To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

Leftbutcameback · 20/12/2021 11:08

Our local coop does deliveries via deliveroo, and Tesco’s via something called Whoosh

Leftbutcameback · 20/12/2021 11:09

Just seen your update about Iceland - that’s great!

Staryflight445 · 20/12/2021 11:09

‘ WHY don't you have food for a week in your house in case of isolation? With cases as they are it’

Frozen bread, tinned food and uht milk is vile, We like many, eat lots of fresh fruit and veg/ meat.

We wouldn’t cope well on cupboard food.

Jacketpotato84 · 20/12/2021 11:09

Sorry just read you latest comment op, pleased to hear you have got a slot

GreetingsAndSalutations · 20/12/2021 11:11

Do you have Uber eats? They usually do grocery deliveries from places like Sainsburys local/co-op/londis. Not a fantastic variety but better than nothing if you don’t have anyone to pick up stuff for you. You really shouldn’t go to a packed supermarket (or even a non packed one) when you have COVID symptoms.

Luhou · 20/12/2021 11:12

Thanks everybody. Now sorted. Thanks to the most for being so helpful! Wishing everybody a lovely Christmas!

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2021 11:12

I thought in an emergency one could go out for provisions.

1WeekTillChristmas · 20/12/2021 11:13

Are people really still this thick!!!?

No wonder why we are in the situation we are in!

You have people that could help you but if people have said, oh yes, go to the shops, You would of!
4 days before Christmas.
Way to ruin Christmas for others, or hay, even kill someone!

Just because you dont want to ask a friend !!!!!

Lovemusic33 · 20/12/2021 11:14

Get a neighbour or friend to pick you up some food?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 11:15

seems kind of an odd question, inflammatory

Diana8 · 20/12/2021 11:15

Iceland always has slots.
Please don't infect the poor driver. Their Christmas and luxury ranges are wonderful.

girlmom21 · 20/12/2021 11:16

@MrsLargeEmbodied

dont ask on mumsnet!

i popped in for loo rolls on my way home.
we would all do it,

dash in, with mask, small shop

or not!

On your way home from where? Getting tested? No we bloody wouldn't all do it!

Like fuck we would "all do it" Angry

Good to hear you've got it sorted now, OP, and hope that you're better very soon.

BashfulClam · 20/12/2021 11:22

@namechange30455 so because it’s different in your area you think that's the same for everywhere? My husband was advised to take a pcr this week, we tried every supermarket around us for delivery or click and collect and nada! Luckily he’s now certified covid free for now.

melj1213 · 20/12/2021 11:23

@RosesAndHellebores

I thought in an emergency one could go out for provisions.
Waiting a couple of days for a PCR result is not an emergency though.

If the cupboards were literally empty and the OP had absolutely nobody (friend, family, local volunteer, neighbour, delivery service) to go shopping and leave a bag of essentials on the doorstep then that would constitute an emergency.

I work in a supermarket, we are already running on a skeleton staff at the busiest time of year and we are all worried about coming into contact with someone with Covid and ruining our Christmas plans. We can't exactly prevent any contact with the general public so we rely on people doing the right thing and not putting us at risk by coming in when waiting on test results because they have covid symptoms.

@Staryflight445: like I said, not my favourite either, but I’d rather eat ‘vile’ cupboard food than infect someone at the supermarket 🙄

OP: great you got a slot

melj1213 · 20/12/2021 11:29

@Hemingwayscatz

WHY don't you have food for a week in your house in case of isolation?

What a privileged life you must lead if you cannot fathom why anyone doesn’t just have a weeks supply of food in ‘just incase’.

I'm a minimum wage supermarket worker, so not rolling in money, and I've still managed to build up a small supply of tinned foods just in case over the last 18 months.

Nobody is saying you have to have 6 months supply of fresh food food on hand, but a few tins of beans, some soup, pasta and a couple of jars of sauce etc to keep you going for a few days is not beyond most people. Is it the healthiest or most nutritious food available? No, of course not, but it means that there's always something in in case of emergency - like having to wait a few days for a PCR test result.

AD80 · 20/12/2021 11:29

Absolutely not if you have symptoms. Selfish behaviour. I get that you need food but please don't do it.

There's click and collect slots available where I live. That's safer than going into the shop! Or get someone else to pick up a click and collect.

You'll be surprised how many people are willing to help. I don't have many close friends where I live but I posted a status about us all coming down with covid and so many of my neighbours have offered to help. We didn't need the help as had food slots booked but I am so grateful regardless. People are so kind.

Failing that keep checking for slots. They do come up. I cancelled Wednesdays slot this morning because Dp did a click and collect instead - he has finished his isolation now! So people do cancel slots last minute.

1WeekTillChristmas · 20/12/2021 11:30

Wow!!! You are unbelievable
Do not tar everyone with the same brush!!!!

@girlmom21

Tiredalwaystired · 20/12/2021 11:33

Call on friends and neighbours to help. You risk ruining a lot more christmases if you go out. Dont do it.

Staryflight445 · 20/12/2021 11:40

‘ @Staryflight445: like I said, not my favourite either, but I’d rather eat ‘vile’ cupboard food than infect someone at the supermarket 🙄

You really shouldn’t eye roll at other peoples food preferences. Or judge them for not wanting to live like that, covid is hard enough without eating rubbish as well.

Cupboard food has it place, but it’s not a complete diet replacement when you can’t get anything else. I also never said I’d go to a supermarket whilst COVID positive.

CheshireKitten123 · 20/12/2021 11:43

"There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby."

You have a 1 year old and 'little food in the house'. Shock Why have you allowed that situation to arise ?! Don't you have a freezer?

You know we are in a pandemic so why allow stocks to get so low?

Surely your neighbours could pick up some items for you when they go shopping?

ancientgran · 20/12/2021 11:49

I've got a Sainsbury's order coming on Thursday but was due to go out today to get some bread/milk and fresh fruit/veg/salad today to get through till Thursday but decided I don't want to due to covid levels and vulnerable DH. Went online last night and got an Iceland delivery which is now here and packed away.

Iceland seem to have loads of delivery slots where I am, I could get a same delivery today for example. Have you tried them?

Staryflight445 · 20/12/2021 11:51

@CheshireKitten123

That’s so unnecessarily judgemental. Can you hand on heart say you’ve got 10 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks at home at all times?
