To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Luhou · 20/12/2021 10:14

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

@ComDummings

If you need food you need food 🤷🏻‍♀️
There are CEV people working and shopping in supermarkets. Why would anyone risk their lives when there are alternatives? A few phone calls and people would be falling over themselves to help someone in the op's position
NativityDreaming · 20/12/2021 12:57

OP, I was in a similar situation and ended posting on my local FB page. A lovely local teenager works at Asda, she spoke to her manager and they let me do an order with them and it was delivered the same day. Most large grocery stores have community outreach and my delivery was done under that banner.

Franklin12 · 20/12/2021 13:02

There are lots of options but sometimes people just dont think...they want to know whether it is OK to do xxx which is the easiest option for THEM.

There are plenty like that around sadly. No supermarket wants to turn someone away at the time of need. The PR would be awful too. In fact my supermarket popped in a free bottle of wine to someone who was self isolating.

EmbarrassingMama · 20/12/2021 13:06

I’m sure a friend will have an online shop booked that you add to.

MimosaFields · 20/12/2021 13:13

Amazon Fresh works really well. I have covid at the moment and they've delivered my shopping 3 hours after placing the order. It's very impressive

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/12/2021 13:13

@MrsLargeEmbodied i popped in for loo rolls on my way home.
we would all do it,

No the vast majority of people would not!

Jumpingintochristmas · 20/12/2021 13:18

Our local council help in these situations too.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 13:19

tbf, i hadnt actually had a test, but i was on my way home to dd who had positive LFT.
tough times - be kind
and yes, you can be excused for getting a food shop, in these circumstances.
10 days isolation which includes christmas is a rough time op

Nowomenaroundeh · 20/12/2021 13:25

I'm glad you're sorted OP. Happy Christmas

MsAgnesDiPesto · 20/12/2021 13:31

@APurpleSquirrel

Do you have any greengrocers, butchers or farm shops locally who might deliver? Or try FB - we have a local community FB group set up during the pandemic to help people isolating.
This worked for us in lockdown 1 when we couldn’t get delivery slots any other way. Then Iceland had lots of last minute slots. We are rural and don’t get delivery or anything here either, but local places and Iceland came up trumps.

Tbh I really don't think you can be excused. Its horrible to think that people like you would wander into a supermarket right before Christmas with a positive LFT in the household, possibly forcing others into isolation just because you couldn't be bothered to organise a different way of getting loo roll.
Jacketpotato84 · 20/12/2021 13:37

If you were in ops situation and absolutly could not get food in and you had nothing and your 1 year old was starving
Then her options would have been
Takeaway food,
Knocking/ calling put for neighbours help
Calling the local authority for help
Asking the relatives to travel although be it 4 hours
Or failing that actually going out to the shop.
No way would I leave my 1 year old starving in the off change I would infect someone with covid
Children are the priority
Sod off with your selfish comments

Jacketpotato84 · 20/12/2021 13:38

Off chance*
And sod off with your "selfish" comments

RubyJam · 20/12/2021 13:42

Can’t believe the amount of people who would go to the supermarket with a positive test result or waiting on test results with positive people in the house !

It’s so selfish and shows complete disregard for supermarket workers
The shops are so busy this week with people jostling and being really close and leaning over workers as it is.
Remember if you pass it in to enough supermarket workers then shops can potentially close due to staff shortages.

It’s just so disrespectful.

Bananarama21 · 20/12/2021 13:44

Don't be that person to spoil someone's Christmas

CharityDingle · 20/12/2021 13:48

@Luhou

Thanks everybody. Now sorted. Thanks to the most for being so helpful! Wishing everybody a lovely Christmas!
I'm just quoting the OP.

OP is sorted.

Yup, I work in supermarket customer services and if someone called to say they were waiting on a PCR test result but desperately needed some essentials (bread, milk, butter, nappies, loo roll etc) and could not get a delivery slot and had nobody to collect for them, then we would try and help in any way that meant they didn't have to come into the store and put everyone at risk. The fact that they called to try and find a solution to keep everyone safer rather than just coming in to the store would mean I would be more likely to be willing to go out of my way to help, even if it was outside the normal policies.

Even if it was a case of me running round the shop, bagging up their shopping and the customer just driving up to the front of the store where I put the bag in the backseat/boot.

Is it something we could do regularly or for every customer? No, especially not at this time of year, but as a one off in an emergency situation, then we could find a way to make it work.

Lollipop999 · 20/12/2021 13:59

Slots are freeing up at the last minute.

I checked Tesco yesterday and a slot came up for weds and there were a few click and collects.

Fredstheteds · 20/12/2021 14:03

Iceland release daily slots

stingofthebutterfly · 20/12/2021 14:17

I see you've sorted it now, but honestly, I'd have done an lft then gone if it were negative. There's loads of illnesses doing the rounds that are not covid, and lfts are actually fairly accurate if you have symptoms.

I'm sure Mumsnet would shoot me though.

Brieandcamembert · 20/12/2021 14:22

Well now we know why it's spreading so fast.

Tippexy · 20/12/2021 14:23

@OnceuponaRainbow18

Oh sorry I miss read! Ummm tricky!
If by tricky, you mean illegal, then yes.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 14:30

i have never had a positive lft, despite testing twice a week for 6 months.
despite there being covid in the house

in fact plenty of people never ever test

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 14:31

luckily certain mumsnetter arent working in an official capacity tbf Hmm

CoffeeMuggins · 20/12/2021 14:33

@TheOrigRights

WHY don't you have food for a week in your house in case of isolation? With cases as they are it

I will have food for over a week come 3.30pm this afternoon.
I have obviously told Covid this.

Do you really always have food for a week at all times?

I think most of us do. Not "fun" food necessarily but some pasta, rice, porridge oats etc. I would rather sit there eating bowls of rice and porridge for 10 days than go out with symptoms after being a close contact.
