AIBU to want to start my own 'working class Mumsnet'?

I see so many topics and conversations on here that just don't relate to my own life and experiences. Lots of well off women talking about their recent purchases from Boden or Uniqlo or some other place I can't afford to shop. Chat about dinner parties and holidays abroad. I'd like a site for mums and women on lower incomes as this site can leave a lot of us feeling left out of certain conversations.

@SarahJessicaParker1 i didnt realise that

2Gen · 31/12/2021 20:52

@PartyPrawnRingGames

YANBU to start your own site after all MN was started by people who wanted a site to suit them. If you want something smaller and easy to moderate you could start a FB group.
I don't like FB and mainly avoid it and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It'd be better on here because it's such a good site!

It's quite a funny quirk you wouldn't expect! Can't remember how I discovered it

watchingrnfire · 31/12/2021 20:54

Isn't netmums the other one...

2Gen · 31/12/2021 20:57

@LondonQueen

Also didn't realise that working class women can't shop at Boden or host dinner parties? Do you have to specify your income to shop at Boden, I don't remember doing so...
If you're on a low income, you'd be wise not to shop at expensive shops like Boden! Blimey! That's just basic common sense!
2Gen · 31/12/2021 21:00

@Alysskea

YANBU!!! Don't know why this has caused such a stir. You're right that so much of the site is aimed at well off middle class with absolutely no clue.

As making your own site sounds like a whole lot of effort we may need to settle for being more vocal on this version.

OP's suggestion certainly seems to have put a few noses out of joint, hasn't it? Interesting!

@stevalnamechanger I am buying a Gudrun sjoden dress secondhand for £20. Of course there are cheaper options but my point is that I don't get why Boden is considered expensive and the preserve of the middle class when they have so many sales items and very regularly. It's not like Me + Em where the sales dresses are easily £150 or Reiss or Whistles.or Everlane.

SoItWas · 31/12/2021 21:02

Threads were people who aren't managing on £75,000 a year. It's like another planet here sometimes.

SoItWas · 31/12/2021 21:05

*who

Sorry my cleaner is off for new years eve, so I'm having to finish up my chores on my own, for a change.

^I wish.

onlychildhamster · 31/12/2021 21:05

@WhoAre my MIL earns below minimum wage and her house is worth £750k. Having a house worth £600k isn't a sign of wealth, often depends on when you bought it. There are parts of London which were very cheap 10 years ago but now houses are easily 600k and above, but the people who bought them often still earn little. They may leave because it's too tempting not to cash out but many do stay and their house increasing in value does not increase their disposable income. And as it was only 10 years ago, there are women of childbearing age who would be in that position.

SoItWas · 31/12/2021 21:05

*and am thus multitasking as usual, and making soo many typos

But why would someone wait around for the sales of something they can barely afford / not everything goes into sale when they can go to a supermarket clothes section and buy everything at prices that better suit them

I am well off , but haven't come from money and I'm just surprised how ignorant some people here can be to the reality of most of the population !

Sally872 · 31/12/2021 21:06

I agree, many of the problems and advice is ridiculous at times for many reasons but snobbery and poor understanding of the real world for many people are common themes.

Also the amount of threads about class is insane. I never hear anyone talk about class in real life, I thought it was frowned upon, it is among my friends anyway.
@FindingMeno my latest Boden dress cost me £37.50 on sale which isn't massively more expensive than Zara or even H & m..tops and t shirts would cost less.
Zara? I wouldn't even bother to set foot through the door! And £37.50 IS too dear for an item of clothing for ourselves some of us, whether you realise it or not!

TonytheDog · 31/12/2021 21:11

I see so many threads where an OP starts a new post and then doesn't return.

Maybe you'd find Mumsnet more suiting to you if you actually engaged in a thread of your very own making?

Class is irrelevant - post your own stuff or join in with threads that pique your interest. It's not all Boden and £1m salaries. It seems you've started a thread (which you havn't returned to) to be divisive and contrary. Inverse snobbery is a thing.

Covidclaire · 31/12/2021 21:12

You're right that so much of the site is aimed at well off middle class with absolutely no clue

And just as much of it is talking about claiming benefits, or not being able to work until you can claim your 30 hours of funded nursery, or how to cut back on spending, or not being able to afford to leave a shitty partner. None of which is relevant to me but I don’t moan about there being loads of chat that I can’t relate to.

Why the obsession with class on here? There are so many life experiences that are a real leveller, I think we can all learn off others who have experienced similar no matter how different their backgrounds might be. Anyone can struggle to get pregnant, or suffer a miscarriage or bereavement, or struggle with relationship issues, or be exhausted from poor sleeping children, or find breastfeeding hard, or not get on with their MIL, or have children with allergies, or any number of the things I see people on here asking for advice or even just a handhold on.

Just don’t read the stuff you’re not interested in!

onlychildhamster · 31/12/2021 21:13

@2Gen I would rather buy 1 dress for £35 than 3 dresses for £10 each that I don't like. I share a cupboard with my DH (but also have underbed storage), I don't have lots of space for clothes that aren't nice! You can buy Boden cheaply on Facebook second hand.

I like Gudrun sjoden which is quite expensive i.e. £74-100 for a dress at RRP but I buy their dresses on sale or more commonly second hand. My MIL who is on below minimum wage also buys their clothes (and she is very thrifty generally, she raised 4 kids and owns her house in London and has never been in debt). She just buys on sale and I think she used to shop at an outlet store plus she wears her clothes until they become threadbare..

Sorry but it's still a sign of wealth, if your net worth is over half a million pounds! Minimum wage job or not.

No judgement from me, I would stay in the house too.
I think the housing market it totally bonkers; houses where I live have doubled, even trebled in value in the last 10 or 15 years and made some of my neighbours into millionaires.

elbea · 31/12/2021 21:13

@ssd besides the point but boden doesn’t sell women’s dresses with dogs on, maybe frugi?

We don’t have a huge income but I buy boden clothes in the sale for my daughter, you can sell them on for basically what you paid for them.

ssd · 31/12/2021 21:16

Maybe im getting them mixed up with joules. More minging posh women's clothes.

BiscuitLover3678 · 31/12/2021 21:18

I agree it’s a very middle/upper class forum.

Why don’t you just go for a spa weekend?

Why not get a night nanny?

You should just buy somewhere else?

UnlimitedChipsAndSalsa · 31/12/2021 21:18

Oh dear. Some of you sound very stressed. Maybe have your chef make you a cuppa? Or have your maid draw you a nice, warm bath?

Bluebluemoon · 31/12/2021 21:19

Is buying from Boden really considered the epitome of mc-ness nowadays? I haven't bought anything from them in years it's so dowdy. and Uniqlo is really cheap. My poor student ds buys his clothes from Uniqlo!
