To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

SHES SORTED IT AND NEVER INTEDED FOR PEOPLE TO SAY ITS OKAY TO GO TO THE SHOPS WITH SYMPTOMS, SHE WANTED ANY ADVICE WITH THE SITUATUON SHES FACED WITH. MY LORD PEOPLE READ THE THREAD

Install deliveroo on your phone - in my city I can get sainsburys, aldi, the co-op to deliver within twenty five minutes.

MrsHookey · 20/12/2021 19:42

Also your local pharmacy will have their own delivery service if you need prescriptions or meds. Might be a good idea to make sure you have enough tissues, paracetamol for all ages, and whatever else you might need. I can pay mine over the phone and they deliver.

Dimondsareforever · 20/12/2021 19:50

You shouldn’t go out op. So you are being unreasonable. Unless of course if you are just going to get cheese and wine…. Then that’s fine …

Aullu · 20/12/2021 19:56

Install deliveroo on your phone
OP said she didn't have deliveroo in her opening post.
She also got an Iceland slot now, you don't have to rtft but at least scan all the ops posts people.

18 months into a pandemic isn't exactly short notice though. The stockpiling and shortages we have had over the last year and a half should have been enough of a warning for most people to keep an extra few tins in the house, just in case.

As I have said before, I am a minimum wage supermarket worker so I don't have bags of money to spare at the end of the month, but I can afford to spend an extra £ in my weekly shop to add an extra tin of beans/spaghetti or jar of pasta sauce to my shopping so that I have it in case of isolation/sickness/shortages etc. Nobody has to do a full shop of "emergency supplies" but surely it is just common sense to spend an extra 50p and buy that extra tin of soup ... if we have to go into isolation then it is there, if not then it will still get eaten in the end.

I have just gone to my cupboards and they are at the stage I would normally be planning to go shopping and there is enough tinned soup/beans/rice/pasta/odds and sods of frozen fruit and veg/leftovers and "last bits" of stuff in the fridge to get me through maybe a week, 10 days at a push. Will it be a hugely varied and amazing menu? Definitely not, but it will keep us fed and for a week, as a one off in an emergency, it is enough.

Yes, there will be some people who cannot afford this as they are genuinely below the poverty line, but families at that level of poverty are usually already known to (or can be referred to) welfare support systems - food banks, community kitchens etc - who can provide emergency support if they are suddenly forced to self isolate

I am very fortunate that we do not struggle for money, and therefore had a lot more options when finding myself in this sittuation. I do agree though, there are deffinetely families out there though who won't be able to afford a weeks food shopping, let alone an extra weeks!

I think when considering another lockdown it's sittuations like this that need to be considered. It's how overwhelmed are services are whether it be the NHS or supermarkets!

@Luhou

I think I will have to reach out to a friend, just feel like a complete burden this close to Christmas. Most of my friends are busy working or like us have small children and worried about going to supermarkets because of the rise in cases.

Was told this morning PCR results likely to take at least a few days as such a rise in cases

Would you rather feel like a burden asking fir help or potentially kill people?

What do you mean, it needs to be considered? What do you think should be done differently to account for people who (genuinely, not just don’t want to ask for help) can’t find an alternative to in person food shopping during isolation?
Luhou · 21/12/2021 10:01

@Cocomarine I mean that the sittuation we're in currently....deciding whether or not to go into lockdown. Just saying that all these cases put a strain on a range of services including the likes of supermarkets.

We suddenly all got Covid with little food in the house. Very tricky. I feel for you. Luckily we live in London so I have managed to pay a premium for small deliveries from Tesco’s Whoosh service, Amazon Fresh and Co-op. But I can’t get what I want really and have decided to go for an ethnic banquet type takeaway on Christmas Day instead of trying to get my entire Xmas shop via top up shopping services. Am really annoyed about having to isolate as I don’t feel ill really either. But am stuck indoors until 29th December. :( Best of luck.

cherish123 · 21/12/2021 17:40

You should not go to the ships. However, I get it's hard and you don't want to ask people. Could you go to a drive in? At least there is a screen. Are there any local/village shops who might deliver (even if they don't normally). Worse case scenario, order food on Amazon- pasta, tinned tomatoes etc.

LovelyIssues · 21/12/2021 17:42

You have symptoms and have been in class contact with someone testing positive and you're actually debating whether to go to the shops or not?! Please stay home and don't a d*ck

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/12/2021 17:43

Iceland usually have slots.

browneyes77 · 21/12/2021 17:50

@Luhou

Thanks everyone.

Slot just appeared with Iceland. Problem solved!

Was about to say try Iceland. We always have delivery slots. But can see you’ve already succeeded in getting one from there!
Luhou · 21/12/2021 17:57

Thanks everybody.

Update - managed to also get a Waitrose slot last night with all our favourite foods to be deliveried in time for Christmas

Our PCR tests came back negative!

I got nothing like this!! Live in NI, so possibly different. That would have been great.

AnnieSnap · 21/12/2021 18:04

@Nearlytheretrees

You have symptoms, have been in close contact and want to go out? Yes good idea ruin Christmas for others and out people at risk. Put a plea on social media, call a local taxi firm/corner shop and see if they will do a good delivery
☝️ This! Of course you’re being unreasonable. I’m stunned that you would consider putting others at risk of contracting a life threatening illness from you and horrified that some PP are so blaze about you doing it! FFS!
EmmaWoodhousestreehouse · 21/12/2021 18:04

We’re 18 months down the line and people are still asking this. 🧐

So, if you do not 'struggle for money' and you are aware of the current situation with regard to deliveries to shops/supermarkets etc why on earth do you end up in a situation where 'there is little food in the house' ?? If you say that you have ' more options' than others then why make some emotive post about your 1 year old starving? I think you need to stop being a drama queen and take a course in home economics.
clarehhh · 21/12/2021 18:17

The local council have volunteers who shop for you, ring them.

The OP says 'she doesn't struggle for money' so she could contact a taxi firm who would be happy to do the shopping for her.
Bertiebiscuit · 21/12/2021 18:26

Who are you? Plague Mary the Superspreader?? STAY HOME SELF ISOLATE DUH

Cadc · 21/12/2021 18:29

Try iceland. They normally have next day delivery slots and their fresh stuff is OK too
