I see so many topics and conversations on here that just don't relate to my own life and experiences. Lots of well off women talking about their recent purchases from Boden or Uniqlo or some other place I can't afford to shop. Chat about dinner parties and holidays abroad. I'd like a site for mums and women on lower incomes as this site can leave a lot of us feeling left out of certain conversations.

In some ways this would be a good idea because most of MN literally don’t live in the real world.

I remember one thread about someone struggling and the replies were about getting a cleaner in a few hours a week, or buying a robot cleaner and someone said about asking the nanny to do some cooking, which I found hilarious!

It can be frustrating too as one family were ‘skint’ even though they were on 45k a year (not in London) and someone was in a predicament and they were saying to WFH that day like it’s a completely normal thing to do. And the person who was gifted £400K to buy a house even though they had a house and a holiday home 😰

Sometimes though I enjoy seeing how the other half live and the fact that they can be a SAHM with a husband earning £100K a year - but they are down to earth and think in a similar way as I would do.

I’ve never judged anyone poorer than me but I think I used to subconsciously judge those who are a lot wealthier but I don’t since being on here.

I think the fact that there's a comment about working class women being able to shop at Boden pretty much says it all.....

UserBot99 · 31/12/2021 20:21

I'm nouveau pauvre and a single mother, so my social capital is not high . Can i lurk on yr board?

eagerlywaitingfor · 31/12/2021 20:22

Console yourself with the fact that people like to exaggerate their wealth...

AIWFCisaBathroomBin · 31/12/2021 20:28

Can we have an underclass section aswell?

Am I the only one?

Prison dwelling baby daddies and dodgy hostels.

I'm sure the odd crack pipe user has dipped in and out over the years.

I'm boringly middle class and do enjoy a good robot vac, etc thread but I know what you mean OP. I could post a problem on here and have many empathetic, helpful replies. If I had posted that same problem with slightly poor spelling and grammar/a bit of text speak the outcome would be very different. Also, as alluded to upthread, having worked with many people on very low incomes, £20 is a lot of money so those £35 Uniqlo jeans are out of reach when you can get a pair for £12 in ASDA.

onlychildhamster · 31/12/2021 20:37

@FindingMeno my latest Boden dress cost me £37.50 on sale which isn't massively more expensive than Zara or even H & m..tops and t shirts would cost less.

@LondonQueen

Also didn't realise that working class women can't shop at Boden or host dinner parties? Do you have to specify your income to shop at Boden, I don't remember doing so...
Do you seriously not realise it's expensive? I earn £38k and could afford the odd bit from there but not all my family's clothes - as in actually couldn't pay the bills if I had to spend that amount on clothes.

Very much this.

And the posters sneeringly replying ‘off you go to Netmums, hun x’ just reinforce it.

And the people replying ‘take in ironing’ or recommending matched betting to women who have literally nothing.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 31/12/2021 20:42

N...mums or babycentre I think have a less middle class vibe.

I like it here though. Doesn't especially bother me that people have a lot more than I do on here, unless they're being rude about it, or worse, judgemental towards people who have less. Annoying

AlDanvers · 31/12/2021 20:42

Tbh I don't get this.

I grew up working class. In the time I have been on MN I was married to a middle class man and had kids and a fairly normal life.

Became a single parent earning 25k now with a man who works in a warehouse but earn alot more than I did and still live in the 3 bed terrace I bought as a single parent.

Don't shop in boden or uniqlo etc.

At no point have I ever felt that there wasn't plenty on MN to relate to.

I don't go on the threads that don't relate to me. No holidays to the Maldives etc.

There's loads of threads about 'non middle class' life style.

@CheshireCats

Interesting name 🤔
I think @shoplifteroftheworld might be a Smiths fan rather than a genuine shoplifter.

I know what you mean OP. We're a low income family too and t'is far from Boden, dinner parties and holidays abroad I was reared, lol! And despite having a few holidays when I was working and before I became a mother, I'm even further from all that now! More like clothes from Lidl, the occasional take-away from the chipper ( a REAL treat!) and lucky to get a day-trip out! You could start a sub-group I suppose, like the CraicNet for Irish mothers. Why not?
ssd · 31/12/2021 20:45

Why dont people write netmums instead of N mums or similar? Is it like when they don't write daily mail, calling it daily fail or something equally hilarious?

GoodnightGrandma · 31/12/2021 20:46

I just don’t get this talk of class. I really don’t think about it.

@ssd

It used to be that your post was automatically deleted when you mentioned certain websites.

Eg that other site we weren't allowed to talk about - I'll try it in a minute and you'll see a deleted post to show you

You can buy dresses in Asda for £8-20

I'm gobsmacked by the level of ignorance here ... !

@WorraLiberty Did you mean to put this thread in Site stuff OP? YANBU to want to start your own forum, afterall Justine did.

Boden's minging. I mean come on, grown women shouldn't be wearing stuff with dogs or bees on it. Its not a good look. Or lots of colourful stripes. Its like posh women on steriods.

So that's why I didn't write the full name of Netmums - in case it was forbidden!

I see it isn't though (assuming this posts)

GoodnightGrandma · 31/12/2021 20:51

Mention the Radfords and this thread will disappear faster than a box of LFT’s in a chemist 🤣🤣🤣
