To ask - If you could only have THREE veg on your Christmas dinner?

goldenoldie1 · 19/12/2021 22:17

Top three options if that was the limit for Xmas dinner?

Mine is probably parsnips, nice carrots and broccoli.

I know I'm going to change my mind when I see other responses.

Steamed sprouts
Braised red cabbage
Roast swede (though everyone else in the family prefers carrots so they'll all moan).

I'm presuming that this is in addition to roast potatoes and mash .

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:25

Assuming it’s a turkey dinner: sprouts, carrots, parsnips.

It’d be different for goose or duck, and different again for pork.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/12/2021 23:25

Potatoes ARE a vegetable.
Why does anyone need / want different 3 vegetables just because it's Christmas Dinner?????????
Potatoes = yes
Brussel sprouts with or without whatever you want = yes
Third veg = no need!

blueshoes · 19/12/2021 23:26

Brussel Sprouts
Roast potatoes
I am torn between peas and cauliflower cheese

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:28

We often have 3 or 4 (sometimes more) vegetables just for a normal day-to-day dinner. We like them, they’re tasty and good for you, what’s not to love! So we always have plenty at Christmas too because that’s the way we like it.

Pbbananabagel · 19/12/2021 23:31

Cheesy leeks
Braised red cabbage
Roasted carrots

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:34

Braised red cabbage is on my list for goose, duck and pork.

But I can do without it for turkey - I always feels there’s a danger it’ll overpower it since turkey has quite a subtle flavour.

RedRec · 19/12/2021 23:34

Cauliflower cheese
Carrots
Savoy cabbage.

JaceLancs · 19/12/2021 23:35

Brussel sprouts
Cauliflower cheese
Mashed carrots

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:35

I always feels? Hmm I love the way this autocorrect messes with what I write!

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 19/12/2021 23:37

And who cares about their "five a day" on CHRISTMAS DAY"???????
Do they also count the nibbles before lunch? The Christmas pudding with cream / custard / brandy butter ? The selection box chocolate while watching telly afterwards???? Or do they all pull on their jogging suits and go for a run around the park?

waitingpatientlyforspring · 19/12/2021 23:37

Are you including potatoes as a veg? I'm vegetarian so this is hard as you are seriously spoiling my christmas dinner.

If potatoes included then:

Mash, sprouts, carrots.

If potatoes are extra then :

Spouts, carrots and braised red cabbage

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:39

Ohhh is it three veg or three veg dishes?? Because I wanted to count carrots and parsnips as one which would leave me an extra option...

KeepApart · 19/12/2021 23:39

Why all the votes for broccoli?! The most mediocre of all vegetables, why waste space on the plate with broccoli?!

Brussels sprouts, roast parsnips and roast carrots for me.
Braised red cabbage is tasty for the leftovers the next day or with the ham

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/12/2021 23:41

Brussels sprouts - steamed, lots of pepper
Steamed carrots - circles not batons
Roast parsnips - with honey

But I will also be having braised red cabbage
And mashed swede.

Can’t really do without any of my top 5!

JustBkind · 19/12/2021 23:43

Carrots
Broccoli
Sprouts
Green beans
Cauliflower cheese

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/12/2021 23:45

You're a monster for even suggesting a mere three vegetables for Christmas Dinner.

Carrots
Peas
Steamed Swede
Roast Parsnips (I'll have those rather than potatoes if it's an either/or situation)
Sprouts (because it's the law)
Red Cabbage

Second tier Roast Dinner vegetables include savoy cabbage, broccoli and steamed cauliflower, steamed courgette sticks and green beans (preferably runners).

Vegetables that do not belong anywhere near a Christmas Dinner of any description are

Roast onion
Leeks (great braised and with lemon, garlic and thyme/tarragon chicken, but that's not a Christmas dinner, that's a special meal) or Fennel.
Sweetcorn - DP still gets this wrong
Peppers/roast tomatoes/Aubergine - DP only got this wrong the once
Mange Tout
Baby Sweetcorn
Asparagus

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:46

Ok if it’s dishes it’d be Brussels sprouts with garlic and pancetta, roast carrots and parsnips with honey, lemon and thyme, and romanesco broccoli because I love the way it looks and it’s nutty flavour would go nicely I think.

Ohh I’m so hungry now.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 19/12/2021 23:47

*its

Bloody autocorrect again!

finova · 19/12/2021 23:47

Roasted Brussels
Carrot and swede mash

lollipoprainbow · 19/12/2021 23:48

Sprouts

Thepowerofthelook · 19/12/2021 23:49

It's running tights, not jogging suits. And the run is usually in the morning to enhance the post ten million vegetables meal sleep on the sofa.

I don't eat any of those things. I don't like them/can't have them - which isn't saying there's anything wrong with eating them, I just don't and happily prefer half an arable farm's worth of veg.

Mind you, I'm also the dick whose Christmas 'pudding' is going to be a fresh fruit salad. Because I like it and can eat it without my insides self destructing for the next fortnight.

noblegreenk · 19/12/2021 23:51

Roast potatoes
Red cabbage
Honey glazed carrots

bumbleymummy · 19/12/2021 23:52

Roast Potatoes, roast parsnips and sprouts.
