substitute for a bottle of lemon squash in their online delivery.

Icantremembermyusername · 01/01/2022 18:33

Another Scot! Diluting juice as 'juice' is proper fruit juice and fizzy / ginger are carbonated drinks. Had to get used to cordial / squash and pop when I moved to England.
To answer the original question, I have, in the past, phoned to check as I know my friend is REALLY fussy about her orange squash and only certain brands are acceptable.

CaveMum · 01/01/2022 18:37

@MistyGreenAndBlue

Mine would have asked me. With WhatsApp pics to clarify the situation. That is a well trained man Grin
Mine too! And if I didn’t respond quickly he’d send further messages with increasing numbers of “????” as his panic levels increased Wink
ArabellaScott · 01/01/2022 18:38

They're all bloody ruined since they took the sugar out of them.

HaveringWavering · 01/01/2022 18:45

Who calls it diluting juice? Come on own up.

The whole of Scotland. HTH.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/01/2022 19:13

The whole of Scotland. HTH.

Yep.

Fresh Orange/Apple etc = Fruit Juice
Cola/lemonade etc = Fizzy juice (or Ginger if you are west coast central belt)
Robinsons type concentrate = Diluting juice
Water = Council Juice

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/01/2022 19:28

Obvs it’s the Morrison’s. Very often different brands of the same food are made at the same factory and just have different packaging.

anon666 · 01/01/2022 19:32

Such a classically male/female difference.

No differentiation.

WirKindervomBahnhofZoo · 01/01/2022 20:04

Best thread ever!

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2022 20:12

Bleughhhhh it would be apple and blackcurrant for me as that is "proper squash". The morrosons one is barley water which is proper disgusting...

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2022 20:13

Ewww so was your original (barley water)... sorry..

Is it called cordial in the US or something else? Smile
UsernameInTheTown · 01/01/2022 20:32

Just knew the complainant would be a "he".

fatimashortbread · 01/01/2022 20:33

Clearly it should be the Morrisons apple and pear but it won't be it will be the red Robinson's. It will fail to find favour as it's the wrong colourGrin

Whatamess582 · 01/01/2022 20:38

The Robinsons.

Wiscowoman87 · 01/01/2022 20:50

"Is it called cordial in the US or something else?"

I think of cordials as alcoholic... squashes are not, right?

I think I'd just call it "syrup," like "elderberry syrup" or "apple-pear syrup." ;-)

Cordials and liqueurs (in my mind) are fruity (or nutty or herby), alcoholic mix-ins here in the part of the US where I live (Wisconsin).

We are very enamored of our alcohol around here - beer, craft beer and brandy (brandy old-fashioned, sweet, not sour) are our favs. :-)

LadyCatStark · 01/01/2022 21:02

I’d pick the Morrisons one but DH would pick the Robinson’s one if left to his own devices as he’s a brand snob. In reality, he’d call me. He had to go to the supermarket when I had covid just for bare essentials as we had a Gousto delivery and he called me 4 times 🙈.

Thanks. Squash and Cordial are non alcoholic here yes. Cordial is a sort of posh name for squash.

I copied sweet tea from watching Bringing up Bates Grin So refreshing. I make it using sugar free squash and am slightly addicted to it
