To ask if you drink in pints or halves?

If you drink beer / cider / lager etc, do you drink in pints or by the half pint?

I know that historically 'ladies' were frowned upon for drinking a pint.

Now times are moving on is it more acceptable to drink a pint, do you and what are your views generally?

Mine is that if I want a pint I will have one. Saves going to the bar twice. But at the same time I don't want to be judged by others for it.

I've always liked a half. I am a total lightweight and can't keep up with pints. All my mates used to think my tiny glasses were hilarious! Pretty much all the girls I knew who drank beer or cider would have a pint when I was young (90s).

VienneseWhirligig · 25/11/2021 21:25

Pints, as does my sister. My mother drinks halves and rolls her eyes at us, she thinks we are trying to annoy her (we aren't). I do have incredibly small hands though (child size almost) so I have to be careful, I can't hold the pint glass as easily as my sister!

VienneseWhirligig · 25/11/2021 21:27

As to what I drink, I like Beerblefish Cashmere IPA, Corona or Rattler.

WildRosie · 25/11/2021 21:29

The Old Peculier was ok - I've had better but I can't complain for two quid a pint. Now it's down the road and Settle Sloe Porter. First time I've had it - won't be the last!

ParkheadParadise · 25/11/2021 21:33

Usually, drink a bottle lager/cider.
In a pub, I always order a double Brandy/Vodka because pub measures are crap.

Needsleep32 · 25/11/2021 21:34

Bottled beer, but in the summer pints of cider with ice.

JustLyra · 25/11/2021 21:40

Pints usually.

My MIL and her best friend order pints at the bingo because it's 30p cheaper than two halves. They ask for a half pint glass with their first pint, then carefully pour half of it in because "ladies don't drink pints". It always makes me chuckle.

MiladyBerserko · 25/11/2021 21:40

What century are you in OP?

JustLyra · 25/11/2021 21:41

That said the club they go to bingo in is so old fashioned traditional that since they've both been widowed and don't have husbands to go to the bar anymore the bar chap comes to them as women don't go to the bar there.

IWanderedLonely · 25/11/2021 21:42

I remember being shocked at a works Christmas party when a colleague's wife was drinking pints. This was 1985.
I don't think I've given it a second thought since.

Glinsk · 25/11/2021 21:43

In which century do you think we are? I was 18 in 1976 and have always drunk pints.

gospelsinger · 25/11/2021 22:06

I used to drink pints but I'll mostly go for half nowadays. Middle age has that effect. I can always get another if I want. I've always had lots of comments as a woman who drinks pints. Not negative - just surprise.

SarahBellam · 25/11/2021 22:32

I was enjoying a pint with friends in a bar in the early ‘90 when a man sidled up to me and said, “I’d never let a women of mine drink pints”, and I replied, “So what?” I stand by that today.

I'd have been very interested to know how that nincompoop would propose to stop his woman drinking a pint.
IncyWincyGrownUp · 25/11/2021 23:41

If I’m out for a drink, I drink bottled cider if I’m not drinking spirits, so whatever glass is supplied when I buy it. If I’m buying lime and soda, or other fizzy stuff (most likely, I don’t drink alcohol very often) I usually get a pint. I couldn’t give a toss what glass I get to be honest, as long as I’m not thirsty it’s all good.

Bosky · 26/11/2021 03:49

Whichever I want, usually a pint for the first drink, which will normally last me an hour.

The last time I can remember anyone commenting disparagingly on my asking for a pint: it was a middle-aged man in London in the 1970's. I was shocked.

The last time I can remember anyone commenting that they preferred to drink a half when I asked for a pint: it was a middle-aged woman in Newcastle upon Tyne this year. I was shocked.

WeasilyPleased · 26/11/2021 05:47

Pints. Now craving a lovely cold pint of John Smiths but as I'm pregnant I'll dream on.

Sprostongreen21 · 26/11/2021 05:59

I love beer/lager but it bloats me. I have the odd half occasionally a point if just one.

But I was drinking pints in the late 90s no one cared. So I can’t see why they would care thirty years later? My fella drinks cocktails from fancy dainty classes with me. He doesn’t get comments either.

Ludoole · 26/11/2021 06:06

Always drink pints. 2 halves in our local cost more than 1 full pint.

MrsJackWhicher · 26/11/2021 06:25

Same here!

BeyondShrinks · 26/11/2021 11:00

My BIL drinks red wine. It is almost guaranteed that when drinks are served, my sister is given the red wine, and my BIL the pint of lager.

starfishmummy · 26/11/2021 11:11

Whichever I feel like at the time!

FluffyBooBoo · 26/11/2021 11:21

@starfishmummy

Whichever I feel like at the time!
Which is, imo, the right answer.

It's ridiculous that people are being judged for both drinking pints and for drinking half pints. Seems neither is right, so just drink whichever you want and sod anyone that wants to judge you based on that.

rainbowdashsneeze · 26/11/2021 11:47

Most certainly pints a half would be gone in 2 swigs and I would constantly be stood at the bar 🤣

bippityboppity87 · 26/11/2021 12:46

I drink pints if I go to the pub (very rare these days) mainly because it's cheaper and lasts longer. I like gin as well, but really only drink it in the house as it's too expensive otherwise. Not a fan of wine. That's my reasons for it and I know plenty of others who have the same mindset. So no, I don't think anyone would judge
