SIL gone to panto when waiting for PCR result - oh yes she did!

anotherannoyngSIL · 30/12/2021 14:47

Name changed as I’ve been slated on here before for not allowing my SIL to do as she pleases.

Today I thought we’d made a positive turn as she has taken my older son and hers to the pantomime as I’ve got a broken leg (though she has made a big thing about helping out).

Unfortunately she’s just text me to say “BTW I’ve had a positive lateral and waiting on my PCR but decided to take the boys anyway as xxx (her son) was looking forward to it, I’m sure that’s fine”.

In which universe is that fine?? She’s risking not just my son, but the others she’s gone with and the whole audience!! She is very jealous if people do social things without her but surely there comes a time when sense is more important than FOMO?? I’m assuming she waited till she was there to tell me so I couldn’t do anything.

Husband says I’m being unreasonable for being annoyed as the rules aren’t clear cut and she hasn’t had the PCR test back.

AIBU for wanting to ban her as she’s so irresponsible and only really cares about herself?

I don’t really understand why she bothered to lateral flow if she’s going to ignore the rules for it it’s positive.

And I really don’t understand why she’d text you to say she’s positive lft and awaiting pcr if she’s going anyway.

If you’re going to ignore the rules at least do it properly, don’t test and don’t tell people!

CovidForChristmas · 30/12/2021 15:28

I agree with those saying based on the numbers there are probably people with covid in the audience already.

Doesn’t make her less of a twat though.

It’s the direct exposure to your child that would bother me. If they test positive they’ll miss the first week back at school/nursery and someone will have to stay at home with them. For 7 to 10 days!

Chloemol · 30/12/2021 15:29

Tell you husband he’s a twat

The rules are extremely clear show him this link

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/test-results/positive-test-result/

She clearly should be isolating, what a selfish selfish person

I would be calling the theatre and telling them to send her home

PurpleDaisies · 30/12/2021 15:29

@thegreenlight

This is exactly what has been happening in primary schools - positive LF, send them into school while they wait for results PCR. If you follow the files to the letter, rather than using common sense then this is what you do. I despair too!
Are you saying the rules tell you you don’t have isolate until you get a positive pcr following a positive lft? That’s incorrect.

Do you mean contacts who did a pcr and didn’t have to isolate unless positive?

Poor theatre staff and audience. Theatres are trying so hard to keep everyone safe. Pity they can’t have an idiot detector at the door. If she has symptoms, she’s going to spoil the enjoyment of everyone around her too.

I just can’t get excited about this any more.

If it’s as rife as the headlines are screaming about then what’s even the point 🤷🏻‍♀️

The point is that hospitals in England are now on a ‘war footing’ and creating extra space to deal with the surge in cases. What this means is that staff from other services will need to be redeployed to staff them. It has to be that the most urgent and life threatening cases are looked after first. Other, less urgent things will have to wait. That effects US ALL.

It also means that more essential workers are off sick at the same time which impacts on US ALL.

Every one person going about spreading it infects several others. Each will need to test and isolate at the very least. Many will lose money. Many will have caring duties and jobs that can’t be done. Some will spread it further creating even more of the same. Etc. Etc. Etc. It’s not fucking rocket science!!

Boris is refusing to put in measures and asking everyone to be ‘cautious’. Well that’s what we need to be or we will need legal requirements. The attitude above is exactly why the ‘trust the public’ approach doesn’t bloody work!

BonnesVacances · 30/12/2021 15:32

And this is why our family with CEV DD is still essentially living in the lockdown that most other people are finding insupportable. People like OP's SIL who think it's completely reasonable to go to the theatre after a positive LFT and thus making it impossible for vulnerable people to be able to get on with their lives.

rainbowstardrops · 30/12/2021 15:32

@Wizzbangfizz

Frankly, it's so contagious that if you don't want to catch it then don't go anywhere. Mind you, I've always felt that the onus should be on those not wanting to catch it to stay home, rather than others having to curtail their freedom in case someone catches it.

Agreed @DappledOliveGroves

I don't want to catch it. I have asthma, high blood pressure and other ailments. I don't fancy taking the chance of getting it from selfish pricks when I try to be as careful as I can.
Unfortunately, I work in a primary school. Shall I just ring my head teacher and tell them I won't be in for the foreseeable?
Nah, I can't. I just have to let the kids of the selfish pricks cough and sneeze all over me with next to no ventilation, just like the people at that pantomime.
Honestly, I'm disgusted that I have to walk amongst these selfish idiots.

WallaceinAnderland · 30/12/2021 15:33

The virus must be rubbing it's hands in glee. What a plonker!

