My in laws came for early lunch at 11:30 and they are still here

AIBU to think it is about time they pushed off?

I've fed them lunch, cheese, cake, mince pies, booze and endless cups of tea. We've 'done' presents. We've had the dull conversations about money (them) and covid (a hoax apparently). I have resisted plunging a knife into one or all of them.

I want a bath and a nice glass of wine and some P&Q. What is the etiquette for getting them gone?

I must admit that I am pretty impressed by how much it is possible to infer from my posts. I see that from them I am rightly the personification of DIL evil. I can only apologise.

And enjoy my bath. And wine.

It is utterly depressing how many of these threads are on mn at the moment. I'm sure it didn't used to be populated by such self centred posters who largely seem to hate others but still hang around a social forum to let us all know that we fall short of whatever expectations they have of others.

It's one day - a few hours. Presumably as you've exchanged gifts it's your Christmas get together. Suck it up for your dh and for the sake of family harmony and have a bit of grace.

DownToTheSleighAgain · 27/12/2021 17:34

@Holly60

Yeah you sound nasty OP and I actually feel sorry for your in-laws. And your husband.
You read me like a book.

As pp said, turn down the heating.

Cornettoninja · 27/12/2021 17:34

My go to is ‘has anyone got room for one last cup of tea/coffee for the road?’.

It’s hospitable but clearly signalling you’ve had enough.

Pottedpalm · 27/12/2021 17:35

@papayaorange

Why do you even bother having them in the first place. Just send them a text saying "Sorry I am a selfish cow who can not be arsed to spend any more than an hour with my husbands parents, so do not come" That should solve the problem. I hope you get the same message when you become someones mother in law. Merry Bloody Christmas!

On the other hand simply don't feel obliged to sit around with them. They are probably sat there thinking why doesn't she bugger off and have a bath or something!

pickingdaisies · 27/12/2021 17:36

Some of these replies! OP how much does your DH do to host his parents? Only it sounds like you've done all the hard work, so no wonder you're feeling on the homicidal side of stabby. And 11.30 is veeerrry early. Go and have your bath (you can claim a headache, or you want to get the smell of cooking out of your hair, just go and do some deep breathing).

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 27/12/2021 17:38

@Tulips21

As above. Leave Dh to deal with. Do maybe say that you have a ' headache and need a nap' to get away though!
Totally agree with this, it also gives your OH a free pass to do the same if/when your parents inflict themselves on him!
DixonD · 27/12/2021 17:39

I despise my in-laws OP.

I still think YABU. And rude.

Maybe they know how much you dislike them, OP, and say stupid things like "covid is a hoax" just to wind you up. Unfortunately for some people me there is a lot of fun to be had in winding up a disagreeable relative.

Biddie191 · 27/12/2021 17:41

Hope you've managed to get to your bath, with a nice stash of chocolates by now xx

DickMabutt73962 · 27/12/2021 17:41

Where I'm from, we believe that getting a broom out and resting it against as wall upside-down will do the trick Grin

Pottedpalm · 27/12/2021 17:42

My lovely daughter in law to be and my son are planning to move out of london and buy a house big enough for us all to stay at Christmas. She can’t wait to host, along with DS, so that they can repay both sets of parents for all the lovely Christmases they have enjoyed.
I feel lucky, but also I knew DS would choose well.

shenanigans5 · 27/12/2021 17:43

Pink felt-tip to a lateral flow test and a few fake coughs would be my approach.
I absolutely love FOH (fuck off home) time when we have guests.

Cherrytart23 · 27/12/2021 17:43

When I see posts like this I always think wonder how you will feel in the future when your own dc have no time for you.
Dh is not weird for liking his parents ffs these people brought him into this world and brought him up and you can't even sit with them for a few hours because it's bath night grow up!

Immunetypegoblin · 27/12/2021 17:47

This is where MN is odd. If you just had random visitors who you wanted to leave because they areived early and are staying late, that would be perfectly reasonable. But because they're your ILs, you're a mean miserable Satan Woman Grin

Ietthemeatcake · 27/12/2021 17:47

We just stop making rounds of tea. My MIL needs a brew every 45 mins at least, so once the brews dry up, they leave.

DownToTheSleighAgain · 27/12/2021 17:51

For the record I am am exemplar DIL.

I still hate their politics/ dodgy views and nothing (not even Mumsnet) will persuade me that that is not ok.

Also they've gone and I'm drinking wine and all is now well with the world.

DiamondBright · 27/12/2021 17:52

The key here is to have discussed this with them beforehand, have you made it clear they were invited just for lunch and not for the day?

My ex Inlaws would have expected to stay for the whole day unless it was made very clear in advance. So they'd be expecting more food later and to be leaving more like 9pm.

I'd only I were also a step parent who had parked badly then I would be MN gold.
