This morning around 9am when I got to my car it had a soked note on the windscreen basically accusing us of intimidating someone's wife Confused

Nothing else, no idea who it is meant to be from, it's put me on edge all day even though I know I've not done anything, I barely see anyone in the street let alone speak to them!

AIBU....don't leave notes on people's cars

No, you didn't need to quote the entire post.

I have read the entire thread - and I am also fully aware of the "see all" facility.

Tue 28-Dec-21 17:04:12 Bumpers are basically touching at both the front and back of my car, they have used 2 cars

I am not psychic and didn't know that "basically touching" wasn't supposed to mean anything of the sort.[/quote]
Until you read the post in which it was explained. That post was there when you read the entire thread, so you must have read it.

The malapropism (nearly) makes so much more sense than the idiom, I’m wondering whether it’s the origin of the phrase
Because of the word "boo"?

The OED says:
a. to say boo to a goose: to speak; esp. to speak up for oneself; to take a stand. Only in negative constructions, usually implying shyness or timidity, as he (she, etc.) wouldn't say boo to a goose

The oldest example is from 1588. No mention of anything with "ghost" prior to that.

and also has:
Scottish. to say bo to a person's blanket and variants: to speak up; to challenge a person (cf. to say bo to a goose at Phrases 1); (later) to reproach or criticize a person... Obsolete.

I had a note put on my car once ' do not let this woman drive. She will kill someone' 3 accidents in 3 weeks. This was not true. I had reversed into someone's car one time and they were speeding round the corner. There was no damage. It scared me but nothing else happened.

Looks credible. I’m always sceptical about theories of the origin of idioms, though because

a) I’ve seen so many that were provably erroneous and

b) I was once in a pub with a writer commissioned to write a book on the subject, and we spent an enjoyable couple of hours making them up.

I had a friend at uni who was Scandinavian, and used to say, "Wouldn't say boo to a cow" Grin
