To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

@Luhou: I'm going to be THAT poster

We are 19 months into this pandemic, record case numbers, & you have a small child. WHY don't you have food for a week in your house in case of isolation? With cases as they are it would be a sensible precaution for everyone, & especially you as you say you don't have family nearby/are not in catchment for various delivery services

I second the suggestion of Iceland - they release slots on the day., & you can do a full shop there (so bread/milk/fruit & veg, meats - not just frozen stuff)

I hope you manage to get it sorted. If Iceland doesn' work, maybe a local shop will let you do a pick up in your car from outside their shop

ChiefStockingStuffer · 20/12/2021 10:50

If you're fully vaccinated and haven't tested positive yourself, you keep testing and carry on carefully.

Get your food in; you all need to eat. Just stay away from people as much as possible and wear a mask.

stupiduser · 20/12/2021 10:51

You don't want to worry a friend by asking them and inconveniencing them but you are willing to go to a shop with Covid symptoms and risk infecting dozens of people? Nice

She’s got symptoms- she needs to isolate.
Hemingwayscatz · 20/12/2021 10:53

Do you have Amazon prime? They have grocery shopping on there and it’s usually same day delivery, I’ve used it when desperate a couple of times and it’s been delivered within hours of me placing the order. There’s also Uber eats as an option, pretty sure that’s also same day delivery.

Hemingwayscatz · 20/12/2021 10:54

WHY don't you have food for a week in your house in case of isolation?

What a privileged life you must lead if you cannot fathom why anyone doesn’t just have a weeks supply of food in ‘just incase’.

Not everyone can afford to stock up like this. Some people live week to week

Beautiful3 · 20/12/2021 10:56

Second an amazon morrisons delivery, they have loads of slots around here. Or click and collect and ask a friend to collect and drop off for you? (Stick a bottle of wine in the shop to gift to your friend, to keep her sweet).

Can you really not fathom that many people don’t have the means to stock up “just in case”?

Am glad you’re sorted OP

TheGarbageManCan · 20/12/2021 10:57

I was having a nosy and there’s click and collect available where we live. If you could ask a friend to collect that would be much less difficult than going to a shop with a list. Of one of my chums here asked me now, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Hope you all feel better soon 💐

TheGarbageManCan · 20/12/2021 10:58

Glad you’re sorted!

I will have food for over a week come 3.30pm this afternoon.
I have obviously told Covid this.

Do you really always have food for a week at all times?

Namechangehereandnow · 20/12/2021 11:00

Read properly. They have symptoms! Ffs

Anyway, symptoms or not, you are told when taking your pcr, to isolate until your results come through. It really is that simple 🙄

Franklin12 · 20/12/2021 11:01

I am sorry to be rather negative but I am reading that you want someone to say as there is no one to ask, as no supermarket has a slot, as Deliveroo wont deliver to your house you are OK to go out just this once.

There are lots of options. It wont be ideal, there wont be a huge turkey dinner plus lots of visitors and certainly your 1 year wont starve. That is being a drama larma!

PS: I used to work in a supermarket. Call them and tell them the situation. We had plenty of this last Xmas!

Gonnagetgoing · 20/12/2021 11:02

Put a message on Facebook or local whatsapp group and ask someone to pick up for you.

Don't expose yourself to anyone else!

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

DespairingHomeowner · 20/12/2021 11:02

@Hemingwayscatz, @Auntielateralflow:
= we all have to eat.

Keeping some UHT/dried milk in, a few tins of beans, a loaf in the freezer etc is a sensible precaution. It doesn't have to be smoked salmo & caviar , and the point is to buy things you eat anyway and rotate it. You also don't need to keep all this stuff in the kitchen if no space - under beds/sofas etc. Even if you can't afford a week's worth, 2-3 days would help so that you have time to get a slot etc

Also a damn sight cheaper than paying for amazon prime etc

This isn't about privelege: its about priorities & planning, While sadly there will be families that don't have the £20 or so to have a few extra days of long life food in, that is NOT going to be the majority

@Franklin12 - yes - ideal - I recall one of my friends worked as a checkout girl in a supermarket years ago - if you ring them up and especially if you're a usual customer they'll find a way to deliver - even if just chucking shop in a taxi and sending that to OP.
Jacketpotato84 · 20/12/2021 11:03

If you've exhausted all other options I.e asking someone to go shop for you, can't afford takeaway delivered ect then go to the shop, mask on in and out quick as you can.
Your right you can't let dd starve.
If it was me in this situation then I would have no choice but to go to the shop.

Staryflight445 · 20/12/2021 11:04

Yabu but I understand the struggle. I hope someone can help you!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/12/2021 11:05

dont ask on mumsnet!

i popped in for loo rolls on my way home.
we would all do it,

dash in, with mask, small shop

or not!

monsterflake · 20/12/2021 11:06

If you are anywhere near Portsmouth I would be happy to drop some bits for you or go shopping for you.

Do you really always have food for a week at all times?

Yes: it might not be my favourite things, but I have always had enough food to last for at least a week in my home (tinned food, UHT milk, long life juice etc) - in case I get ill with flu, can't get out for any reason etc. It has proved handy more than once

Back in the 70s & 80s families I grew up around (who were v poor) all had a back up stock of food in the understairs cupboard: for power cuts or in case of being v short of money one week. Its not about privelege, its about making sure you think ahead

Staryflight445 · 20/12/2021 11:07

My dd tested positive on Friday and to secure us getting food over Xmas I’ve had to spend £90 on shopping and £10 on a delivery slot. Thankfully I managed to book a delivery shop the day after her symptoms started so we have plenty of food and guaranteed Xmas dinner incase me and dh end up testing positive too.

I think it’s terrible supermarkets didn’t prepare for this.
There wasn’t many slots left when I booked mine, I feel for others that are going through this atm.

Franklin12 · 20/12/2021 11:08

They DO have choices. They are just closing down all the very good suggestions been given.

I would be asking how many supermarkets have they tried?
Have they put a notice on Facebook?
Ask friends and family?
Have they contracted NHS Responders?
Have they put a notice on Next Door?

They really dont seem to have exhausted all options. They want someone to say as long as they are quick it will be fine and Jacket has just done so!

Chewbunn · 20/12/2021 11:08

Glad you got a slot. I would say though ask friends for stuff if needed, as long as you make clear theres no expectation then they can either say yes or no without pressure. I'd happily grab some bits for any of mine if needed.
