Why does 'wokeness' annoy people so much?

999 replies

twwindow · 27/12/2021 20:18

Isn't it just trying to make the world a better place but making people feel accepted no matter their race, gender etc?

It seems to wind some people up so bad - and it's usually those that are part of a majority group that gets wound up most by it (usually white/men) - is it because they feel threatened?

Whenever anyone stands up for a cause they are automatically called woke - and it's now as if it's a bad thing.

It's sad, I see people fed up with 'wokeness' as code for 'we can't get away with our racist, sexist BS anymore as people are calling us out'.

"Let me ask you again - if someone says lesbians should sleep with cocks or they're bigots, why should I not call them out on their homophobia?"

Nowt like framing the question so that you can get an intended outcome either way is there?

Furries · 28/12/2021 00:54

@JohnHuffam1812

"But don’t try to gloss over the fact that she has been subjected to a vile campaign of hate."

Which still is not being cancelled.

"Or are you ok with women receiving threats of rape and death? Is that all acceptable because, you know, her books are still for sale."

Strawman fail.

It really is awful when you have to stoop so low in a debate to misrepresent what someone is saying so badly because you can't make your own points effectively enough

“Stoop so low ...”

Bloody hell, I’ve got this far through the thread. And have attempted to garner some new insight from your posts.

I’m going to stoop even lower now, as it’s obvious that you will continue with your tone. Which is, put politely, very dismissive, has a clear agenda and basically shows what an absolute plonker you are.

Sometimes “stooping” is the best option. Saves valuable time and headspace rather than trying to communicate with some of such obviously high intellect and debating skills 🤣

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 00:55

I wouldn't call it jumping to anyone's tune.

I would. How else would one describe falling over themselves to remove an artist due to loud whiny demands on Twitter? That is cancel culture in action.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:55

@Ereshkigalangcleg

That was in reference to another poster.

You did however say you didn't believe a woman who has recieved abuse and threats over her position on the GRA.

It really does show what kind of character you are.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 00:56

Nowt like framing the question so that you can get an intended outcome either way is there?

You can't answer it though, can you?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 00:57

Does it. Oh well, I guess if I gave a fuck for your opinion I'd be really upset!

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:58

@Furries

So you think its ok to totally misrepresent what someone has said in order to dimiss their points? Or to just totally make stuff up?

I'd say that's pretty low.

I asked for someone who had been cancelled, I still haven't been given an example.

What is my clear agenda?

foxgoosefinch · 28/12/2021 00:58

"Let me ask you again - if someone says lesbians should sleep with cocks or they're bigots, why should I not call them out on their homophobia?"

It's framed in the exact terms @NoNotMeNoSiree used in their original post - which specifically referenced calling out people who are spouting racist or homophobic views.

In fact, the idea that lesbians are bigots if they don't want to sleep with cocks is a very widespread one amongst "woke" circles - and recently articulated by Nancy Kelley, chief executive of Stonewall -- an organisation which recently likened lesbians to "sexual racists" if they don't want to sleep with penises.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 00:58

That was in reference to another poster.

Why are you addressing me and then bringing in what other posters say as if it was part of what I said? Disingenuous.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 00:59

I asked for someone who had been cancelled, I still haven't been given an example.

Yes you have. You've made up your own definition of what cancelled means.

SunscreenCentral · 28/12/2021 01:00

@starfro

It's the majority of "wokes" that don't really care about the issues at all, just about shaming people, getting likes on social media and feeling morally superior.

Fixing institutional sexism/racism is really difficult and boring, but calling people names on Twitter and getting them fired from their job is fun, easy and for many celebs and influencers quite profitable.

Agree agree But the transverse is that people who are or would be socially conscious are afraid of saying anything? Well protest and organising is banned so alright then

Yeah -- methinks that sounds quite like what @JohnHuffam1812 said just above: "So you think its ok to totally misrepresent what someone has said in order to dimiss their points? Or to just totally make stuff up?"

