To have opened the door

Went to a restaurant this eve, was busier than I expected and all tables were randomly put together to form 2 king table so we were sat next to total strangers… wasn’t expecting that. So I opened up the door near us to get some fresh air in, checked with waitress they agreed. A lady went and closed it, so I opened it again and then she closed it again… so I opened it!

Were they there already or did they arrive after the door was open?

You asked the waitress but not the other diners. You don’t get to make a decision on behalf of people who are already there.

We are in the middle of a pandemic. Businesses want to stay open. Ventilation is their best chance of making their premises safe. YANBU

@Billiesmovingout

Yea to me a bit of fresh air seems like a no brainer!

If you weren’t comfy you should have left.

I would be annoyed at having to eat in the cold.

Newduvet · 19/12/2021 20:47

You have been so so rude. It’s cold.

While that is true I son't think it's unreasonable to not want to eat your meal next to an open door in the middle of December.
etulosba · 19/12/2021 20:48

I think you were rude.

Bubblty · 19/12/2021 20:49

No one wants cold food. And you should have at least asked them first!

transformandriseup · 19/12/2021 20:50

If the woman who closed the door was sat close to it and freezing as a result I wouldn't blame her for closing it.

Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken · 19/12/2021 20:51

If schools and buses have to have windows open I do think all public areas should have fresh air circulating.I would not have sat in that particular area with strangers though. The restaurant should be maximising customers space, not pushing people together.

YellowClouds · 19/12/2021 20:51

At no point in the battle of the door did you think about speaking to the woman?

I would hate to be eating with a door wide open in December

Snowmanuel · 19/12/2021 20:51

Where in the country are you, OP? Everyone’s saying ‘it’s freezing out’ but where I am it’s 13 degrees. Which is really mild. I got hot in my coat earlier.

Beautiful3 · 19/12/2021 20:52

Why open the door and make it draughty and Cold for everyone?! If you're worried about covid then don't eat inside a restaurant. Get a takeaway and eat at home. Seriously, you ought to have checked with people around you, if they wanted the door open.

Interrobanger · 19/12/2021 20:52

If you’re so worried about covid that you don’t want to sit next to a stranger, then don’t go and eat at a restaurant in the first place!

It’s December. No one wants to pay money to eat in a 3 degree draught. You were very rude and unreasonable. Why didn’t you just ask to move seats?

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 19/12/2021 20:52

@YellowClouds

It wasn’t wide open. It was maybe 1/3 open.

SW England so to be fair it was pretty chilly!!

@Interrobanger

That was the weird thing that has joined all the tables together, so they were in two long lines
Across the whole restaurant… really no idea why!!

Exactly.

I was driving home today at 4pm and the car did that bonging noise and alerted me to the temperature having dropped to 4 degrees.

Because they wanted to maximise their use of space at what should have been a busy time.

You should have spoken to the lady ffs

Flowerlane · 19/12/2021 20:56

Think overall the waitress was in the wrong for not checking with other customers if they minded the door being open.

I wouldn’t have been happy sitting eating and then it suddenly turning cold because a door was opened.

I would have left once I had seen the seating arrangements though…

catchyjem · 19/12/2021 20:57

You were really rude. It's horrible sitting in the cold.

Max 4, min 3 here today, SW
littlepeas · 19/12/2021 20:58

You made a decision that resulted in everyone around you being cold and miserable! So very unreasonable. If you were unhappy you should have left.

LethargicActress · 19/12/2021 20:58

We’re you at Wagamama’s or somewhere similar where the tables are always like that?

If so, YABespeciallyU, but yabu either way.

If you’re worried enough about risk in restaurants to spoil other people’s evenings and make them uncomfortable, then restaurants aren’t the place for you right now.

ShinyballsAndChocolateTinsel · 19/12/2021 20:59

I think the green light would be the waitress saying good idea. They have to work there all night
The restaurant I have sympathy for after the last couple of years but who, realistically would want to eat out of choice to a stranger? They were the ones who planned the tables
I would have asked for the manager

rwalker · 19/12/2021 21:00

You should of left just because you wanted the door open didn't mean the whole restraunt did.
