First World problem I know but I'm nearly 30 with kids but look 17 no matter what I do, hair makeup etc.

Went for covid booster a few days ago and they asked my DOB then went "How old are you can I ask?" so I assume they were checking I was 18 plus despite the obvious 1900s birth date.

Anyways I feel like I'll never be taken seriously by other adults and I'm spoken down to a lot.

Anyone else relate?
Happy new year BTW x

I get it a lot and now I'm mid 30's I think it's hilarious. It doesn't bother me nothing ever offensive is said. I'm also small and petite which makes me look younger I think.

When I went for my recent booster she asked me if I was under 18 😂 I said sorry? In my head I'm thinking she didn't just ask me that did she. She said it again and I kinda laughed and said no.

New guy at work asked if it was my first job since graduating. That actually was a bit embarrassing as everyone around me was laughing, it was a bit awkward!

Happened to my sister when her son broke his arm. They thought she was his big sister and his Gran was his mum. Mum frequently gets mistaken for his mum even now. She looks great for age though so maybe it's in the genes 🤞🏻

Starcup · 01/01/2022 00:46

I got asked for ID buying alcoholic ginger beer at 34!!! I was over the fucking moon 🌝

boogiewithasuitcase · 01/01/2022 00:56

I get this too. Going to yoga classes helped me actually.

As my posture and balance improved I seemed to develop more 'presence'.

I have since noticed that it is when I am scurrying around anxiously that I am more likely to be mistaken at first glance for an unfashionably dressed young person. I'm in my 50s Hmm

Unfortunately, people can make lazy assumptions as in short height + slim build + round face + skinny jeans/ponytail = teenager or student.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2022 00:58

@OchonAgusOchonOh yes, I will ask him. I wouldn't want to upset or annoy him. Thank you, you've made me think Flowers

@Butchyrestingface

The odd thing is that I never meet anyone in real life who looks half their age. Only on MN

How do you know you haven't? You might be interacting with people on a passing basis that look significantly younger w/o discussions about their age coming into it.

People I come into contact with, at work or socially, seem to assume I'm in my early to mid twenties. I don't usually correct them because I can't be arsed dealing with the comments that experience has taught me are likely to follow.

I work in a field where I meet a very large number of people who arrive with their DOB details written on their file.

Have never once met someone 30 who looked 17 someone 40 who looked early 20s, or someone 56 who looked like they couldn’t possibly have a 23 year old child. Not once. In 15 years. Thousands of people. Not. Once.

It’s also only on MN that I’ve come across people who have ‘no wrinkles’ at 40+.

CircleofWillis · 01/01/2022 09:05

Are you just ignoring people who are not white? My family are mainly black and you would have to use a magnifying glass to find a wrinkle even on my 82 year old mother. Most of my black family and friends are wrinkle free at over 40 and look much much younger.

At nearly 50 I still look far younger than my age and it has been a huge detriment to my romantic relationships and professional career throughout my life.

ineedsun · 01/01/2022 09:08

Pretty sure that’s called confirmation bias

coochyboochy · 01/01/2022 09:10

A lot of under 30s and 35s still look really baby faced. I looked 18 until I was 33/34. In truth, you are still really young and if you don't know someone it's hard to tell if someone is a teen or early 30 something. I think it's only during their 30s that a lot of people really start to look older.

Is that directed at MissTrip or me?

Is the above ⬆️ directed at misstrip or me!

Sorry - I quoted myself by mistake earlier.

Do you mean my comment? It was directed at @MissTrip82

The psychological process of only noticing things which confirm your pre-existing core beliefs and disregarding anything else.

I thought so! I think that my comment is the exact equivalent of seeing the first black swan. 😁
ineedsun · 01/01/2022 09:30

👌 brilliant analogy (which I may pinch in future!)

MaryBeardsShoes · 01/01/2022 09:31

YANBU OP the only good thing is it helps to weed out the tossers early on (those people who look for any excuse to talk down to others).

BigYellowHat · 01/01/2022 09:34

I get this a lot. I’m 38 but whenever I tell people this they look shocked and tell me that they thought I was no older than 25-27. In fact, about 4 years ago I was asked for ID to buy a lottery ticket. It’s also only been about 5 years since I stopped regularly being asked for ID to buy alcohol 🤔 I’m also only 5 foot which seriously doesn’t help. People think it’s a blessing but I really don’t see it like that.

Maireas · 01/01/2022 09:43

This has been a revelation to me - so many people looking decades younger and that it is negative and detrimental.
I feel as if we worship the cult of youth and non ageing, there's been a massive upsurge in consumption of botox and the like, anti ageing products sell well. Also, there's ageism in society and on these threads (especially Style and Beauty). You'd think looking youthful would be an asset, not something for which people are abused and vilified.

EnglishMuffins · 01/01/2022 09:48

YANBU OP, I’m mid 30s and I don’t think I’ve ever bought alcohol without being asked for ID. I have handed in forms and been asked if “my mum has signed them” and people have knocked the door (window salesmen etc) and asked “is your mum in darling?”
It’s very annoying. I tried to buy a bottle of wine on the way to a dinner party once and had forgotten my ID and was refused . Humiliating.
I’m sure when I’m with my eldest DC people think it’s a sibling.

FruitMelange · 01/01/2022 09:49

It gets embarrassing when my friends are offered the wine list and I'm given an activity sheet and crayons
We were charged for a child's meal in pizza hut once when my daughter was 18. I think the cut off age was 12. She looks 18 now she's 30. Just.

FruitMelange · 01/01/2022 09:51

I've been called a slag and spat at because people assumed I had my son as a very young teenager

That's pretty extreme.

middleager · 01/01/2022 09:54

@Mylifefeelslikeadream

Even now at the age of fifty a lot of people think I'm at least 5-8 years younger, I don't have many lines and have only just started getting a few gray hairs, my df at 78 still has grey hair and looks more like mid sixties.
Same here at 48 - only I do have a full head of white/silver hair.
VashtaNerada · 01/01/2022 10:01

This happens to me sometimes but now I’m in my forties I quite like it! Someone recently rang our doorbell and asked if there was an adult home Grin

Hibye23289 · 01/01/2022 10:11

Well I got asked for id yesterday and I'm nearly 33! Annoys me when the cashier is younger than me!

I got ID'd in a student bar with a 'think 21' policy when I was 40. I don't get annoyed so much about being ID'd for alcohol because the individual consequences for low waged employees who serve alcohol to minors are draconian. In their position, I think I'd probably ID everyone I thought was under 50.

I believe some parts of the US has a Challenge 40 policy. Or maybe even a Challenge Everyone policy, not sure.

CoalCraft · 01/01/2022 10:22

I was refused matches (minimum age 16) by Tesco because I didn't have my ID, I was 27 with a trolley full of nappies and cat food Grin

I wouldn't say it really negatively affects my life though.

UserBot99 · 01/01/2022 10:32

I get the ''you don't look 50!'' comments from people at work but I'm not vain enough to believe them. These same people all forget to ask to me to the pub, even though they're perfectly nice to me at work, so it's obvious that they know that I'm older. When my daughter got in to college there was some fake polite ''oh you have an 18 year old!'' but honestly I had her at 32 so I just felt embarrassed, I thought, really, we're doing this ''you started young!'' stuff when I had her at thirty twooooooo

But. to anybody who genuinely does look years younger than they are, there are worse problems.
