Nephew is dog phobic. Visiting dilemma

I’ve kept this quite vague as my SIL is on here. DB has asked to come and visit us with their children, all three over 6. We don’t live close by, a few hours drive. We have room for them to stay. They have not yet visited our house as we moved during lockdown. Their eldest is 12 and has always been dog phobic (will scream, cry, run away)
Phone call today from DB asking for detailed layout of the house and where the dogs will be as “Billy” won’t be in the same room as a dog. We have two very lazy dogs who sleep for 20+ hours a day. The dogs are not barkers or jumpers.

I have reassured him that neither dog will be wandering around and that they will stay on their respective beds in one room downstairs. The dogs have never been upstairs. Ever.
Brother has said that it’s not enough, that’s it’s nothing personal. He’s just not willing to put Billy under any stress.
I’m not sure if he’s expecting me to shut the dogs outside but if he asked this then my polite response would be oh dear, you have long drive back then.
Should I be more accommodating?

This is very tricky.

My DS although younger is dog phobic but in all honesty I wouldn't be asking to stay knowing that this causes my child to be In distress and cause problems for you

Exactly, which makes you a good and levelled mother.

Anyway who couldn't live this one? Smile

I rent out cuddles for £1 per hour... but you can have an hour free.

I also love cats, gorgeous little balls of happiness they are! cx

If your dog is distressed to the point of losing his voice or refusing to eat/toilet by being in kennels, you need to find a sensible kennels that will work with you and your dog to help it. What on earth will happen if you have an accident and need to be hospitalised or the house gets damaged if the dog is only happy at home with you? Find a kennels that loves dogs and makes it enjoyable. It’s no different than making sure your child can manage at nursery/reception. For me that’s as much part of dog owning as teaching them anything else.

Absolutely no need. I have family that can and will take my beautifully well trained dog. I will never ever put him through kennels

Or just let the dog go to friends that will be happy to look after it? Lots of people manage without kennels!

@BridStar - what an unpleasant individual you sound. How much do you think a therapist would cost?

Offmyfence · 28/12/2021 19:26

@AllThingsServeTheBeam honestly do it! She melts my heart every single day. She was one on Christmas Eve.

She's intelligent, fun, well behaved and bloody loves a cuddle!

We lost our previous dog 18 months before we got her, he was a JR. I said never again, could t deal with losing another dog ever, but she's healed me.

Offmyfence · 28/12/2021 19:27

@AllThingsServeTheBeam as you can see from the photo, she's in the middle of a phantom pregnancy .... bless her.

luckylavender · 28/12/2021 19:29

@ForagingForMullberries - what a ridiculous thing to say about the OP's DB. Based on the information we have, you can't possibly deduce that.

luckylavender · 28/12/2021 19:30

@AllThingsServeTheBeam - to be fair most people who have dogs do have a dog smell.

Oh no poor girl! How is she handling it?

I would love another dog but I am not in the best health currently due to disability. Plus my current dog would really not appreciate it!! He doesn't mind the cats I keep bringing home but another dog would be pushing it 🤣

5zeds · 28/12/2021 19:31

I’d prefer a professional myself, but surely asking friend to have your dog is the same in effect as sending it to kennels in OPs case? I mean apart from the fees, and the fact it might be easier to organise at short notice, it would have helped her nephew.

Offmyfence · 28/12/2021 19:32

@AllThingsServeTheBeam she's the most hormonal dog ever! She's coming out of it, but I won't deny I'm enjoying the extra cuddles she wants

I'm sorry you're not well, I'm sure your pets are a wonderful source of love and companionship for you.

Erm absolutely nothing at all like kennels. You obviously have no idea whatsoever.

They are. Well my dog is. My cats are well.. cats haha they appreciate me for cuddles and food when they deem necessary. But my collie is very understanding.

5zeds · 28/12/2021 19:35

So why not just say that you don’t like kennels but the dog could go and stay with friends? Confused

I did say I didn't like kennels. I wouldnt ask friends or family to have my dog unless it was an emergency like you stated. A visiting relative is not an emergency.
5zeds · 28/12/2021 19:37

You obviously have no idea whatsoever. Grin about what? The kennels you don’t use? Grin
