Christmas bonuses-do you get one?

If you do get a Christmas bonus, what job do you do and how much do you get-enough to put in the pool you've always wanted or a gym membership like National Lampoon?Grin🎄 I've never had one as the NHS didn't value us. Well, unless a slightly shorter shift at Christmas counts. That 15 minutes made such a difference Hmm

Not me as I usually pay for treats for other staff out of my own pocket but my husband works for ASDA and they gave everyone a tub of Miniature Heroes and a mini selection box which i thought was lovely, especially the handwritten tag.

SloeFox · 16/12/2021 17:59

I worked for a professional services firm. The first year they decided to do bonuses they did 5% of our salary for everyone across the board. Problem was they could never afford to do that again so it whittled down and down and down and down until last year we got a £30 waterstones voucher. Grin

This year they went bust merged with another firm and have just made the vast bulk of the workforce redundant a couple of weeks ago. Merry Christmas.

mindutopia · 16/12/2021 18:00

I’m a lecturer at a university. No, never had a Christmas bonus anywhere I’ve ever worked across a number of sectors. We do have closure days though, usually 7 days or so off paid at both Christmas and Easter paid, in addition to our AL.

I do have a twatty family member though who complains very loudly to all who will listen about what a horrible year it’s been if his Christmas bonus is less than £100,000. Hmm He works in commodity trading.

MasterBeth · 16/12/2021 18:01

Two bottles of wine from the owner.

FourEyesGood · 16/12/2021 18:02

Another teacher, so no. But one of my Year 9 students gave me a chocolate orange today! That was amazing.

TheChosenTwo · 16/12/2021 18:02

My headteacher sellotaped a malteser reindeer to my Christmas card, please don’t send me PM’s of jealousy/crying favouritism Grin

Cocomarine · 16/12/2021 18:02
@Cocomarine my company allows you to salary sacrifice your bonus into a pension. But you have to put the entire bonus in. Most people do as they pay 50% tax
That’s good, and anyone can put a bonus into a private pension of course.
But I’m talking about pensionable pay - relevant to DB schemes, which the NHS is.
When it comes to calculating my pension based on my salary, I’d rather have had the higher salary, than a portion of it designated as a bonus. Then I can get exactly to sand immediate tax benefits AND a higher pension!

TheChosenTwo · 16/12/2021 18:03

In fact, he’s interim, it’s the first time ever since I worked at that school that I’ve had a Christmas card Grin so I consider myself incredibly lucky!

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 16/12/2021 18:03

I've just started in the public sector - 25 days leave, had to use annual leave to book time over Christmas. Definitely no bonus. Not even a Christmas party (hah). Would love to know which bit you're in...

NMC2022 · 16/12/2021 18:04

Oh and we have been given extra time off over Christmas/NY without having to use annual leave

converseandjeans · 16/12/2021 18:05

sunsetsupernova yes I need to rethink my career choices 😉 🤔It just sounds like loads of money - like a mini lottery win!

I'm lucky to get long holidays & an interesting job.

Amirite · 16/12/2021 18:07

Performance based bonus in January. This year I’m getting approx £4K which I appreciate is very generous. We also got a random £1k thank you a few months ago! I know we are very lucky.

Thumbcat · 16/12/2021 18:07

Postie, 50 1st class stamps and just under £200 before tax

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 16/12/2021 18:10

Charity sector- no bonus but I do get a card from Prince Charles!
DH - financial trading betwern 200-300k.
Yes it's a lot, yes it's amazing, yes we're bloody lucky.

SenseSphere · 16/12/2021 18:10

No, we get an target based annual bonus and/or a discretionary bonus in January based on the previous year.

I always remember my dad used to get a fifteen quid meat voucher from the factory where he worked.

Allywill · 16/12/2021 18:10

Nope. We used to get half a day credit for “Christmas shopping” many many years ago but nothing now. Still at least we have still got our “gold standard” pensions and a “job for life” - not.

Frankola · 16/12/2021 18:11

I've had a job previously where I got an annual bonus but it wasn't at Christmas.

I also had a boss who told me, when I suggested some kind of one off Christmas bonus or gift for pandemic working efforts, that his employees gifts were having a job.

I no longer work for him obviously Grin

SophieHatterPendragon · 16/12/2021 18:12

DH got one this year

Butchyrestingface · 16/12/2021 18:12

I'm freelance so I don't even get PAID because all my clients most unreasonably go off on holiday during the Christmas period. Xmas Grin

But then, according to some people, the life of a self-employed person is one long hurrah fleecing the state via undeclared income so...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/12/2021 18:13

£300ish of vouchers usually and a fuddle on the last day. I work in manufacturing, private sector. Manual skilled and unskilled work.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 16/12/2021 18:13

Support worker. We usually get a £10 live to shop voucher. Working Xmas and boxing day. Partner works for same company and working Xmas Eve, new year's eve, new year's Day and 2nd. We have 2 toddlers. Would rather have the time off with the kids than a voucher tbf.

Tabbacus · 16/12/2021 18:13

Not now, but my first ever weekend job I got £100 at Christmas and an additional day of leave in December, we all got the same regardless of how many hours we did, what level we were or how long we had been there which I thought was wonderful. It was very much appreciated.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 16/12/2021 18:13

No bonus but we get a ton of perks throughout the year and I get well paid.

In ye olden days we used to get £500 if we met targets every 3 months but those days are well gone.

Husband is a postal worker and gets a sheet of first class stamps each year Grin

stingofthebutterfly · 16/12/2021 18:14

Yeah, the government give me an extra £10 on top of the measly £260 per month that I'm expected to live on, as a carer. Going to really push the boat out this year...

converseandjeans · 16/12/2021 18:14

DH - financial trading between 200-300k.

If that's the bonus what is the salary?!
