To go food shopping while waiting on PCR

Luhou · 20/12/2021 10:14

Found out we've been in contact with somebody (close contact, inside, all day, unavoidable sittuation) who has tested positive. Had all the tell tale symptoms of covid so await results of PCR.

I absolutely think I ABU, but I am stressing out so much. There's little food in the house, no delivery slots as Christmas. We don't live in a big city so no deliveroo etc and no family nearby.

What's the alternative? Can't let my DD (1) starve!

I understand why you don't want to burden anyone but look at it like this - would a friend rather do you the favour or rather be stood next to you in the supermarket ?!?!?

Just ask a couple of friends, I'm sure they would rather help you than cat h Covid!

opalescent · 20/12/2021 10:34

@DrinkFeckArseBrick

I'd put a message on a local Facebook group explaining your situation and asking if anyone has a teenager on school holidays that would like to earn some money and pick you some stuff up from the shops, you can paypal or transfer them the money
Same. People can be so kind in these situations
Flippydip · 20/12/2021 10:34

We've had a similar situation. I checked all supermarkets and their click & collect and delivery slots, and late at night a few would usually free up for the next day. We just grabbed one as soon as we saw it.

Luhou · 20/12/2021 10:35

Thanks for suggestions.

I will make every effort not to go to a supermarket! And will be going through everybodys suggestions I am just panicking. Family are 4hrs away, no deliveroo or amazon. And yes I've tried all the supermarkets.

Not near any of the locations people have suggested. Thank you though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Of course you shouldn’t go.
You’ve even said you can ask a friend - just do that.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 20/12/2021 10:37

I called a bakery and veg box place and begged (I’m supposed to be abroad so cupboards properly bare). I did get a true friend to help get a frozen turkey etc. However, the local councils still run covid support volunteers so go on the district council website and call them to get you food.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/12/2021 10:37

You must have something for today, whilst you await results. We got results in less than 12 hours yesterday (10am, back in the evening). This was done at a local centre.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/12/2021 10:38

PS I hope it's negative. Ours were and any symptoms completely vanished now.

Longcovid21 · 20/12/2021 10:38

Are you in any school year WhatsApp chats? Can you put a plea on there - I'm sure there will be an army of mums willing to help. Are there any local community groups? A village group on Facebook? Ring all the supermarkets and explain and ask for an emergency slot. You are coming across as very defeatist OP. You simply can't go out and spread the virus.

MabelMoo23 · 20/12/2021 10:38

Do you mean you don’t have Amazon, or Amazon prime don’t deliver to you?
Deliveroo don’t deliver to us either but Amazon prime does.

Otherwise it’s going to be a FB message or a fellow school mum.
Do you have a class WhatsApp group where you could ask for help?

CactusFlowers · 20/12/2021 10:40

Have you tried Iceland? They often have slots when other supermarkets don’t and they sell the basics as well frozen stuff.

Longcovid21 · 20/12/2021 10:40

Also we are in Wales if we can help

Aullu · 20/12/2021 10:42

For no amazon do you mean the morrisons side of it? You can get food on amazon without that, noodles, tinned stuff etc just on the usual amazon delivery.

ChristmasCovid · 20/12/2021 10:43

Try the NHS volunteer responders - this situation is what it was set up for 08081963646

BrieAndChilli · 20/12/2021 10:44

Spar are doing home deliveries if you have one near you?

Rajono · 20/12/2021 10:45

I know you don't want to be a burden, but you will be surprised how many people would be happy to help. Alot of people have had to isolate at one point or another and understand the problems it creates, so don't worry about being a burden and reach out to people

Workyticket · 20/12/2021 10:45

Where are you? People can suggest help much more easily with a vague location.

Ring a local taxi or cleaning company at a quiet time. During the day taxis are just sat round here. One might do a shop and drop off for £££?

Local Facebook group?

Friends teenager?

If you have a car you literally just need someone to do the actual shop bit - you could pick it up. Means trusting someone with your card though I suppose

Ring the co-op or local small supermarket and explain? See if they'll do a shop for you to pick up at the back door?

Where the hell do you live that amazon don't deliver to??

Caspianberg · 20/12/2021 10:46

As neighbour or friend to collect an order.

We live in a country with no online food delivery, or Amazon fresh.

But when we needed to isolate managed to call local ish food stores, order and pay and one delivered for us that evening ( even though they don’t deliver in general) and another a neighbour picked up for us.

Amazon if you have can order dried goods usually, even though they take several days to arrive and no fresh option.

Luhou · 20/12/2021 10:47

Thanks everyone.

Slot just appeared with Iceland. Problem solved!

Our local pharmacist have a list of people who will help in exactly these situations. Maybe phone and see if yours has?

BlingLoving · 20/12/2021 10:47

Unless you are the type who is always asking for help when it's a bit silly, which sounds unlikely based on your posting history, I cannot imagine that a friend or neighbour would not be willing to help out in this situation.

Also, try what sapping or facebook to ask if anyone has an online delivery due with time to add to the order? Then you can ask them to add stuff, send them the money and they just have to drop it off at you or you do a quick drive by without getting out the car? I have a slot on Thursday for example and would be happy to add some bits for someone who couldn't get to the shops.

Caspianberg · 20/12/2021 10:47

And yes, taxi company good call, they will pick up click and collect for you

irregularegular · 20/12/2021 10:48

You definitely should isolate if you have symptoms and a close contact. It is highly likely you are infectious. Surely someone can help you out by dropping out a few basics to tide you over until you can get a supermarket delivery? I'm really sorry though. So not what you want just before Christmas.

Mudflaps · 20/12/2021 10:48

Check out local clubs, our local GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) have volunteers doing shopping, collecting prescriptions etc for anyone isolating or cocooning, it was very successful and I think helped keep covid numbers down. We are in a relatively rural area but with a lot of newcomers who commute to the city for work and hadn't integrated in to community prior to covid, they were glad of the help and now volunteer themselves (and now the kids are playing GAA), reach out, don't be shy, everyone wants to help, this awful time has shown how much people actually want to help others.

Newcomer68 · 20/12/2021 10:49

Don't know if this is an option for you, but what about Amazon Prime, if you don't already have it? I hesitate to use ours in this way, but we have had to use it for a couple of Morrisons orders recently. You won't get the same range of products as if you're able to order direct, but it might be an option.

Our JustEat (or it might be Deliveroo or Uber, I can't get in to check which one at the moment) also delivers from the local Co-op so it might be worth looking at that?

Rotten luck for you, this close to Christmas.