TatianaBis · 30/12/2021 15:34

Why are you waiting until she drops him off, I’d just demand she brings him back now. I wouldn’t want to be party to be her spreading infection at a venue. There may well be elderly people there.

Millionairesshortbreadshort · 30/12/2021 15:34

JudgeRindersMinder

Don’t you think more people getting infected is going to put the country on ‘standstill’ but in a worse way? The priority has to be life - health - leisure. Going to the theatre is not a human need nor a human right. The OPs sister had behaved in a massively selfish way.

hedgehogger1 · 30/12/2021 15:35

If you've got it you stay in for 10 days, a lot more reasonable than expecting vulnerable folk to stay in for the rest of the bloody pandemic. Some people are just beyond selfish.

Chloemol · 30/12/2021 15:36

@Marianne1234

I just can’t get excited about this any more.

If it’s as rife as the headlines are screaming about then what’s even the point 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well that’s all right then, let’s just stop all regulations let everyone get it

Don’t then come moaning on here when you can’t buy anything as frontline staff, and delivery drivers are off sick, or emergency services are unavailable, or schools are closing as there are no teachers

Yes it’s rife, but because lots follow rules the cases are very high, but not as high as they could be

Hopefully we will start to see cases drop, as South Africa has done, although their demographic PCs are different and it’s summer there which may help.

Until then let’s all just do as we are asked, because for lots, as evidenced by hospital cases it’s not a ‘cold’ but a severe illness, and for some they may recover but suffer long covid

In this case the SIL to so selfish I simply would not have anything to do with her again

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 30/12/2021 15:38

Positive LF?

Tell her to stick him in a cab home now. Stupid woman!

Millionairesshortbreadshort · 30/12/2021 15:39

So sorry to hear this. It’s so awful that people think their right to socialise trumps other people health and the ability of the healthcare system to take care of us. It’s truly selfish.

If it helps, I would say that 95% of the people we mix with wouldn’t dream of doing this. Mostly we are being really careful. Would NEVER mix following a positive LFT!

I really hope that this wave is the last major one. If we can flatten it out enough we may be through the very worst of it and you can have your life back to normal. FlowersCakeBrew

CaptainHammer · 30/12/2021 15:40

In what way are the rules not clear cut?! She’s had a positive LFT she has to wait for her PCR test before going out

She’s a selfish idiot

RonaLisa · 30/12/2021 15:44

OP, how many vulnerable people do you think are going to be going to packed theatres at the moment?

As for "she's putting the whole audience at risk": Oh no she isn't. Most of them will either have had Covid, or will have been vaccinated, or aren't fussed if they catch it because they're so sick of having their lives put on hold.

Otherwise, she's probably a dick.

@Mulhollandmagoo I don't even get SSP if I'm off work, but I still think we need to live with risk, and I'm not in favour of isolating at all for 'normal' things (though I would never have gone to visit my elderly relative with cancer with any kind of cough or cold, never mind Covid: Covid isn't so special that it's the only reason to keep away from vulnerable people).

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 30/12/2021 15:45

There's no reasoning with stupid.

We are all fed up with covid, I'm isolating at the moment, but there is no way I would go out and knowingly infection someone else just because I didn't want to miss out on a social event over Christmas.

Scrooge89 · 30/12/2021 15:46

Call her out - which panto and where? People are entitled to know.

PS what a fucking dick your SIL is.

girlmom21 · 30/12/2021 15:46

Your husband is a twat too.

The rules are clear. If you have symptoms, get a PCR and don't leave the house until you get a negative test result or have isolated for 10 days from the first symptom.

It's been exactly the same for the last two years.

Stormbraver99 · 30/12/2021 15:48

That's so selfish.
All the people she could have infected!
It makes me wonder how many more people do this, but hopefully it's only a small percentage who are that selfish.

greenlynx · 30/12/2021 15:49

It’s so selfish and irresponsible. And yes, people like her make this harder and longer for the rest of us. It wasn’t a question of life and death, people missed panto even before Covid.
And she should told you before the visit so you could decide what to do yourself.

anotherannoyngSIL · 30/12/2021 15:49

@RonaLisa it was a pantomime so I'm assuming a majority of the audience are unvaccinated primary and junior age children... even if it's mild it will spread to their schools and social groups

@bonnesvacances

Same here. Wont be able to send any of the children back to school in january due to cases.
Last yr when we kept them off i was accused of wrapping them in cotton wool and the poor children not being able to do things but people dont seem to realise not following the rules is exactly why CEV families have to do even less to stay safe

SilverGlitterBaubles · 30/12/2021 15:51

Why even bother with testing if you are not going to comply with any guidance