Oh whoops! That was them too! Grin

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 01:00

@Ereshkigalangclegres

" Can't answer it though can you"

I don't have to, it wasn't addressed to me to start with. Secondly its a loaded question, with a desired intended answer either way. It also assumes that all people who hold certain beliefs hold others, which is not true.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 01:02

@Ereshkigalangcleg Why are you addressing me and then bringing in what other posters say as if it was part of what I said? Disingenuous."

Not disingenuous at all, a mistake in posting.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 01:02

I think it's you who haven't engaged with my point. You specifically referenced homophobic views.Tell me, do you think telling lesbians they are bigots for not wanting to sleep with penises is homophobic or not?
No, I haven't engaged with your point, because yes, I mentioned racist and homophobic views but you still quoted me and went off on a non answer, something completely unrelated question to something I wasn't even talking about!
Then people wonder why '' woke '' don't engage?!
You start out giving the benefit of the doubt, you see both sides, you engage, not you eventually realise it isn't actually possible with some.
They're too far gone, entrenched in bigoted views to hear anyone else.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 01:03

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Not been given an example of someone who was cancelled at all. Its not me that has applied new meaning.

Apparently being cancelled is just having anyone publically dissent against you, according to the way you and others are applying it.

TurquoiseBaubles · 28/12/2021 01:04

Ok, so let's address the question to you:

If someone says lesbians should sleep with cocks or they're bigots, why should I not call them out on their homophobia?

Can you answer?

Or to put it more simply, do you believe lesbians who won't sleep with transwomen are bigots? Because some of the most "woke" people do.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 01:04

It also assumes that all people who hold certain beliefs hold others, which is not true.
This

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 01:04

don't have to, it wasn't addressed to me to start with.

We all know full well you can't without it either sounding like the homophobic statement it is or alternatively standing up for same sex attraction but denying key precepts of gender identity ideology in an "unwoke" way.

TurquoiseBaubles · 28/12/2021 01:05

It's interesting to see how some posters think that just repeating the same thing over and over makes it true. It's like arguing with a toddler.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/12/2021 01:07

Apparently being cancelled is just having anyone publically dissent against you, according to the way you and others are applying it.

No, I'd say it was a campaign to get people fired, deplatformed or removed from things. And you've been given examples of suchlike.

foxgoosefinch · 28/12/2021 01:08

@NoNotMeNoSiree

You specifically mentioned homophobic views, but then when I ask you a question about an identical situation to the one you described, but where a gay person might want to call out homophobic views, it's suddenly a non answer, and "completely unrelated" to your point....?

I think we can all see who isn't engaging and who is pretending that "woke" views aren't homophobic. Even when they clearly are.

Yet despite your completely refusal to answer the question about what a gay person finds homophobic, even though you brought up homophobia, it's me who has bigoted views?

Yep, you can jog on with your woke homophobia.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 01:08

@Ereshkigalangcleg

You're proving my point. The question was asked with a response for any answer already in mind. In effect the idea of asking that question wasn't to further the debate it was to dismiss any other point I would make.

CallMeNutribullet · 28/12/2021 01:08

@ItsLoisSangersFault

Not even one example? That's a shame.
Things like Hispanic people now being referred to as Latinx, or the introduction of BIPOC to replace people of colour which is being picked up in the UK in spite of us not having an indigenous minority.

Having to talk about Pregnant people and people who menstuate, critical race theory meaning that most people's understanding of what racism actually is has changed. Knowing what a micro aggression is and making sure you aren't inadvertently committing one.

I'm particularly present online and still struggle to up with how things are changing at the moment. There's been a massive shift towards identity politics

I think it’s acceptable to highlight what someone is deliberately choosing to downplay - the attempts to cancel are there. Plain for all to see.

The fact that you choose to downplay those attempts is, quite frankly, gross.

You’re right - she hasn’t been cancelled in the truest sense. But the attempts to do so are continuous. And you are doing every twist and turn possible to refute that. Your agenda is quite clear.
