Christmas bonuses-do you get one?

If you do get a Christmas bonus, what job do you do and how much do you get-enough to put in the pool you've always wanted or a gym membership like National Lampoon?Grin🎄 I've never had one as the NHS didn't value us. Well, unless a slightly shorter shift at Christmas counts. That 15 minutes made such a difference Hmm

My DP is a postie so gets a sheet of 1st class stamps.

Love this!!

gofigureit · 17/12/2021 17:21

No bonus from one job, a small company, my boss does us all the same £25 present. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's shit. Would prefer the cash, it's more personal!

Another job my boss gives me a bonus through payroll - this year by the time I've paid tax/NI and bosses present I'm about £50 up.

Must be lovely to get a decent bonus, enough to pay for a holiday/new sofa etc.

Pearldrops04 · 17/12/2021 17:32

We all got (10 employees) £150 in a card from our boss yesterday which is nice!

HollaHolla · 17/12/2021 17:37

Hahahahahahahahaha. No.

I work in education. My boss, on c. £70k, gave an office of 45 of us.... one box of Celebrations.
I have spent my own money, to ensure every member of the team gets a small gift, to thank them for the efforts of a particularly tough year. But, that's because I'm not a dick.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 17/12/2021 17:39

Yes, first time this year…. have worked here for 10 years but this year we became an Employee Owned Company so we received a tax free bonus in December. £1200 for ft staff and pro rata for pt, like me.

We always have 2 Christmas meals paid for - one staff only and one with clients.

ufucoffee · 17/12/2021 17:40

No. Public sector. We get nothing. We finish on Xmas eve and return on the 4th January. We have to take the days off from our annual leave allowance.

totallydonein · 17/12/2021 17:40

Emergency call handler - no bonus here plus I'm working every day except New Year's Eve.
Then I'll be back in the call centre at 6am on New Year's Day!Confused
Happy Christmas everyone !

Yep, we're the same. I should have said it's a University. With the increase in NI, Tax, and Pension, I actually take home less than I did when I started this job, 6 years ago. So, that's nice.
Hoppymclimpy · 17/12/2021 17:47

@montymole

Yes *@Hoppymclimpy* 😂 forgot about the £10 extra DLA
It's the highlight of the festive season! Tbh, myself and DD giggle about it signalling Christmas 'officially' starting in our house 😆 As for the stamps DP gets, they get used throughout the year so are actually useful!
EmmaStone · 17/12/2021 17:50

I work for a subsidiary of a large group, and a company bonus is based on how we've done at year end against our budgets and forecasts. The bonus pot is then divided in a discretionary manner by the senior leadership team, nothing to do with percentages of earnings etc (although of course the highest earners get the most!). I've had between £1k and £5k over the years, nothing since Covid, although hopefully we'll have earned one this year - it gets paid in April.

Also, we occasionally get other discretionary bonuses based on additional sales of our products (it's a bit weird), where that's happened, I've included it in my totals above, it doesn't tend to be very much.

itwasntaparty · 17/12/2021 17:57

Back in the day I'd get £1500-£3000, not related to the performance bonus at FYE.

Got a £39 voucher this year, and I'm really happy with that as wasn't expecting anything.

Boredof2020 · 17/12/2021 18:13

I got 140 points what I can exchange for vouchers so its like £140 also got the 23rd and 24th off

Maggie178 · 17/12/2021 18:16

I work in the NHS I got a Terry's chocolate orange

Lezbehonest · 17/12/2021 18:56

Just had it today £1k tax adjusted but we've had a record breaking year. Never normally this good!! I actually squeaked when I saw my paycheque hit.

Oriunda · 17/12/2021 19:29

@IUseThisNameToTalkAboutMoney

Financial services.

This year just over 40k. Usually it's nearer 30k.

In my industry, back office and support like me get a percentage of our salary and front office people who bring in business or can draw a direct line between what they do and profit made get a multiple.

We have bonus ranges defined with our jobs and if you are doing a good job at your level you should get roughly in the middle. If you get a low bonus it's a message to do better and if you get zero it's a deliberate insult and they want you to resign.

The higher the bonus, the more likely you get some of it deferred and/or in the form of shares in the company you work for.

