To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Luhou · 20/12/2021 10:14

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

@Luhou

Glad you got sorted but also 'please be kind' to people who have to earn their mortgage by serving people who think it's OK to just 'pop to the shop' when they are waiting on a COVID test result,

It's not OK and it's why we're heading into another lockdown.

melj1213 · 20/12/2021 15:00

I would rather sit there eating bowls of rice and porridge for 10 days than go out with symptoms after being a close contact.

Also, the OP doesn't have to necessarily have enough food for a full isolation, she is currently just waiting for her PCR test result. It could come back negative and she can go out tomorrow.

Having a few tins/a couple of frozen pizzas to get you through an initial PCR wait or to tide you over until you can arrange a delivery (whether through a supermarkets delivery system or a local volunteer picking up some shopping and leaving it in the doorstep) for a few days time is an entirely practical habit to get into.

Yes, some people will be living week to week and can't afford to stock up, but for most families, even those of us on minimum wage, adding an extra tin of beans/soup or bag of pasta to their shopping "just in case" every week is not beyond their means.

I have various things lurking in the back of the cupboard that are not what I reach for on a daily basis but, in an emergency, that tin of corned beef that has been there since 2019 and has a BBE date of 2024 is an option.

ChiefStockingStuffer · 20/12/2021 15:09

@RubyJam

Can’t believe the amount of people who would go to the supermarket with a positive test result or waiting on test results with positive people in the house !

It’s so selfish and shows complete disregard for supermarket workers
The shops are so busy this week with people jostling and being really close and leaning over workers as it is.
Remember if you pass it in to enough supermarket workers then shops can potentially close due to staff shortages.

It’s just so disrespectful.

Funny how it still mandatory to go in and TEACH when household members are positive because parents (and mumsnetters) kick off at the very idea of schools having to close due to lack of staffing.

But that's what we've been doing all term, including myself, until I finally tested positive as well. Ditto for all the schools around here ... we can't just not go in, we're not allowed to make that choice if we're not positive ourselves.

Take it up with the government.

@Luhou

Thanks everyone.

Slot just appeared with Iceland. Problem solved!

SHE'S SORTED NOW! Dozy berks, they either don't bother to read the post properly, or are too busy arguing amongst themselves 🙄
succession · 20/12/2021 15:29

I'd go. If I didn't have children I wouldn't.

This isn't the case though, the OP actually had symptoms.

Waiting for the result of contact testing when you have no symptoms is different to getting tested because you have been a contact and you have symptoms

CoffeeMuggins · 20/12/2021 15:33

@FrankGrillosWrist

Oh, are we not allowed to continue interesting discussions just because the OP is sorted and has gone off? I didn't know that. I do so apologise.

I don't think it's okay to "pop in" hence why I took to Mumsnet in a flap looking for solutions to a shitty problem. If I did think it was okay I would have been in the supermarket this morning.

Try a friend, but wouldn't feel too guilty if you can't find anyone. This shit is spreading like wildfire because people don't listen. You aren't the first, you won't be the last.

Hellohah · 20/12/2021 15:36

Haven't read the whole thread, but when I tested positive there was a local group set up and they rang me, asking whether I needed anything (help with shopping, money, medication etc).

I'm in Salford, and it is called Spirit of Salford. Do you have any local Facebook groups where you can ask if there is something similar where you live?

JustALittleHelpPlease · 20/12/2021 15:40

Oh op, please don't add to your stress by taking these responses to heart. It's very clear you were panicking and not planning on commiting mass murder! Glad you're sorted, fingers crossed you and DD can enjoy your Christmas (even frozen pizza can be festive with a bit of music and a sing song) Xmas GrinFlowers

@JustALittleHelpPlease Thank you for your kind words, you're right. We will make the most of it come what may!

Merry Christmas!

I highly doubt it can be spread in the supermarket, especially if OP masks up correctly and sanitises/ keeps distance.

I don’t know what the stats are though? But I thought prolonged contact is how it spreads? Especially if people aren’t masked up?

It is the case in many schools.

'Symptoms' is too loose a term with all the colds and bugs floating around. Without an actual positive test, the pressure exerted by heads to come in is immense.

That’s so unnecessarily judgemental. Can you hand on heart say you’ve got 10 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks at home at all times?[/quote]
Actually, yes.

We are vegetarians and we don't have 'snacks'.

I have beans(dried & tinned) baked, butter, kidney, borlotti,
pinto
grains - quinoa/millet/barley
veg stock
pasta/noodles
tom ketchup/puree
rice
cereals, oatmeal
soya milk -lasts 7/10 days (can be frozen but not very forgiving).
soya mince
soya pieces
I buy veg at the supermarket when it's reduced in price, cut it up, blanche and freeze it in portions.
I have a breadmaker, strong breadflour and yeast so I can bake my own bread and rolls etc
Fruit can be stewed and frozen in portions
We use vegan marg that lasts longer than 'normal' marg.

HTH Smile

Amazon fresh helped us this weekend whilst we waited for PCR. Next day delivery free over £40. Or keep an eye out for when the shops release slots.

That's an idea, we should be drafting in the chickens to pick up the shopping! 🐓😀
alongwayhome · 20/12/2021 18:36

Could you do a click and collect, they are easier to get than delivery slots?

waterrat · 20/12/2021 18:45

Op can I say that despite being busy fir Xmas myself I would be so happy to help q friend in this situation. Or even a neighbour. I did shopping for neighbours I barely knew in lockdown

NightOwl19 · 20/12/2021 18:51

Amazon fresh is your friend here. £40'spend and same day delivery

SofiaMichElf · 20/12/2021 19:04

Are people really not aware that Amazon Fresh is simply not available in a lot of areas???

It's not a case of slots, they just don't operate in all areas - even many big cities.
