Has anyone seen the new series yet? Well, first two episodes?
Just felt a bit low watching it 🤷🏻‍♀️Eurgh, why do we have to age!

OP posts:

I recognised Gloria, Big's secretary from Friends. She played Joey's mum.

SnailandtheWail · 11/12/2021 23:06

I thought Charlotte even sounded a bit different, maybe the lip fillers made it that way.

Carrie finished Big off by dragging him under the shower.

ISpyCobraKai · 11/12/2021 23:12

She did sound different, I assumed it was her lips.

RandomDent · 11/12/2021 23:27

Ok I’ve watched the second episode now. It was funny! Much much better than the first.

Gennz18 · 12/12/2021 00:47

This thread prompted me to watch. I loooooooved the original series 20 years - but have rewatched it since and it’s cringily unbearable, especially Carrie. Makes me realise how we have progressed since then. I’m definitely not woke but some of the views in the original really clang, and Carrie prioritises her shit relationships over everything. Her entitlement when she realises her friends have been making sensible financial decisions when she has been spaffing it all on shoes is quite gobsmacking.

I think there was always an undercurrent of sexism and this series reinforces that. Especially re Miranda. There is no way she would’ve ended up that bumbling. The writers will be, I bet, in their 20s. The 90s will be the Dark Ages to them and women over 50 might as well be 90. Explains the dismissive tone deaf way characters like Miranda have been written.

Love that they killed off Big instead of another go round of their hideous relationship. Carrie’s funeral outfit was great.

Piglet89 · 12/12/2021 07:07

Kim Cattrall was always gonna steer clear of it because, quite simply, she worked hard to have a more varied acting career than the rest of them and I also think she’s more talented. I’ve seen SJP in other stuff before SATC (Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler, anyone?) and reading her Wiki realise she’s actually been on the stage since childhood. But I haven’t seen the others in anything except SATC.

Carte all had the smarts to realise she didn’t want to be typecast as Samantha (a very strong, recognisable character; it would have been easy for producers and casting agents never to have been able to see her as anything else when casting her for other work). Cattrall is to
SATC as Victoria Beckham is to the Spice Girls.

Sounds like the answer to an 11+ question.

Piglet89 · 12/12/2021 07:10

Also, while we’re here, I hate how society views women over 50 and sounds like the recent raft of writers for this show have walked right into the trap of treating Miranda, an intelligent, successful, professional woman, as an idiot. It is such a fucking cliche!

SnailandtheWail · 12/12/2021 07:11

I was cringing for Miranda, it was bloody awful.

aquashiv · 12/12/2021 07:13

Ofcourse we age. Why is that depressing. A hundred years ago we would be dead by now.
It's never going to be risqué anymore. Sex is everywhere it doesn't need ramming down your throat.
Think they all looked fabulous not knackered fat and menopausal like myself and friends.
We need more programmes about real 50 year olds women. I like that they have fallen out with Samantha and she's got the hump that's what happens.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 12/12/2021 08:33

Carrie was a heavy smoker in the early series which is probably why she hasn't aged as well as she would have (I assume SJP also smoked?).

It was bad, but I'll definitely keep watching. Just probably while I'm doing something else at the same time. Watched the second episode while wrapping presents.

SnailandtheWail · 12/12/2021 09:03

I got the impression that the bit where Carrie and Miranda were lamenting that Samantha hadn’t peen picking up messages or returning any texts or calls really meant ‘production tried to call her loads to hassle her into being involved in this but she ignored everything and we just don’t get why’

Butchyrestingface · 12/12/2021 09:21

The dig at Kim Cattrall was pretty uncalled for IMHO.

I don’t watch it. What was said?

SnailandtheWail · 12/12/2021 09:24

@Butchyrestingface

They saw Bitzy Von Something and told her Samantha wasn’t dead from covid but in London. But yeah said something about sixty something women still being viable there.

SnailandtheWail · 12/12/2021 09:24

*Bitzy said

Samantha fell out with them after she was let go as Carrie's publicist. She then went to London. As well as lengthy conversations about how much they all tried to contact her and she ignored them all and must have seen Carrie all the time as nothing more than an ATM, someone said "Sexy 60somethings are still viable over there."

If they couldn't get Cattrall on board, they should have just not done it. It was clear after the second film that it had run out of steam.

Oh yeah, that’s nasty. But I think that was pretty much Kim Cattrall’s position all along so they’re just proving her right.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 12/12/2021 09:36

I have huge respect for Kim C for not taking part in this series.
She has actually said some very interesting things about her life and career, and she seems by far the least vacuous of the original cast - which explains why she isn’t doing this one.

Agreed. And the petty dig at her through the explanation of Samantha's missing character just proves everything she has said about SATC and SJP right.
GreenClock · 12/12/2021 10:12

Kim Cattrall was very good in My Boy Jack with Daniel Radcliffe. It was based on true events.

Whataday21 · 12/12/2021 10:15

I saw the catty (geddit?) comments, but thought that the flowers were such a beautiful touch and really paid tribute to her. It was a message of love and friends. The second episode was so well done and very emotional.

RandomDent · 12/12/2021 10:30

It was as if the first two episodes were written by two completely different teams. The first one had lots of boring but necessary scene setting but some excruciating dialogue. The second one had lots of cutting, inappropriate humour, which is mainly what I remember in the original series.

DottyHarmer · 12/12/2021 10:43

Anyone seen The Ice Princess? KT is in that and very good playing a completely un-Samantha person. Dd and I love that film!

Just watched both episodes. I thought Charlotte looked great - so did Miranda. Carrie - the hair ! I’m not saying she should get a frumpy bob, but the scraped-back look was very…. EastEnders.

I felt it was a bit depressing that women in their 50s were portrayed as not just out of touch but that the young were hostile to them. It left me feeling a bit panicky and thinking that no wonder women have adopted shampoo and sets, beige and going to garden centres as they are at least safe spaces (and “safe looks”) where no one is goi g to judge you as an irrelevant being who should “move aside” (in the words of some enlightened (woke) young women on a BBC podcast).

DrSbaitso · 12/12/2021 11:03

Cattrall has always been a brilliant actress. Variation and depth. Terrific in comedy and drama.

It was very low to weaponise the script against her like that. Disrespectful both to her and also to the audience, who tuned in for entertaining fiction.

FlowerFlour · 12/12/2021 13:25

Has anybody seen the trailer for the next episode?

Horrible. Did they change all their writers after the show? Apart from the Woke Convertor that they ran the scripts through (great description thebellagio !) The plot lines are so predictable. Miranda is going to become an alcoholic then have a fling with Che, it's obvious. Carrie is going to do the podcast with a wry chuckle even though they're rude AF to her. Why is she even doing a podcast? Big was very wealthy; she doesn't have to demean herself.

In the OG show you couldn't predict what would happen next, this one is boringly predictable.

I agree. They could have written Samantha out with class and grace. Instead they make petty digs at her through the script.

Though this does prove that Kim Cattrall was 100% right about the bitchiness and backstabbing on set. She is clearly a professional and the rest of them are the producer's minions helping to bully her via snide digs. She's is completely vindicated.