This is absolutely spot on. Also, City salaries can initially seem low compared to the bonuses, as people expect the salary to be made up by the bonus.

Whilst salaries/bonuses seem huge, the hours are very long plus you can be fired in minutes with no comeback; whilst IT come along and disconnect your PC, and a desk assistant gathers up your coat and belongings (you’re not usually allowed back onto the trading floor). There is no job security at all. If you complain, that will follow you around to your next job (if you find one).

There is always a set pot for bonuses. If a high performer throws his toys out of the pram and threatens to leave, his bonus will be upped and nicked from some poor sod who didn’t do as well and the firm couldn’t care less if s/he resigns or not.

One firm DH worked for went bust; his bonuses of several years in the form of shares tanked.

@Mummmaa

I work in hospitality in a hotel. We get an extra £1 an hour over the two weeks of christmas, a bottle of house wine and a £30 gift voucher. The company have also done '12 days of christmas' where each day is a diffrent prize a random staff member will win. We also get £1 an hour extra over the summer high peak (july/august) and at the end of summer the ones that survive (i think of it as, as the ones that leave during summer dont get it) get a thank you card and a £30 gift voucher. The hotel pay over living wage and is one of the best paying hotels in the area, its a 3 and pays more than the 4 down the road
Wow Mumma I want to wrk there!! That sounds an incredibly generous hotel!! I work in a 5* one and we don’t get that!!
MissyB1 · 18/12/2021 12:51

@SarahProblem

I think some people have really fallen for the "bash the NHS" rhetoric that certain media outlets are perpetuating
Yep! Probably the same people that were out clapping on their doorsteps too. I said then they would soon turn against NHS staff, it was fairly obvious.
Someaddedsugar · 19/12/2021 11:00

@Ljmumun ❤️ Hope you’re ok. Thank you to everyone on here in the NHS and education sectors and for everything you do, and especially for everything you’ve done throughout the pandemic.

We don’t get a bonus in my role but in normal times would get a lunch out (buy own drinks) and this year we all got a £15 love2shop voucher instead which is lovely. We don’t get annual financial year end bonuses either.

I did used to work for an independent jeweller and we used to get a Christmas bonus related to our annual salary - when I was 18 I received £1000 and felt like I’d won the lottery.

EllaVaNight · 19/12/2021 16:05

I work in a care home which is part of a fairly big group. No bonuses for us or enhanced pay for working bank holidays. We got a fair few boxes of chocolates from family members which were quickly swooped away. I've also been put down for 4 extra 12hr shifts without being asked. The owner has got a nice brand new Ferrari though.

uneffingbelievable · 19/12/2021 16:21

What a bitchy comment.

Kshhuxnxk - "Teachers and NHS you sound as if you're hard done by - I would like to think none of my tax and insurance was going towards staff bonuses You're not exactly on MW are you!"

Depends what you call minimum wage - if I added up the hours I actually do and what my contract says I do - then to be honest it is not far off.

As to the comment on pensions - my public sector pension is OK - has gone down massively over the last few years, please do not believe all that the media tells you, it is no longer final salary and has not been for almost a decade.. Maybe my pension is the equivalent of some of these bonuses - if invested in your pension and then tax relief on top - that is quite a nice little earner.

Oh and by the way - my tax payers monies go to pay my wages and I do not support bonuses being paid in the NHS. However, private company employers can not whinge about pensions in the public sector and then take not insignificant bonuses and claim they are hard done by.

Ski4130 · 19/12/2021 17:02

We usually get £300 and a hamper, but I never really rely on getting it as we’re a small company and I know it comes out of our boss’ pocket.

We’ve got it again this year, and it’s lovely because it’s not a big enough amount that you think you need to do something really sensible with it, but it’s more than enough to be able to buy something lovely with. The hamper was nice too, full of wine and cheese which we’ll power through over the next couple of weeks.

It's disgusting that you don't get enhancements for bank holidays!
Funnylittlefloozie · 19/12/2021 17:05

Am also a professional in the public sector, but no bonuses, no time off over Christmas beyond the statutory bit, and not much gratitude!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/12/2021 17:09

I work for a charity - I get a big box of chocolates and a sub-£100 bonus at Christmas. No other bonuses.

Idontbelieveit14 · 19/12/2021 17:10

No I work in a school…
