rant alert
te entire holier than thou attitude. huge genreralistaion, i know. but whats so speical about waiting till the baby is six months old before weaning that will garantee said mothers a direct ticket to heaven?
from what i recall, upping the age to six months didnt happen because of some amazing scintific breakthrough. no new data was used t o make the decision. (a mnetter showed the evidence of this on some thread.
and then the whole breast bottle thing. the ones spouting statistics at everyone, with their smug expressions. it doesnt matter. every mom does what she sees as best for her baby. we dont constantly need to have information shoved in our noses.

my eldest is ten, and youngest four, so i'm not that far away from these subjects, but, some peoples attitudes just really really get on my tits.

so what temp are you meant to do them at?
when i bottlefed ds, he of the tshirt and chicken nuggets fame, i made them up with water boiled, and cooled so no long scalding, then pput in the fridge. to feed i would heat them up so the chill of the fridge was off, but not warm as such.
is that all wrong now? will i have people look down my nose if i give that advice?

No - some heat them up, some don't - no right or wrong. I have done both but find room temp easier. It also means no faffing about in the night waiting for the milk to heat. When I was feeding in the night I used to take up bottle with cooled boiled water and a litte tub with the correct amount of formula in it. When dd woke all I had to do was empty the formula in and shake - total prep time 5 secs!!!!

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 18/12/2007 19:21

Pukka that's exactly what I used to do.
But then again I'm an oldie too!!!

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 19:23

Hmm, WRT all this how to make a bottle, apparently there is a way they are meant to be done now, so I assume that was what the mum was trying to tell you doodle, but I would think the problem laid in the way she spoke to you, rather than what she said?

tee hee[smug emoticon] i breastfed the other two, so no faffing round with anything.
i catnapped whilst feeding them. or mumsnetted, and only needed tobe awake whilst nappychanging

and FWIW, no-one ever told me how to make a bottle when I FF DD, so if there is a 'correct' way to do it then I'd like someone to tell me, if I ever have to use formula again.

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 18/12/2007 19:28

and I weaned at 4 months, that was ok then and it wasn't THAT long ago and DD v. healthy

karen999 · 18/12/2007 19:29

Oh Piffle - I thought 8 years was a big age gap!! When my dd2 came along I was a little concerned about how I would cope! However, I have absolutely loved every minute and now think I am a dab hand at this mothering business!! How are you finding such a big gap??

MerryPIFFLEmas · 18/12/2007 19:38

Weel I have ds1 13.5, dd just turned 5 and ds2 8 mths.

The gaps are great, the large gaps are fab as the kids are more self sufficient, out of nappies/prams and are at school, each gets one to one as a baby.
I did try for a smalll gap, but lack of man after ds1 was an issue and bloody nature was our foe between dd and ds2
However I love the gaps. DD and ds2 very close already.
DS1 also has another brother 5 days old as his dad has just had another baby
Confusing huh!

DingDongTheNitsHaveGone · 18/12/2007 19:42

I also stopped sterilising anything at around 6 months. Has that changed too? Probably 6 years now!

MerryPIFFLEmas · 18/12/2007 19:43

I never sterilised a bloody thing

pukkapatch · 18/12/2007 19:45

i never sterilised anything with breastfed dc. but with mix fed ds, i sterilised till 12 months. really only coz i was in the routine of it.

dd is only two years old, oh venerable oldies, will it be mandatory as she gets older for me to rubbish new research/govt guidelines as she gets older on the grounds that i haven't killed her yet? do tell.
